Would you be willing to donate money for any future activities (like making "Project X" possible)?

A new poll has been set up.

Now, let's discuss. We're planning on creating "Project X" -
a new community site which will be featuring various
IDM/electronica artists and provide a lot of new contents.
To make it possible we might need to invest in more
webspace, bandwidth etc... This is where you come in.

How would this work? Pay for membership? One time donation?
Other suggestions? Tell us your thoughts...

I think a one time membership would be totally
acceptable....Count me in Phobia....

i personally probably wouldn't be willing to pay...
theres lots of info on thenet, and no one site has anything
exclusive enough to pay for...
oh, and remember there are a lot of younger members without
credit cards

but then again.. advertising would suck too, so... i dunno

Hmmm, to be honest I'm only really mad about Aphex... I
don't mind BoC and some other stuff, but I'm happy here...

Maybe let people become members if they donate services?
Like webdesign, programming skills, audio, news, whatever?

i am sorry if i dissapointed anyone

Good in theory, but in practice....Not everyone has these
abilities, and it could turn away punters rather than include
them. }:>

you've got a point there... but i think it would be sad to
pay for a website... I pay enough for the music, i can't
spare more money than that...

Maybe a few dollars - just to help us out. I wouldn't dare
to ask anyone for money really, but the situation may demand
it. :-(

More people - less money for each one.

Because if i pay i'd like to see regular updates... I'm not
paying for static...

FYI: I'm paying $$$ each month all alone to keep the site(s)
alive. I just wanted to get a general feeling about your
interests of the future for this site and if you were
willing to contribue a small part of what I'm already doing.

FYI= For your information

I'd be willing to help out with some cash, but not too
much... college really limits what I can do with my money.
Your site is probably the ONLY site I'm willing to put money
into, it's my favorite.

maybe encorporate ads into the site, i'd click on five
different ones every day if they were here, and i'd buy shit
like movies from amazon links if you put them up.
you get a lot of cash this way.

I don't spend a lot of time cruising around on the interent
but when I'm on I'm usually here or at joyrex. at both
sites I've had many interesting conversations and learned a
lot about electronic music from both communities so being
that I consider this time well spent I don't see a problem
with paying a donation or a one time entry fee.

Since about 50% of you are not willing to make any kind of
donations I could see a scenario where we'll have "Premium
Memberships" and "Standard Memberships".

More to come.

I'd rather not have advertising, but I'd be willing to make
a one-of payment of a few pounds if you could promise the
site would be up for a few more years at least.

On a side note, I'm in the same position as Jarwoski, I
don't mind BoC etc. but I only really like AFX. Perhaps if
you had a poll of how many people wanted
"Project X" first and then asked if they wanted to pay for
it?

hello phobia, hello all,

we should discuss that openly. this issue has already killed
many communities that got victims of their own success
somehow...

i fully understand phobias demand.

so, there are different ways to raise money i think:

- subscription
- (one time) donations
- affiliation programms
- third party sponsorships
- adbanners
- sponored newsletter

i think, we should open the community to some third party
sponsorship:

- why not having some record-labels or print-magazines
presenting parts of the content?

- why not offer a "shop" via the amazon affiliation
programm?

- why not set up a sponsored newsletter that will be sent to
each member?

on the other hand, i don't know if this will bring enough
money...

what do you think?

.a

dollar into the pot...

the money idea wouldn't work. Yes some people would pay up
but a majority of others (although this'll really depend on
the cost) would probably not. the way this site works and
works well is that it's free and brings together a
collective of afx lovers across the world in a space they
can call their own. BUT you have to realise that there are
a lot of other IDM style sites around where the owner pays
for the web space but leaves the site ad and fee free. It
would have to be one dogs bollocks of a site for me to think
of paying. sorry, just my opinion?

I've only just discovered this site and know little/nothing
about how websites are set up, run and funded. Could someone
fill me in. What kind of money has to be put into a site
like this one.

I would be willing to donate if it meant it was kept
independent from any companies or advertisers. This kind of
thing is refreshing precisely because it isn't corrupted by
the corporate culture that dominates our society.

Sorry if that sounds wanky but I love this because its
people communicating without any profit involved or any
compromises. Keep up the good work.

Id defenitly pay, and Im sure that many of not all of the
hardcore regulars would pay too.

The Third Party idea is not bad either... just depends on
which one really.

Its a toughy this one, needs a lot of thought i reckon, as a
lot of sites have been killed off once money is required for
the viewers

presumably the main cost right now is hosting due to high
bandwidth requirements..... why not ask around this
community to see if anyone works/owns a hosting company or
has a suitable server at free/discounted rates?

you never know
