New Lynch!

Has this been posted yet?

details

'Titled "INLAND EMPIRE" (in capitals, though Lynch doesn't
explain why), it stars Laura Dern, along with Justin
Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton, Jeremy Irons and a host of
others Lynch won't specify.

In fact, there's still very little the enigmatic Lynch is
comfortable to reveal about the movie.

"It's about a woman in trouble, and it's a mystery, and
that's about all I want to say about it," he comments
diffidently.'

Fucking A!!

I'm never that keen on Laura Dern, but more Lynch + Stanton
is good news.

Jeremy Irons will be interesting too.

Also interesting to see how his style will translate onto
DV.

Shit I've just found out who Stanton is, yeah I loved him in
Wild at Heart. Born in 1926, he looks good for it doesn't
he?

I am worried because apparently it was/is being shot on
digital video format, and Lynch admits it looks cheaper but
that "it has its own charm." Perhaps he has a lack of funds,
or is impressed with the flexibility the format offers, but
I am a bit worried about what it's overall "Look" will be.

However, knowing his directing skills, I'm sure they'll find
a way to make it look just as beautiful as his other movies
in spite of the format.

Eccentric movie-maker David Lynch is so keen to keep the
details of his new movie under wraps at the Cannes Film
Festival, he has insisted that all posters remain covered
until the film airs. The Twin Peaks director has corralled a
group of his regular actors, like Laura Dern and Harry Dean
Stanton, and teamed them up with Jeremy Irons for the
mysterious thriller, reportedly called Inland Empire. The
film will be unveiled at Cannes later this week
,
according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lynch reveals, "It's
about a woman in trouble, and it's a mystery, and that's
about all I want to say about it."

It can't be this quick surely.

Stanton is a legend, Ive yet to see him put in a poor
performance.

Apparently according to John Neff, Lynch has completely put
this film together himself with no studio interference
(probably due to the nightmare he had with Mulholland Drive)
and he's written and filmed it scene by scene, so it sounds
like being his most experimental since Eraserhead. Sounds
genuinely awesome.

I don't think there is anything to worry about. DV doesn't
look "cheaper". It looks different, it can be more dreamy in
a way. Whole video art would not exist without this medium.
I think Lynch is getting wiser and wiser thinking that 35mm
has nothing more to offer as medium to create good,
cinematic picture.

Thanks for the reassurance. I've heard some bad things about
DW, but maybe they were unfounded.

I am very excited about this. Even if it probably won't have
a remotely followable plotline (although I did find
Mulholland Drive pretty understandable) it will have some
brilliant imagery no doubt. Much like Eraserhead.

Chris Cunningham's new stuff is all DV. And also stuff like
28 Days Later is 100% DV. I think he will use it in an
unusual way

Wow its been nearly a year since this thread?

Anyway...

I have just watched a scene from Inland Empire (possibly).
Its very very odd as you'd expect. More menacing on the DV,
perhaps because it seems far more 'real' than film...

I received a promo DVD from a film-tech company with
features about Lynch, who clearly has a deal with these
guys. Its got an in depth 30min documentary of him
discussing the film process, with behind the scenes footage
of 'a recent DV project'. It also has a finished scene,
which is obviously the most exciting part. 'Inland Empire'
isn't mentioned specifically but I imagine it was shot for
the movie.

The scene consists of two women and a man sitting in deck
chairs, in a field. There is some very odd and menacing
dialogue, in which the man says stuff like 'I'm over there'
etc... its a bit like the Mystery Man scene in Lost Highway
at the party. Then the scene darkens all of a sudden, and
the picture gets fucked up a bit. One woman repeats "its
darker" which is very characteristically Lynch... then they
strangly start miming to a song out of nowhere and that part
jarrs a bit.

The whole thing is very Lynch but a lot more menacing, as I
say, because it seems much more real, shakey camera and
everything. The man is very very odd. Its clearly been
visually manipulated, some parts subtley, but it all adds
up. I really can't wait for this.

I think the filmic look of films from the 60's are the best.
I feel rose mary's baby is the prettiest film to me. I'm
talking about the color and composition of everything. I
wonder what techniques they had back then. If those cameras
still exist.

Yeah I got it from the company's website, it was free, I'll
see if I can find the link. As I say its a promo for hte
company.

I'm at work at the moment but when I get home I'll see what
I can do regarding uploading or screen-capping. The scene is
about 5 minutes long.

pf - Its due to premier at Cannes this year, so autumn
release perhaps?

It should premiere at Cannes. Lynch was filming "INLAND
EMPIRE" in my city during January. Newspapers stated that he
was adding more and more scenes to the "script". Also Laura
Dern told the local newspaper that she had no idea what was
it about. She was running thru' foggy streets (in teperature
about -25C) of my sad, grey city in a t-shirt. It would be
damn good coffee if you could share this promo :)

Yep! Im in the UK, I think I ordered it about 3 weeks ago,
but I didn't expect them to actually send it out to Europe
for free. Was a pretty nice surprise!

There's some discussion about whether the clip is from IE or
not, over here

I personally think it is, even if it won't make the final
cut. The scene is from his 'current DV feature' - feature
suggesting a full length, presumably... The actors in the
scene are in the IMDB IE credits... there is a reference to
a 'circus' in the scene, and the IE pictures on that thread
clearly show a circus...

That's pretty cool them filming in your city, man.
