[warning] Don't Buy Sony CDs

offline chaosmachine from Ottawa (Canada) on 2005-11-02 09:50 [#01767775]

because they contain hidden malware..

basically, sony/bmg cds shipping since march 2005 will
install a rootkit that hides files, patches your windows
kernel, and generally fucks up your system..

if you try to delete this software, your cd-rom drive
will stop functioning..

washington post article
sysinternals article (the guys who found it)

shop..

If all this isn't a bullshit - thank you.

Don't be such a rude prick. he's posted a message, with
links to legitimate articles in both the washington post and
a 100% detailed one in sysinternals. it's obviously not "a
bullshit". there's no need for that carry-on.

I usually buy Verbatim CDs anyway, but I have some mates of
mine that buy them though. I think I'll have to tell them of
all this.

........

The subject is CDs. Not CD-Rs (recordables). These are CDs
released by Sony.

Get with it.

isnt this the thing that was on the beastie boys album?

if so its easily avoidable but still amazingly cuntish

does the idea of a blank, recordable cd
containing software strike anyone as being......

jesus christ, i'm not going on another anti-tridenti rant,
but really, how does someone actually think these
things logically possible?

I hate Copy Controlled CD, they don't stop me putting stuff
on iTunes, it just takes me longer. Copy Controll doesn't
work, I wish record companies would give me insentive to buy
CDs (Good packaging, art ect.) Instead of me thinking twice
about an album because of Copy Control.

i ahte how alot of braindance type music has awful and non
existent inlays. aphex is a good example of not much to read
in his inlays mr snares aswell, i like a good thick inlay
book that takes 30 minutes to work out how the hell it folds
together, with backtracking through the unfolding process to
work out which way each bend goes. Its like a rubix cube but
prettier.

also the music industry is just paranoid, remeber all the
taping is killing music adverts about people taping off the
radio
ITS SILLY

they will never beat us pirates - *dons eye patch and
sails into the distance singing sea shanties and chanting
"more cowbell"

ha! you'd think sony would have thought of this before
now.what an utter shower of shites i have to say, and copy
protection never works.as soon as a new algorithm is
released it's cracked the next day by some kids that are
still in highschool

Hah!... incidentally I just found this article.
Sony rootkit usefull????

Aparently, the hidden sony files can be used to bypass the
copy protection in world of warcraft. I read to far into it,
so I don't know the details, but if its true, thats some
funny shit.

that's so fucked... if i ever buy a copy-protected cd by
mistake (i was already boycotting them) i don't even know if
i'll keep/try it now. the music industry is really going to
hell.

Due to the bad press that this is going to net them, sony
could be in some serious trouble. As soon as anybody finds
out that sony is putting the legal equivalent of viruses on
peoples computers, nobody is going to want to buy sony cd's.
Especially the kind of people that don't really know much
about viruses except that they are bad are a good portion of
their market audience.

Even if they loose, they could still appeal the judgement
untill they get a judge who is compassionate towards their
means, and use that judgement as a precident towards
legalizing other melicious means of copy protection.
