CD arrived yesterday. Gave people a lift to a meeting this
morning. Played Microhelix loud on the way. Fucking great.
They looked ill. Nice album.

ooh. a new one? i didn't know there was one. i'll have to
grab that. i've been looking for a cheap copy of matrix for
a while - my favourite thus far.

I've always liked 0 degrees C and +/-

i love music you can play in your car and neighbouring cars
look at you like your car's broken or something. brilliant.

I have "Op." or whatever that one's called... I don't really
know what I think about it though.. it kind of flies by..
but isn't his other stuff more noisy?

never mind, I found samples, and it sounds awesome!
not noisy at all judging by them!

however, I think I heard something from him once that was
rather abrasive to the ear drums...

it's a cool album
not for a common listening of course, bust more musical than
other productions by him

who can explain to me more about this 'processed data'
thing?

where does this 'data' come from, and how does he structure
it into 'sound'?

samples sound really sweet. I gave matrix a listen once and
it was at the time a bit too hard to digest for me.

all his stuff I've listened to so far has been pretty
boring, but I'll give this a try

ooh, ive been looking for glitched out stuff but never knew
where to look. i havent heard much before but this does
sound pretty damn sweet.
cyclo is also sounding heaps fun to me : D

ugh, yuck!

i hate stuff like this.

sorry, but i guess that's why we're all different, with
different tastes and opinions.

it's not bad in its own right but...just not my preference
:)

hehe yeah I agree, to each his own. I listend to the samples
a week ago and I already forgot how it sounds. so forgetable
and bland. I'm gonna give it another try though. but I never
got glitch.
matrix just made me laugh. *bleeeeeep*...*blop*...*plip*

I bought '94 diskont' by Oval though, and i quite enjoy
that.

Warrants a spin every once in a while, but that's a
different style i guess :)

offline pigster from melbs on 2005-12-14 06:52 [#01800233]

hehehe, listening to cyclo. i really like the glitch, but by
the end of it, my head is just dying for some nice synths
and melodies.

well i don't define it glitch, it's minimal sound
architecture for me...more transcendental meaning....beyond
the glitch
raster noton put out lot of works, but i can enjoy only
few....among all the releases or it could be repetitive

so you could try to listen at least:
ryuichi sakamoto + alva noto - insen
ikeda - dataplex
alva noto - transall (3 cds)

i also listened to komet, he makes more enjoynable stuff

i still have to listen to other things....

"who can explain to me more about this 'processed data'
thing? where does this 'data' come from, and how does he
structure it into 'sound'?"

In modular sound programs for the computer you can process
automation data of with modules. A very simple example would
be a gate signal which only outputs a 1 or a 0. If you would
connect an envelope to the gate signal you can control how
fast the signal goes from 0 to 1 and how long it would take
to go back to 0 again. So here incoming data is processed
before automating a parameter of a soundmodule.
You can make it as complicated as you want.

I listened to microhelix and wondered where all the ear
piercing damage was. I listened then to syntax and got my
answer.

Sounds great

I have listened to this repeatedly for days. I have even
started to subconciously replace words with clicks and high
pitch tones.

Microhelix has some nice ethereal sounds, Syntax sounds very
alva notish. This may be the next big glitchy adventure.
Thanks.

It seems he played with fennesz and o'rourke. Anyone heard
any of those works?

You bring up two great things. This really reminded me of
alva noto. That came to mind almost immediately. Its quite a
departure when compared to +/- or something like 0degreesC

Still lovely and the high pitched sounds i was expecting was
in that sample. Phew! Same ol Ryoji!

I saw that thing with fennesz and o'rourke and for a
microsecond i thought about asking but then i figured i
would get no result. Surely this intregues me!

OH MAN!

I am going in order here.

I couldnt help myself.

The first 5 seconds of index i thought "cool same ol
Ryoji."

I got OWNED. i was wrong this is superior Ryoji!

I am on triplex now! This is great!

Vertex is beautiful.

Seriously.

He has outdone himself.

The first tracks leading into microhelix are a warm up and
when it drops it changes the whole vibe up. It was a move i
called a "brain dump" for what it did to my head.

How could anyone be let down?

2005 release of the year. IMO

"the last track (data.adaplex) contains specific waveform
data that subtly reveals the tolerances involved in
processing digital signals. it will cause some cd players to
experience unpredictable playback errors; this will not
damage equipment in any way."

I don't understand how sound can do that to a cd player.
because it's...just sound, not data. but wait...sound is
data...
but still it's weird that sound can do that. someone
enlighten me on this subject matter.

well, there is data on a cd... the indexes for
example...

...
okay, i admit it, i don't know either. : )

by the way, the last track of "+/-" (another Ikeda album)
makes my portable cd player bug in some way so it plays a
strange "melody" instead of the very high frequency it's
supposed to play (and does play on my computer)... not a
great meldoy by any means, it's an error, but it's kind of
interesting.

*melody

...
and it does that on a sachiko m track too.
i think some high frequencies makes it go crazy.

a nice experience indeed!
and something new to me...
i like the way how the traffic noise doesnt interferes in

what are you talking bout?)
