Pop music in "not that bad" shocker

I was listening to a few of my sister's poppy mp3s that she
downloaded. Im actually quite impressed by some of it. Sure
some songs can be plain annoying, a lot of it can be quite
good, simple music. It might become tired and boring after a
short while, but i cant see why everyone seems to have a go
at it at every singel chance they get. If people actually
listened to it, then perhaps they would be so judgemental.

Rant over.

Nothing can beat pop music when its good.

Well, maybe some music. Like Squarepusher on the 'mental'
bits.

are so funky!

I don't pay attention to pop music. I don't watch music
videos, listen to the radio, or anything like that, so I
don't know anything about the pop scene right now. I've cut
myself off from that world!

There's a lot to be learned from pop music, even if it's
just teaching you what not to do.
But any good song can be played in any style, for instance i
do an acoustic country style "come to daddy" (only at
barbeques of course) so you could easily take a nice pop
song and mangle the hell out of it and do it in a really
good way...

Erasure was the last pop band i could stand.

What is a Pop song? Is it a song that follows the usual
verse-chorus-verse format with the usual chords in the usual
chord progressions? Or is it any popular song? Nine Inch
Nails used to get played on the radio all the time so would
they be in the same pop catagory as "nsync?

offline sgt growley from Deal (United Kingdom) on 2002-02-27 23:05 [#00105253]
Points: 247 Status: Lurker

Well pop used to be short for popular, but these days it
tends to mean simple catchy polished sounding music, often
cheerful or sentimental, and usually a bit shallow.
But there's no reason why any band couldn't make a pop song,
even if they're not really a pop band.

... the kind of thing you could whistle after hearing once.
But i find something very strange about parents liking the
same music as their kids, i just doesn't seem right
somehow!...

See that's what I thought 'pop' music was now and that's
whey I have a really big problem with classifing music.
Most people who hear aphex - girl/boy song or squarepusher -
my sound will have those songs stuck in their head. They
jsut arn't popular enough for a large volume of people to
hear them. Ministry's - N.W.O. was huge for a while;
getting regular play on TV and radio. However it is
anything but pollished and cheerful. So it seems as though
'pop music' means popular sometimes and accessible other
times. That does not make sense.

Don't mind me I'm just talkin' shit about a pretty sunset.

Hey, "Jesus built my hotrod", now that's a fantastic
(almost) pop song, by a band you wouldn't expect it from.
I love ministry.

...and why is Jamiroquai being listed in a pop thread. They
are swanky ass groove funk. Sure they are popular but how
many other bands are doin' what they do.

offline B3n from Manchester (United Kingdom) on 2002-02-27 23:31 [#00105335]

I don't really mind pop. I don't hate much music, if I
dislike a song or band then I just ignore them and go about
my life.

If people like them and get something out of them, then
thats great. I don't really like Backstreet Boys and stuff
but if someone does like em I think thats great.

I don't really like saying I like a certain genre because if
I like a song then I like it, regardless of genre.

But two things that come to mind that I can't stand. That
freakin hamster dance song and Kid Rocks forever. But if
your someone who enjoys em, thats great!

woooo hooo.... Thank you Resident Evil. You're 100%
correct. Especially considering some people are saying they
don't like entire genres of music ie. "hip hop sux". Waht
the fuck is that.

Yeah, that's hillarious. The company is like "here just
take the money and leave us alone, please just go"

hahahaha... Mariah must feel so rejected but happy at the
same time (mmmm.... money for nothing).
