Translated through Babelfish!

You don't get everything through coherently, but the essence
is pretty much there.

his word not viberts and that the reason hangable auto bulb

Yeah, the questions were sort of boring. I was hoping for
more juice. Didn't really look like a fanboy interview,
though. Just a horribly "standard" one.

hahha! this google translation plugin at least translates
"petan" as "they petan."

no translation for crujiente.

i'm really enjoying the babelfish translation

"electronics of dormitory"

"At the beginning of the last decade their discs begin to
cause to stupor in the electronic community and rave."

"He very little leaves to puncture, he touches still less in
direct, he extends himself very little in interviews and
their discs do not leave with the same frequency before"

the sound is crunchier than in other releases and for this
they are more "smashing" when played live

VERY FREE TRANSLATION BUT YOU GET THE IDEA

offline imdex from Argentina on 2005-10-21 06:22 [#01756231]

crujiente: mmm, is like the sound of when you put
potatos in boiling oil, or when you eat cereal (that sound)
is like a metaphor on the loudness of vinyls and the cables,
that is the shity interpretation.

petan: "petan more" is like "rocks more" or "is
better than..."

As a non-native spanish language ... student, here's my
attempt at translation. Probably a few turns of phrase not
correctly translated.

Aphex Twin: The man of a thousand faces.

If there's one essential person of modern electronic music,
it's Richard D James. And if there's a complicated person,
we think of this guy from Cornwall as well who, with a solid
trajectory and a great discography, has made history in
fields as diverse as ambient, intelligent techno, acid
house, drum n bass and bedroom electronica. Everyone
considers him a genius, and he is. Shielded by this
untouchable status, Richard D James is allowed to do get
away with anything. He doesn't go out very often to DJ, very
rarely plays live, gives little away in interviews and he
doesn't release as many records as before, and in view of
this, that he has deigned to answer a few improvised
questions with us about his imminent visit to M2 to play
live his tracks from Analord is, for us, a great honour.
Aphex Twin speaks about Floridal35 and its indoor autumn
festival and, although he doesn't speak a great deal, he is
very friendly.

About Aphex Twin one could write a great deal, so we offer
the short version of his story. At the begining of the last
decade his records started to cause amazement in the rave
and electronic music community. Titles like "Digeridoo", his
ambient CDs for lablels like R&S and Warp, 12"s like "Quoth"
(Polygon Window) or the first "Analogie Bubblebaths" (AFX)
revealed an innate ability for electronic music abundant in
ideas and talent. Between techno, ambient and the freakiest
sounds possible, his music reached a pinnaclke that still
nobody has been able to equal. Many years later and with a
handful of master works behind him - among them the
compilation "Classics", the 12" "Windowlicker", the album
"Selected Ambient Works II" and the singles "Joyrex"
released under the "Caustic Window" alias - his latest
movement has been a series of eleven 12"s called "Analord"
en which, generally speaking,

he works at revisiting the analogue sound of his early days
to combat the saturation of digital sounds of current
electronic music and, furthermore, with a more dance
friendly rhythm, connected to Acid House, Electro and
Techno. This is what he'll be presenting at M2, and for this
reason we sent him these questions. Miraculously, he answerd
in two hours. A curious and unpredictable guy, a genius.

"What was your motivation on starting the Analord series? In
those records there's a series of elements that we weren't
used to hearing in your last few records as Aphex Twin, from
Acid House to more rigid rhythms and breakbeats that aren't
over complicated. Did you have a concrete aesthetic for
these singles?"

- No, I didn't plan anything before starting to make them.
But what is true is that the tracks I chose to include in
the Analords were those in which I hadn't used a sequencer
that had a monitor or screen.

"What do you think of the astronomical prices that people
are paying for the limited edition binder with Analord 10?
On eBay there are people paying more than $300 for it..."

- It flatters me greatly.

"There are cheeky people there that say your intention of
publishing a record included in a binder was to have the
most expensive item in the history of the second-hand
market..."

- No, not at all. At Rephlex we made less money with that
binder than we do normally with a normal record. Plus it's
not released on CD, and today nearly no one buys vinyl.

Which reminds us, you've never had a series of so many
records published under just one alias, be it Aphex Twin or
AFX. There's five "Analogie Bubblebaths", two "Hangable
Autobulbs". But the "Analord"s there are eleven. Why so many
records in one go?

- I was starting to listen to too much digital music around
me, and that was starting to damage my ears. I wanted to
return to re-adjust the balance a little.

"By the way, at the end of this month Warp plans to relaunch
a CD of the two "Hangable Autobulb" singles? Why now,
exactly?"

- Because they've never been available on CD.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-10-21 07:23 [#01756299]
Points: 15098 Status: Addict | Show recordbag

"When you released "Drukqs", one noticed you were quit
worried about the fact your music was available on the
Internet and was shared illegally by millions of people.
What's your opinion now about MP3s? Does it still bother
you?"

- I've always thought the music should be free and shouldn't
have copyright at all, especially art. Grant, my partner at
Rephlex, thinks in a completely different manner. But what I
think is that if you want to give money to an artist, great,
I am sure they'd be happier, but if you don't want to give
them money and to listen to their music free, as well that's
fine, because the fact that you listen to their music
already makes them happy. The copyright is more about making
money for businesses than protecting the artist. En any
case, the artists make better music when they're poor...

"Now it seems that there will return a grand explosion of
Acid House and there are lots of records coming out. Is
there an explanation for this?

- Do you really think Acid House ever went away? No, it
never left.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-10-21 07:24 [#01756300]

"Much is said over your relationship with the Warp label,
and many rumours have been circulating: that you weren't
happy with them, that you're next album would be your
last... but you're still here. What can you clear up about
all this?"

- They're all false rumours, there's never been a problem
between me and Warp. Nearly everything I've read on the
Internet about me, the same as about other people who I know
personally, is completely wrong. It's great when nobody can
know you well because they don't ask. By the way, hello
everybody.

"After so many years innovating electronic music, it seems
that people keep hoping you'll suprise them, which for you
could be an unneccessary pressure that could affect the end
result of your music. What do you do to isolate yourself
from the comments?"

- When you do something new and fresh, it gets old really
quick, because always the same thing happens: people are
going to copy you, and that stops me many times from making
"innovative" music in that sense. So I try to limit the
amount of material that I publish and what I do is
accumulate a lot of material just for me.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-10-21 07:24 [#01756301]
Points: 15098 Status: Addict | Show recordbag

"When you compiled the material for "Analord" did you have
in mind the DJs? They don't play your music often as it has
many time changes and complex breakbeats, but the Analords
are easy to play, say volume 3."

- Yes, they're much better to mix because it's material a
bit more repetitive and not so complicated. Plus, the sound
is more full than most digital compositions, and for that
they're more pleasing.

" 'Analord' comes from analogue, and also is the title of a
Luke Vibert track. In principal, the Analord series is made
completely from analogue equipment. Do you have a problem
with the sequencers and software?"

- Well, "Analord" is my word that I once told Luke. We're
good friends and many times we use the same words and we
both use a load of the same expressions. But the thing about
the analogue isn't true: I use sequencers all the time,
variety is the spice of lfe, my good friend.

"To finish with, do you think you'll shave one day?"

- I don't believe so.
