New spanish RDJ interview

"I've always thought the music should be free and shouldn't

have copyright at all, especially art. Grant, my partner at

Rephlex, thinks in a completely different manner. But what I

think is that if you want to give money to an artist, great,

I am sure they'd be happier, but if you don't want to give
them money and to listen to their music free, as well that's

fine, because the fact that you listen to their music
already makes them happy. The copyright is more about making
money for businesses than protecting the artist. En any
case, the artists make better music when they're poor... "

Interesting to see a different take on that. I pretty much
agree with everything here and especially about the poor
idea.

Interesting read. Thanks Dan for the translation!

I agree with the poor comment, my friend who has been
getting money for his music lately makes shit and has work
on a half decent track for years. The fucker is famous now
and just farting on Microphones ...

sequencers all the time, variety is the spice of lfe, my
good friend."

hahaha.

i agree with the guy on the whole copyright thing too...and
the part where he says he makes lots of music just makes me
want to find his home studio and lock myself inside for
months to listen.

he has said something like this in interviews before:

"When you do something new and fresh, it gets old really
quick, because always the same thing happens: people are
going to copy you, and that stops me many times from making
"innovative" music in that sense. So I try to limit the
amount of material that I publish and what I do is
accumulate a lot of material just for me."

what an odd argument.

surely the copying would be the problem of the people
copying him, not his. why would he care? why would that stop
anyone releasing the music they'd want to release?

i just hope one day we get to hear at least a part of that
'innovative' material. if that happens, he'll either come
out as the biggest jerk possible or a music mastermind.

i think everything he does release is innovative - look at
SAW 1 SAW2 HAB Drukqs and now Analord.. he's always
innovated more than anyone in his field. He is a music
mastermind already.

well vibert above all, but he did it before as well. not
quite the same but it's hardly innovative. which doesn't
mean it's a bad thing. still, i'd really like to see him do
something different next.

it is a bit selfish to withhold music b/c your parinoid
someone else might copy that style you've created. but
statements like that keep the fan boys drooling for more.
Do you really think when he released SAWII or analord he
thought, wow this is fucking innovative? no, chances are not
really. i'd like him to review hours of is music and just
put out something completely bizzare and strange...or maybe
write innovative music...whatever that really is anyway.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-10-22 09:39 [#01757579]

I don't doubt that people pinch RDJ's ideas, but, as an
artist, he has such technical ability and completely his
own, unique sound that comes across in whatever style he
adopts or creates, he's pretty difficult or, I'd say
impossible, to rip off. If there was a rumoured new album
coming I don't think you'd have this thing like with the
Untilted or Campfire "fakes", with people not knowing if it
was him or not, "Is it him? I don't know, OMG he's gone
cheesy drum and bass" ... I know there was confusion with
that "Analord 10 (live) that was leakaged, but, well, it
was Aphex if not actually Analord. What am I saying?
Well, obviously it's up to RDJ what he releases or not, it's
his music. It'd just be nice to hear it, I wouldn't worry
about people copying it. Show them who's the daddy, Rich,
again!

than inovative music (but shit ones). & btw you'd probably
hate afx shots on inovative music

yes it is good but the best ever ? they are all pretty much
the same, for many many years now, people ask him questions
about his music and he bull-shits and has his fun with them,
i find it quite hallariuos

his words and music cd, the parts with the talking are quite
good as well

richards not trying to make a new audience he knows he
already has a fallowing

Well I'm not some kind of fanboy who has read every
interview (or intends to), but this one I found to be quite
interesting and the bit about shaving was a nice way to end.
The questioning was fairly formulaic, but omitted some of
the usual stupid question, like what does A symbol mean, etc

nice interview, cheers for the translation.

His music has been innovative to a certain extend, it's
still based around basic tonality or 'semi-tonality' in the
melodies, with drums & stuff and basic song structures. An
academic electro acoustic mofo would probably say: simple
dancemusic composed on chance.

What I mean to say is when you compare his music to academic
art music he isn't innovative at all, compared to all the
top 40 crap he defenitely is.

Personally I don't give a fuck if he calculated his beats
with some special thought out algorithm, and can
theoretically justify every move he musically makes... if it
is good it is good.
