Like when you gotta pee but there is someone there and then
you cannot?

sort of yeah..but only when there are more than 10 people
present.

the best way that works for me is don't think about it at
all. don't think about being onstage - pretend it won't
happen. if you put it out of your mind, you won't worry
about it.

(you must have incrediby strong mind..)

Practice grounding.
As you're walking, standing or sitting before the event,
picture in your mind the image of your feet being firmly
planted on the ground or that of you to your seat.
It works.

Yeah thats probably the easiest way. A couple of drinks can
help loosen you up. Then again if one doesnt drink then this
is most likely out the window.

Goran: I hate when that happens because i really do have to
go but my stupid body is all "ooooooh no you dont mister"
and then i have no say. :(

i really don't. it just takes practice. keep yourself busy
with other things, do projects, read, etc. but any time you
start thinking about your being onstage, change the subject.
think about other things. i still get nervous right before
getting onstage, but at any other point, i don't.

you could drink - obviously it's the easiest way. but it
also doesn't help you build confidence and it never solves
the problem. you will never get used to being onstage
without a drink.

"keep yourself busy with other things, do projects, read,"

i'd be probably thinking why im doing that while doing it
:)

but yes, i must learn to keep my mind off of it..

propranolol is good for the physical symptoms of
stagefright, and wont affect your concentration.

stage fright gets worse and worse as the anxity builds up.
Just do it without dwelling on it.

The best way I found was to get a reaction straight away. Do
something silly/funny, put your headphones on dance like an
idiot for about a minute in silence, then say to the crown
"you should hear this it's great", then hit it....

I find if you get a connection with your audience on a
personal level it is a whole lot easier.

offline r40f from qrters tea party on 2005-06-10 11:34 [#01628821]

well, if i can do it, anyone can. it isn't hard to control
this if you just force yourself and exert willpower. it's
just mind over matter.

no, sorry... but it is approved for this, and is not
addictive, so your doc would prob have no concern about
writing an RX for it.

But even then, it didn't really work for me, but i've heard
that people who have predominantly physical symptoms -
sweating, palpitations, shakes etc - really rate it.

its funny, ive no problems getting up on a stage to talk,
but when im in exams with a teacher and a censor im having
major difficulties.

the stage is like a bubble: your drowned in light and you
only notice the audience if you try really hard to look into
the darkness; Whereas in an exam it is much more personal
and closer to home, it's like being scruitenized at every
step.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2005-06-10 11:58 [#01628846]

oh, it isn't a performance in a classic sense..just when you
need to say something or read something infront of a large
group of people. i remember when i was at college i had that
same problem, but it went away after first few times..i
haven't been doing this sort of thing ever since and it
apperantly came back :)

Drink lots of water. My throat goes dry. I had to do a
massive presentation to about 100 people. I hate getting up
on stage by myself. Strange to think I once did a Piano
recital!

oh my..i think it's essential to begin calm, because if you
mess it up at the start there's very little chance you'll
pull it off because the anxiety would just grow probably..

sweaty palms will almost certainly kill a piano recital,
believe me its happened to me during my music AS.

the easiest way is to know your subject inside and out. be
prepared, and then there's no reason to be anxious.

they bloody aren't! AND theyre prescription only for good
reason. for example, any allergies can be made much worse,
in particular asthma.

OKOK, there are contraindications, but compared to
alcohol/xanax etc mentioned here i think they are far safer,
i know my GP thought they were a fairly benign med. But lets
not get into this, it was just a suggestion.

theres nothing to be ashamed of when youre talking about
something you are not completely in control of, like a
college presentation type thing. I hate doing it because
obviously I know nothing about the topics before this
presentation so I don't feel like the audience respects me
and I dont trust my info particularly either. If at all
possible you should try to have something to say which
should be of interest to people or which you are keen to
talk about, it makes the rest seem more important to you

getting rid of stage fright: lock yourself in a room with a
stage and stare at it and think about all the scary people
that are going to be judging watching you.

OHIJEST

just get out there. if you're talking pre-pre jitters (the
stuff you get a few days ahead), physical exercise
(especially useful if you don't normally exercise, as the
pain will take your mind off it) works.
