racism

racism has its dormant seed in america... it is so obvious
to me sometimes that it is nauseating. it makes me want to
vomit. one of the top reasons i want to get the fuck out of
this country, but i feel like i'd just encounter it
elsewhere.

in the area i live - you have to have certain qualifications
to be black and not considered a waste of life. even
succesful blacks are viewed as some kind of mutation, or
'strange'. if you are a smart negro you are a 'special', an
'exception'.

i'm not trying to contradict you, but i think the general
experience in our society is that if you are "successful" or
"smart", you are generally regarded as a special person...
regardless of race...

i agree with you, as a black person its exxagerated though.
even amongst blacks if youre smart and you do not talk with
a head full of slang and ebonics you are 'weird' or a
'square', as if an intelligent person is like contimated
water

wow.... I was just kidding about the south thing.... but
you're apparently from there ? I lived for a little while in
New Orleans, and what I experienced was almost the
opposite..... whites were the ones being discriminated
against by blacks.... and the whites more than less were
more accepting of differences in a person's race, creed, or
sexual orientation..... but that might just be because new
orleans is new orleans..... although the ghetto out there is
HORRENDOUS

you hit the nail on the head there. i think the root of
racism is the whole shadowy construct of "race" itself. but
this might be too large an issue for a messageboard.

as long as people choose to divide themselves this way,
whether for pride or good or bad, we'll experience the
consequences of the choices. more division, more
stereotypes, more racism.

I hope it gets better too. Racism springs out of fear of the
unknown, I would think. If people understood and
familiarized themselves with other cultures I think some of
the problems would go away. This sounds very flowery and
idealistic.. but on a personal level some of the reason I do
not feel as comfortable around people of other races is that
things are still somewhat informally segregated and I don't
understand the other cultures.. I even fear other cultures
sometimes. This doesn't mean I'm racist, I'm just
ill-equipped to deal with cultures I don't understand. I'm
from south Texas, so there's a large Hispanic population
here.. in fact it's the majority. As a result, I feel quite
comfortable around Hispanic people.

It's tough, if we stopped all these programs with special
treatment for minorities, which only continue to place
more emphasis on racial difference, then maybe the
divide would begin to fade. Or, would it just mean that
those in charge continue to discriminate and exercise their
own racism? It's a tough call but hopefully, if we can dull
the rhetoric of intolerance that still springs up in certain
areas enough, the problem will soften over a couple more
generations.

Yeah, you should go north, everyone there is so scared of
being perceived as racist that they give other races
preferential treatment (also exists with gays). I catch
myself doing it occasionally.

It could just be me, though...

I got sick of this discussion a long time ago. Nobody is
racist if you ask them, and I think most everyone honestly
believes that. But clearly its not quite adding up, so its
obviously something that people do by accident.

i think ignorance is slowly residing. i mean, 10 years ago,
a movie like Brokeback Mountain wouldn't be anywhere near a
cineplex let alone win any academy awards.

10 years from now, it'll be an award winning gay film about
a mexican astronaut and a black Nascar driver i rekkon.

well i live on the west coast of austraila and so i don't
know shit about the east coast, but you always see
aboriginals sleeping in parks and shit even though they get
free education and get handout money, then they go spend it
on beer and complain about the government when teenager
aboriginal kids in a near by town go throwing bricks at
people waiting to get on trains, some guy was seriously
injured a few weeks ago and it was all caught in the
security tape, a few months ago i was walking in the city
and these pack of abo kids came walking the oppisite way we
were, all dressed in fucking rags and cheap shit, and my
friend and i were just walking up the street and one of them
pretented to smash a bottle in my mates head, like strikeing
his head with a bottle but the abo who did it just pretented
then they kept walking and laughing and speaking in their
petrol slang.

those cunts need to be taught to conform to society and to
get an eduation and all that, not just go claiming land that
they say belonged to their ancestors 60000 years ago.
now i respect the native americans you have in north
america, i like their culture, like the apache and cherokke,
they seem kind and vibrant people, but i never see anything
on cnn or fox news about native americans attacking a
pedestrian waiting for a train.
i'm not saying that all australian aboriginals are bad, i
know aboriginals who have an education and are friendly
guys, but its just the ones you see in parks.

...

"Stolen Generation is the term commonly used to mean the
Australian Aboriginal children who were removed from their
families by Australian government agencies and church
missions between approximately 1900 and 1972. Originally
considered child welfare, the practice is today perceived by
many as a gross human rights violation, having wrought
extensive family and cultural damage."
