No, but it still is embarassing. I honestly think that Superman is one of the worst ideas in history of pop-culture. What is interesting in a guy for whom there are no limitations? He reminds me of a super-fast rocket-powered armoured car with lasers that a child would draw.
Anyway, I'm glad to see that you agree on something with tridenti

Britney Spears (pop culture wise) is far more embarassing.
More or less, pop culture is dum, but its what a majority of the culture likes, or is told to like, via tv, the internet, movies....whatever the media is

I don't think Routh really has the chutzpah that Reeve did... so much of the appeal of the first two Supermen was because Reeve was such a presence as Superman and such a great dork as Clark. The new Lois also doesn't have Margot Kidder's spunk, and her forehead is too huge.
Kevin Spacey is a a worthy Luthor, though. Considering how much emphasis gets put on villains in superhero movies, he should be a feather in the movie's cap.
I dunno. I'm excited, I love Superman. On paper, it sounds dumb to give one guy so much power, but in execution, it has always worked.

Minor spoilers ahead...
I just finished viewing a midnight showing of the movie.
Well, I liked it…IT, in my humble opinion, caught a bit—well, more than just a bit--a tremendous amount of the magic of the first two Superman movies. This is a good thing. But this movie isn’t in its soul a rehash of those pictures. It uses their style and pacing to some extent (sometimes unabashedly in excess), but breathes new life and vigor into those same themes and ideas. It has a life of its own. Although, the actor playing Superman does seemingly attempt to channel Christopher Reeves in mannerism and voice, but this, at least by me, is accepted very easily. The guy, I think, did a decent job.
I did, though, at times, feel a bit awkward towards Kevin Spacey’s Lex Luthor. The performance was, well, a bit, I don’t know, effete. But whatever. I did however enjoy with giggles, that Lex’s awesome criminal mind still leads him to his crackpot scheme of real-estate! I thought that was funny in a good non-lame way (I think it was intentional).
I also enjoyed the structure of the film, the pacing. It flowed nicely, without strain to get to the action parts and so on. It does not feel like a modern movie. It’s as almost, for the most part, that labor was put in to the movie making process, to create quality cinema like the “old days”. I can’t say it enough, I really think that Singer captured a bit of those early Superman movies. Exquisitely so. The man can direct. And will probably be able to direct what ever he wants after this, including the sequels.
There is one thing that I didn’t like that I'd like to point out: Making a character a Christ like figure in the movies. I didn’t mind all the savior talk, but do we really need to see another character take the Christ-on-the-cross posture while in defeat again, sort of like Neo did in the last Matrix and countless other characters do. It’s just tiring. But anyway, I did enjoy this movie. It makes up for a lackluster summer movie experience so far.
4/5
Goodnight!
