I'm playing around a bit with tags.

Choose a word to tag a page (topic). With time a "cloud"
will be created with different tags. The cloud might be used
as an alternative navigation to find topics you're
interested of.

Tags is one of the new features in XLTV2. However, this is
just to show you how it will work..... see it as "training".
:)

Questions in this thread, please....

Cool concept, but you should probably remove that "powered
by Wanabo". At least just put it on the bottom of the site
:p

"Site Index" is the cloud which is created by all the tags
from the visitors. You can use the cloud to find topics
related to the tag.

impakt: unfortunately i'm not allowed to remove "Powered

xltv2 will prolly use another similiar system anyway.

The tags ain't the same when you first come on the board and
when you come on the index via the index button

Ah yeah, you could probably write a function that generated
key-words/tags by itself from the initial/first post. Would
probably be even more accurate than human-made ones.

offline Phobiazero from the next Xltronic (Sweden) on 2006-02-14 15:49 [#01841404]

if you have never seen the concept "tags" before then i
fully understand the confusion it might bring... but give it
some time and don't critize it right away.... fyi, "tags"
will be more discrete in xltv2, but highly accessable for
the users who wants to use an alternative way to find
information.

the current integration shouldn't be taken too seriously.

then what would be the point compared to a regular search?

the point is to create a human association of the topic. if
you have a topic on "bola" .... then it might be useful to
tag the topic with words like "darrel", "fitton" or/and
"jello" althought those words are not located in the thread
and thereby wouldnt be found using a search engine.

it's the human association which could make a difference
here... as long as we keep the cloud healthy, the more
useful it will be.

offline Phobiazero from the next Xltronic (Sweden) on 2006-02-14 15:57 [#01841408]

as you can see the cloud is already cluttered with
irrelevant tags on this particular topic, which confuses
things, but that's quite natural in the beginning......

ehhh...

ok, let me see if I get this...

when in a topic that actually is about something, we
click "tag this page" and add a tag for what it is about or
what the topic contains. We will then, if everyone uses
these tags correctly, be able to find the topics and any
other topics that contain information about whatever the tag
is..?

so if I click a topic about mastering and tag it
"mastering," people will be able to click the tag for
mastering and find that topic +other topics that have been
tagged "mastering"..?

Yeah, I think you need do a thread explaining

WHAT ARE TAGS

HOW THEY WORK

HOW TO BE RESPONSIBLE USING TAGS

ETC

then, 8 weeks later, introduce tags.

Yeah, that's why I suggest computer-generated tags. A large
majority of the forum will probably just make "funny" tags
instead of using it seriously, at least in the starting
phase.

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2006-02-14 16:08 [#01841418]

funnily enough, the possibility of being funny using the
tags disappeared even before the tags were implemented. just
look at how predictably they are being used for "humour."

yes, so if people use them correctly, they will quite
possibly be a great tool! good work, but I don't think you
can rely on people using them correctly... you should only
give certain people access to them, I think... not only the
mods, though, as that would be too few for it to be
effective, but take people that.. you know.. don't fuck
about...

it IS possible to automatically generate tags based on page
content.

"the starting phase...." <--- true

maybe create a new field when creating a topic in which one
can enter a keyword for the topic that would automatically
be the first tag?

it IS a useful tool. the purpose is not to replace the mb
index page or the search engine. just an alternative way of
finding relevant information.

here's an idea -

how's about only the thread creator or mods can assign tags
to a thread, and nobody can assign tags to the index page?

offline Phobiazero from the next Xltronic (Sweden) on 2006-02-14 16:17 [#01841425]

another example: why not tag all radioshow-topics with a
"radioshow" or "liveshow" tags? it would simplify things a
lot.

This is a good idea.......... even if people abuse it
(before they get bored and go back to slagging off
tridenti), it still should work if at least some
people tag responsibly.
