It just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that
I'm important enough for people to constantly complain
about.

who gives a fuck on how a country chooses to post its
durations of time?

honestly.

I really love how anything our media chooses to do is
directly reflected back on our people 100% as if the entire
country thinks Marilyn Manson was some evil demon that crept
up those kids asses and caused them to shoot up a school. If
you hold that viewpoint you are a fucking rediculous member
of a sack of shit race that needs to be bludgeoned with big
friggin rocks.

Actually meet a few (non-tourist) Americans before you talk
bad about them. How many of you Anti-American twats can
honestly say you've really taken the time to study your
foe? Very few of you I bet have actually sat down at a
dinner table with a family of Americans to see what they
truly think of the world or really have any idea as to what
our mass majority thinks on the war in Iraq, Terrorism, Bush
etc etc.

take your heads out of your asses everyone.

PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE. I could put the UK under the microscope
and dig up PLEANTY of dirt on you guys, enough to talk three
times as bad about your people. that goes for any country.

you must agree, though, that as with english people driving
on the wrong side of the road, it creates unnecessary
confusion... for instance how the fuck would I know of 05/03
is the fifth of march or the third of may since not all
people use the same standard?

I dont think there is a "Wrong side of the road"
was a stupid way of going about things. Futurists could see
the rate of population growth coupled with the lifespan of
any particular vehicle, the consumption of fossil fuels and
any fuels for that matter, all this green house shit,....

I'm trailing off of that approach now. think about this:
1 car for every person on earth. major waste of material.
we need to create a better means of mass transit that is the
Key!

oh wait we were american bashing.

I respect you Drunken Mastah, out of all the posts Ive read
that youve written theyve almost all been well thought out
and no bullshit going with em.

I dont give a fuck about the way anybody does the date.
I understand your plea. but realize there will be no
unification for a long-long time.

I think we should be unified in the way we do things.
THATS A GOOD IDEA. I wish sometimes that we were more like
ants. We all know it is not going to happen.

fuck the rest of this I'm going to bed.

I love the way that as soon as people criticise any facet of
American politics, grammar, or way of life (no matter how
small) and the yanks suddenly go on the defensive as if we
had just punched their mother.

You're jealous!
Why you be hatin?
Your country sucks!
&etc. &etc.

Don't people realise that getting your knickers in a twist
like this just makes you look insecure and (ironically)
plays up to the stereotype many people hold of Americans?

Criticise French engineering, British weather or German
cooking and Europeans don't turn into a frenzied pack of
lunatics baying for blood because "some damned yankie piece
of shit" has criticised "the best country in the world."

We aren't really upset by the illogical things
Americans do. More faintly amused and bewildered. I think
the Razorlight song "America" sums it up pretty well. We're
don't hate it, we're just not really that interested in
America.

It was more of the assumption that we are all god fearing,
bush loving, evolution disbelieving, environment destroying
red neck comments that get on our nerves. The wrangling
everyone into one group thing is annoying. And you did it
again "the best country in the world." That again is a
stereotype of the red neck guy. Oh, the British have bad
teeth, stuck up attitude and horrible food. Thats the
stereotype and I bet they don't like it either. The French
are horribly rude and smoke a lot of ciggs and the Germans
hate Jews, wear black and act like robots. Those are the
real stereotypes . I bet those would get on someones nerves.

That's my point, you can say those things and generally
speaking, the people from those countries don't immediately
go apeshit and start to inventory everything that is great
about their country and slating your own. Criticise America
in any way and you soon have a gang of Americans (yourself
included, it would seem, based on the above) who, quite
aside from failing to address the criticism that has been
made, just fly of into a "What right do you have to bash
America?!" rant.

As I said here, of course not all Americans are
like this. But reacting in this way only reinforces that
perception (that you're all overly patriotic lunatics)- why
else would you get so upset by it? I intentionally said,
"the best country in the world." Because that's the
impression that often comes across when people leap to
America's defence. It's like trying to criticise the
behaviour of someone who cannot be dispassionate at all and
debate rationally, but instead takes it terribly personally
and just want to turn it into a slagging match.

As an aside, I've yet to see anyone successfully argue
against the inital points in this thread.

there are a few threads where people are complaining about
something their country has done. Americans don't seem to do
this as often, so everyone else complains about their
country for them.

from an early age my mom would preach about how I was so
lucky to be living in a "free country." The only problem
was that she argued the US was the only free country.

If this experience is anything like most other americans'
experiences, then that might account for the "we're the
best, wooo" attitude--I don't really know how it originated
though...

lucky for me, I thought everything my mom said was bullshit,
except about santa claus. In conclusion, my mom is a weird
lady with some really progressive ideas, but also some very
questionable ones.

Yes, sure. The Middle Eastern countries, the EU as a whole,
Australia, Africa, UK, Russia, Spain, etc. are never
criticised. It's only America. Everyone hates America and
never discusses other countries' failings at all. It's
understandable why Americans are so upset by these sort of
threads.

on that note, are there really as many american flags all
around as it looks like? here in norway, I'll see the
norwegian flag whenever there's some national holiday, but
people don't bother with it as much otherwise... when I see
stuff from america it looks like the flag is
everywhere! Like, there's a flag in every classroom,
there's a flag on every four cars and if something is doing
something, they have a tendency to plant a flag on it when
they're done.. like that "building the biggest" thing on
discovery where they were shipping a large steel part for a
bridge and some of the workers started planting flags all
over the fucking thing... it seems like a way to express
that very same "america's the best; the only free country!"
thing...

do you think the reason you have the impression that
americans generally get very defensive about stuff is
because you only really notice the people who are getting
defensive? on a messageboard especially, since you can't
really notice the people who don't care.

I guess its better to speak of these things in person.
People are generally more considerate when they aren't
behind a computer screen. I do think there is a much higher
frequency of anti American comments. Its the personal
attacks. Not the government criticisms that grate on you.

yeah, that pledge of allegiance thing is another sort of
weird.. (I'd like to call it mind control, but that just
isn't true plus it's silly) nationalism reinforcement
method... not necessarily intentionally instituted, but it
sure seems to be hindering freedom of opinion in that you're
more likely to get a uniform opinion with such an

from having a different opinion, you're just not as likely
to).

or another HBO "Classic television series"

it seems like they're using the same formula for all new

very similar) wrapping with pizzicato music when it's
supposed to be funny and weird at the same time.

I believe he is probably referring to JFK.

I should point out that I don't neccessarily agree with all
the points. What I was making a point of when I said,

"As an aside, I've yet to see anyone successfully argue
against the inital points in this thread. "

was that those who leapt to America's defence generally
didn't say, "Well, point one doesn't matter because..." and
"I personally am not convinced it was us who killed JFK,
etc."

Instead, it turned into (moreso in the other thread, but
also here) either defense of America, or disassociation of
individuals here from "Americans" as whole. Now,to my mind,
that's a distinction that shouldn't need to explicitly be
made. If someone says, "The UK's prolonged involvement in
Iraq is appaling." I don't treat that as a criticism of me
personally, I don't attack the country the person saying it
comes from, nor do I automatically try to defend it.

People seem to fail to grasp the concept of Zeitgeist (the
spirit of a country as a whole). When we say "France does
x" or "... is a problem in China" we are not criticising all
individuals on the board who come from that country.

awful awful awful songs like that.

hmm.. as we're criticising wrong usage of words.. as far as
I can remember, that isn't what zeitgeist is, but I never
bothered much with it because it seemed so silly that there
should be a rational progression in history (which is what I
learned it as meaning). Hegel was a bit of a silly man at
times.

I can imagine. Even when they were trying to get me to sing
"God save the Queen" when I was in Scouts, I thought it was
a bit odd. Bearing in mind that I'm a royalist who was
choosing to be there, I can see how for someone who didn't
hold those beliefs, somewhere where attendance was mandatory
(like school), it'd be very unpleasent.

You're quite right- Zeitgeist is "spirit of the world at a
given time". Although, it is generally used to focus on an
area of the world/movement, bigger than a country, but not
always the world (presumably because the world is seldom in
the same attitude/mood all over). For example, the western
fear of terrorism, as well as the occasional worldwide
cultural movement (eg the current fixation with
environmentalism, both in the West and East).

I think Volksgeister would have been more appropriate in
this instance. The correct word aside (not that I'm making
light of that- I must confess that was forgetfullness on my
part, it has been a while since I read a formal philosophy
book), do you believe that there is anything to be gained by
creating these general "spirits of a nation" for the
purposes of debate of the ways a country generally
behaves/feels, or is any sort of stereotype only a negative
thing?

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2006-10-30 11:46 [#01995179]
Points: 35867 Status: Lurker | Followup to Ceri JC: #01995168 | Show recordbag

well.. sure there's something to be gained; you need to
direct your critique at something, and I'd actually
say that "Americans" is borderline metaphor in that it no
longer means "citizen of the united states of america," but
rather refers to whichever part of its population you're
currently criticising; if you're criticising americans for
being pro-war, you're criticising those americans that are
pro-war, and no other citizens of america should feel struck
by the critique.

I also think there's something good in unsettling those
"other" americans, the ones you aren't attacking: Maybe, if
they feel that your critique is directed at them, but that
it misses (that they're not "Americans"), they'll eventually
get fed up and maybe want to change what an "American" is.
Then, maybe they'll become more active in changing those
policies of their country that they don't agree with. That
this should happen on a large scale, however, is probably
wishful thinking; most people have better things to do than
dabble in politics, and don't get me wrong, that's a good
thing (what would we do if we were all politicians?), but
more seriou activists (in other words, not emo kids
arguing over who can shout the loudest and who can be the
most hating, but rather constructive politicians who
accomplish something) are definitely needed.
