youve got a point, but there are also people who know too much, you feel like you cant talk to them about music because they are into really obscure records and artists you havent heard of...its like you say 'i really love this record' and they say 'ive heard it and i have 10 records of the same genre that are better'...

I get a chill down my spine when someone new asks "so, what kind of music are you into?". I dare say "IDM" because that's followed by "oh, what does that stand for?" I usually just settle for saying "electronic music" and even then it makes me sound like a total geek. People piss me off quite a lot actually.
I have quite a few friends who are into indie music. I actually hate indie music to a major extent so it does create quite a void as quite a big part of me is about music. What's also sad about this is that they think that their indie music is "underground" or whatever when it really isn't. Personally I think if it's popular then it can't be "underground". ARGH, I hate people who make judgements so quickly based on me saying "electronic music" None of them have even listened to 'IDM' and even if I play some to them they're like "nahhh nahhh" before they've even had a chance to listen. They think they know my music when they don't!

Hmm. I'm not sure if it's possible to know too much about a subject (well, this is debatable, as ignorance can be bliss ;)) ..Now the person who knows those 10 records that are better can probably give you really good pointers on where to look next?
Many people who know a bit more about a subject can become difficult to approach not because of the amount of knowledge they have but rather because of the importance they think should be attributed to them through this knowledge. Also called wankers

That's the problem, they like music that's marketed as being "underground", when really it's "mainstream for angsty teenagers who need to grow up".
I like the new greenday album, but the difference is I rightly see it as "alternative pop music" rather than real "underground" music.

yeah, like even for me I'm still maturing in appreciating music. Like I used to listen to abacus 2 quite a bit when I first got the promo. I listened to it the other day and only then realised how amazing the beats are. Now when I listen to indie music I listen out for 'good bits' or whatever but can never hear anything worth appreciating. Even the beats are all mushed together and EQd too quietly!

I just tell people "Music with beats" as often this seems to be a good way to distinguish between melody driven rock derivative stuff or trance and hip hop and more interesting forms of electronic stuff.. Then again it doesn't really describe the full width of my musical tastes but it doesn't need to - people wouldn't understand :)

One of my best frriends is rreally 'into music'. Orr in otherr worrds rreally into the NME. It's drreadful trrying to talk to him, not because i know it all orr that I'm any betterr than he is, but trry talking about any band that in his own worrds 'doesn't fit his image', is worrthless.

if someone told me they liked music with beats, i would assume they are talking about hip hop or rap...
another annoying thing is when someone is playing a garage track and says 'i love this bassline'...to me they all sound exactly the same, certainly no one track has a better bassline then any others...this was actually part of commercial on the BBC for one of their radio stations or something, a man put on a garage track and someone said 'this bassline is wikkid'..no its not you dumbass!

even worse than telling people you like IDM: telling them you listen to punk rock, because they normally assume you listen to blink-182 and shit like that. so you have to be specific and the as you explain that you listen to original punk from the mid-late 70's and hardcore from the early 80's, their nodding becomes increasingly subtle and their smile more agitated and finally they just want to rip out your music snob throat just to make the foul, confusing, boring sounds stop.

I think it's easier to mention bands or artists names rather than a confusing genre label. Then, if the person knows the artists you've mentioned they might be able to talk with you sensibly, but if they've never heard of them there probably is no point in pursuing a conversation about your taste in music. And you can just sit back and switch off while they bang on about some godawful marketing concept and lifestyle accessory misleadingly sold under the name of music.

here's my solution - just lie from now on. everytime you meet someone new, do it just like this:
they'll say, "what kind of music do you listen to?"
i listen to whatever it is that you listen to.
"heh... what?"
i like every sound that has ever been made in the history of the universe. which are your favorites?
"uh... madonna?"
madonna is my favorite music maker, by far. i love madonna and every sound she has ever made, especially the ones that you favor. she has revolutionized music in an important and influential way.
"yeah, she's good i guess... uhh... i've got the new prince album. have you hea---"
prince is the greatest artist ever in the history of creation, including when he went by other, harder-to-pronounce monikers, he is the best of all time and i love his music with all my heart. he has revolutionized music in an important and influential way.
"y-you're nuts, man. i'm out of here..."
i'm nuts all right. nuts about prince and the new revolution. sheila e drives me crazy with pleasure!
"i hate you."
I LOVE THE SAME MUSIC YOU DO! LET'S BE FRIENDS!!!!
