Message board rivalries are becoming something of a cliche. Pick almost any topic you like, and if you hunt around a bit, you will find two different messageboards dedicated to that topic, and dedicated to feuding with each other. The truth is, people at XLT like XLT because they are familiar with the people who hang out on XLT. Similarly, people at WATMM like WATMM because they know the crowd. Which community you actually end up in may be a matter of chance. Its a bit like two schools/colleges, on different sides of a road. You know that there are likely to be an equal number of nice and less-nice people in each school, but you'll always be more comfortable with the community that you know best. It seems at times that the webmasters of XLT and WATMM are the individuals who are the most concerned with the 'competition' between the sites. No matter - this drives both sites to keep going and improving, so we all benefit from this little rivalry. To be fair, the two of them can get along as well sometimes. So I know you XTL'ers are happy where you are, but for the WATMM refugees still lurking, I would like to point out that after a few weeks downtime, WATMM is back up today, with a new host, and new integrated board software. well, that went slightly better than expected. some people seem to share my views, but I knew the temptation for people to post witty forum-put-downs would be very strong. folks got pretty creative though, its kinda impressive. meanwhile, watmm has been recycled again. we are apparently back on IPB now, at the . As to the analogy of XLT and WATMM being like two schools on opposite sides of a road, IdironBoomtrack offered a slightly different view of the situation, which has disappeared now due to the forum switching. It was something like: "If XLT and WATMM are like two schools, then the forums are like competing sports teams - there will be some jock-like bantering, but anyone who takes it further than that is a dick" Not exactly my view, but an interesting one. Finally thanks to nigel for showing that if XTL and WATMM are united, then you get an amusing rude word. |
