If one more person approaches me on a bus stop and asks if
I'm listening to television static, or comments about how
they "Cain't Bob dey hedz to dis shit".....

I'm going to impale them.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

Well, not necessarily idm-specific, but I was staying at a
friend's house and her stepdad commented on some live zappa
i was playing (echidna's arf) which is really be-boppy (fast
scattish melodies). he said it wasn't music. I was shocked
and thought he was joking and asked why, and he said, "If
you can't hum it, it's not music"

:/

all confused like "But wasnt it skipping? or scratched?! My

I dunno. I've had people say it was ''interesting music''...
they weren't negative about it. My little cousins' faces lit
up when they heard Confield, I made a topic about it here
years ago.

I remember in high school I was letting some jock use my
discman, which had Kid A in it at that moment. He called it
''suicide music, if it was music at all''. I laughed at him
and then he pretended to give me a Stone Cold Stunner.

exactly.. pop conditions people to be unable to connect with
instrumental music, since they're so used to there being
little or no variation in the music and therefore just
listening to the lyrics.

i myself am pretty much the exact opposite, i find vocals
and lyrics quite distracting because the majority of the
time they're written by poet-wannabes whose lyrics can ruin
an otherwise perfect song.

joni mitchell and neil young are certainly exceptions to
this, especially joni.

her lyrics are just 100% beauty.

i'm fast reaching my 10-post-a-day limit, so i'll exit this
thread gracefully while i still can..

do you ever wonder this?
k. parents buy that baby music to help them sleep, its
simple and boring. if you ever had a kid, wouldnt you play
it complex autechre-like stuff? I mean, that would probly
allow the infant to develop millions more neural pathways in
their brain as opposed to babies that get into that kiddy
rhythem crap.

think about it.

You should not even bother. Most people think of music as of
an empty space filler, that should be "safe" and flatter
their shallow and undeveloped tastes.

idea, but I tend to keep the music I listen to a secret from
everybody.

Here's my theory for what its worth..

I just made a song which I found to be one of my best, both
melody wise and beat wise, and I showed it enthusiastically
to a friend of mine.
He called it "boring crap."

I was astounded, truly.

But then again, I got a recommendation rom another friend,
he told me to download Isolee's Wearemonster album.
I listened to it and found it incredibly boring and
simplistic.
He said it is one of the most complex albums ever conceived,
that its about 40 times more complex than afx's
programming.

You know, I just gave up on trying to figure out how people
listen to music, because I've met so many different people
who listens to so much different music.

Me myself I just listen to whatever sounds good to me,
without any prejudice regardless of genre.

But I'll say this, some people are very closes minded about
music, they seem unable to enjoy anything that doesn't fit
their view of what good music is.
THey seem unable to open their minds to other types of
rhythms, melodies and arrangments and concepts.

Which is sad for them.
Not only that, but they call me elitist whenever I try to
make them to listen to say confield. They say I like it just
to seem intelligent or different.
I'm so tired of peoples ignorance in general.

I keep music I listen to secret from everyone too... of
course I'm a complete recluse so that goes for everything
else as well. A lot of music is very social in nature, maybe
even as its primary purpose. I think "idm" can be some of
the least social. The mentality of groups can be very
different than a single brain. For example the thought that
steven siegal movies are good is quite popular among people
as a whole. But this same group of people (as a whole) will
never make LP5 popular amongst them. bla oti jaeoi f Well
look, I've been playing videogames and watching movies all
day like usual so I unfortunately have NOTHING else to do
than write this awful nonsense here so please bear with me.

I can say with 100 percent certainty that I personally
honestly greatly prefer weird complex sounds (eg. 8000 bc by
otto von schirach) to slower paced more rhythmic and simple
music. This is entirely subjective and has nothing to do at
all whatsoever with anything social such as trying to appear
different or something.

aye - for me its not just a preference for a certain type of
music, but just a love for music. and the more ideas i see
in the music, the more i like it.

Do you deep down see making or listening to music a complete
waste of time though? I do, especially after having read
about memetics. Can't it be argued that any other activity
such as reproducing or writing are equally pointless? But
what does organizing sound accomplish? Listening to a
song is a drug, an escape to an altered state of
consciousness much like a movie. I lump this into the
"surrogate activity" the unabomber discussed in his
manifesto, ie. behavior we do in our current drastically
altered environment to replace behavior we would have done
naturally in our genetically evolved environment (which I
long for I'm pretty sure. I think I could give up videogames
and everything else for a normal natural life like it is
supposed to be than this insanity). It's kind of hard to do
anything worthwhile nowadays anyway... humans are an
overpopulated pollution. The most worthwile thing I can do I
am already doing which is sadly NOT doing something, ie not
breeding.

yes, some people tend to confuse "music" and music they
like. or "art" and art they like. and they think they're
objective. it's annoying.

"i like music! so if i don't like it, it's not music!
it's crap!"

gaaaah.

i really can't blame anyone for not liking the music i like,
it would be just as utterly stupid; but i wish people had an
open mind enough and wouldn't be so self-centered and like
"my taste = good; not my taste = crap evil satan suicide
drug bad".

The few times other have heard weird music I played, they
never reacted very strongly at all with one exception: the
2nd song on the rdj album. My dad heard it and was kind of
struck and said something like "that's just... weird"
And indeed it is a very exceptional shining example of
weirdness. God damn that song is so so so so good. I would
pay 200 dollars or more for that song alone if I knew it
would be that good before I bought it and buying it was the
only way to get it.

Listening to a song is a drug, an escape to an altered
state of consciousness

this is why i dont see listening to music, or for that
matter anything you love doing, a waste of time - if you
love doing it and you can lose yourself in it, its certainly
not a waste of time. the experience i get is almost
timeless, i forget that time exists -sometimes thats a great
thing.

I believe there to be a group of individuals, who see the
world on a deeper level.
I believe that we exert violence on eachother because we
were in a naturally evolved environment supposed to hunt
other animals, we would need a barbaric, aggressive side to
us, and this side has not died yet.

I think humans hate the society they live in, the work, the
capitalism, the level of control exerted by the government,
I think we loathe every aspect of it.
So we turn to drugs to escape our reality.
So many people love the effect of drugs, they love to not
feel like apart of society anymore, they love an altered
state of consciousness.
Same with movies and music, it's all about an altered state
of consciousness.

I believe humans have caged themselves in a society they
don't want to live in. A society where free will is
discarded for the better good of the race.
But nobody really wants it.
I think men belong out on a battlefield, hunting and
killing, and women belong at home.

We are to some degree, going back to our roots.
We are exploring our sexuality, our drugs and our music.
Women flaunt their goods, especially younger women, and men
try to flaunt their masculinity, in a game of sex.

Success is rated by the hotness of your girlfriend, the size
of your penis and the clothes you wear.
Much like other animals give respect to fellow animals.

But is this really what humans want?
I believe there to be 2 types of people;
1. The animalistic ones
2. The cogent ones

The animalistic ones usually go back to the roots of humans,
they worry about clothes, money, girls and other such
animalistic things.
The cogent ones are on the other side of the spectrum, they
care about philosophy, music on a deeper level and science.

Why is it that so many cogent people are reclusive? Why do
they shy away from society?
Animalistic people are competitive by nature, they
automatically degrade the cogent ones, out of fear.
They fear what they do not understand, and the only way they
can cope with it is to degrade

offline cx from Norway on 2005-07-19 05:07 [#01667770]
Points: 4537 Status: Regular

them.

Cogent people of course don't care, the "live and let live"
philosophy fits well here.
I believe the human race needs to discard the animalistic
people, for the good of the race.
They are leeches on a society that cogent people made.
Or at least, stop leeching on everything that was made.
Not to say cogent people do not care about dating, they know
fully well the power of sexuality and bonding, but it
doesn't inhibit their lives as much as animalistic behavior
does.
Animalistic people are completely oblivious to most things.

The future lies with people who can further the human race,
not with people who live on their instincts and emotions.

My soul belongs on a barbeque grill. I think that's a beck
lyric. I wonder when the last time I physically touched
another human was. 5...10 years ago? god damn it's hot. I
think I'm in hell already.. or heaven since I think they are
falsely/oppositely advertised much like greenland was.. or
propositions to vote on. I can't believe things actually
happen in time. They certainly don't in whatever sub
universe I inhabit anyway. The most bizarre thing could
happen to me and would consider it equally strange to what
already exists. If I looked in the mirror and saw I had a
pig snout for example I wouldn't really be phased. I am like
the sickliest possible being ever. I'm going to grow a clone
of myself just so I can torture him; I know he would do the
same for me.

I found this read interesting. Everything is such an
insanely complex mess. But one argument is that everything
evolves together, therefore at every step creatures were in
a similar predicament given that they were competing with
things equally sophisticated as themselves (relative to one
another). I bet what we live in right now is extremely
simple and carefree compared to what it will become.
