i hate it when people stick to one genre like its their
religion.

escpeially when that genre/religion is metal.

crazone, eventhough you like vsnates a tad too much you
still seem to know your music so i guess you can talk to me
about it :)

r40f...what if you said you liked madonna...and the other
guy said 'ok then lets listen to madonna' and made you sit
through album after album of constant, unbearable madonna?

there's a few different options there, actually.

1. grab the record away with mock-curiosity, "ooh, i love
this record so very very much" and then "accidentally" hug
it to death until it snaps in half / drop it out the
window.

2. same as step one but feed the record to the doggy.

3. start yammering away about your personal connection to
each song as it plays so that you aren't even listening -
you're just talking. this is extra effective if you get a
little crazy, "YES! this is the song where i cut my wrists
wiiiiiide open! right at this riff here! OH yes!"

4. take the opportunity to show how you like to remix this
particular record in your own special way. this of course
involves a lot of scratching and "zip whup whubba" vinyl
sounds. really get into it and v/vm it up. this makes
every record fun.

5. "you know what would make this even better? if we
listened to this outside. down the street a bit. it really
makes the resonance of this particular track come out in a
provocative way."

6. murder them.

7. just sit back and enjoy. madonna's not the end of the
world, you fucking snob.

i didnt mean to imply that *i* considered her to be
unbearable, i was talking about an artist in general, as you
were...that said, i wouldnt want to listen to more than 4 of
her songs in the same day

I think that's sensible. A couple of years ago a good friend
of mine finally asked me the awful question "What music do
you like?" and I said "Ohh..., y'know, Aphex Twin?" and she
said words to the effect off Oh come off it, I read about
him in The Face about 8 years ago... Insinuating that I had
tried to appear cool by naming a cutting edge artist but had
failed because I'd mentioned some flash in the pan
underground prodigy from nearly a decade ago. Women!

they only say what they like because it allows them to 'fit
in'. If you like commercial crap then you're going to fit
in. So basically, by pretending to like stuff you're doing
exactly the same as them. This view is rediculous I know but
it could possibly be true. I'm sure everyone loves 'IDM'
deep down, it's just we're brave enough to admit it!

bob mcbob - i understood that and i was not calling *you* a
snob at all. it was just jokes jokes jokes. sorry.

i could've said any music in the world, but i picked madonna
an prince because they're from the 80's and i thought that
would be funny for some reason.

person B: oh,uh...well,it's nice..it really sounds ok.

yes, it's pretty tough to make something likable for someone
that doesn't know much about alternative/specific
music..perhaps if they're willing to give it a try they
might even like it, but it usually ends after the first
listen..people who appreciate music in general - any genre,
will almost certanly give it a proper listen though..

i usually say, its all about tastes - or sometimes i will
even say - oh you wouldnt like anything i listen to, in fact
you would hate the music i listen to, in order to avoid
talking about it altogether, unless i am really good friends
with the person, in which case i know them and they know me
- therefore we know where we stand on tastes and we can have
a conversation on music without it turning into an argument.

i dont think so, i think its thad and tolstoyed - most of my
friends listen to punk or metal - they hate anything that is
considered popular music ( and i think they hate it because
of that reason ) they are essentially the same ilk as all of
the music elitist here :), but anyway my close friends and i
all grew up on the same music - so its cool that we all
like different stuff now we can all talk openly and honest
about our taste which is the greastest anyone can hope for

take off and landing are indeed the moments during a flight
that have the highest risk percentage. But the actual
flight, take off, and landing aren't the most dangerous
thing with an airplane.

somehow i got the impression you are over 30.
anyway,it's really nice when you can relate with ur closest
friends with the same music taste.
i can also say the same thing, cos over the years i kind of
led them to the way of electronica.
still, they don't like to listen to Ae or Boc,but they adore
downtempo. lol

offline mrgypsum on 2005-03-15 10:33 [#01533851]

i really cant say that i sway my friends tastes or even try
to - they are the ones who are all in bands and all listen
to the unsigned underground punk or metal bands from around
my way - so it is they who "think" their tastes reflect the
true artistic value or something or other - now it may sound
like i look down on that but i really dont think it is a
negative thing - if you are an artist chances are you are
going to like art that you consider good - and in most cases
artists identify with other artists. artists are going to
like music made by other artists - hence not britney spears
or blink 182 - the argument that these individuals are
artists is a debatable one. and thats where me and my
friends agree

yes,i completely know what you think.
i think it's important to have friends with similar tastes
in music...atleast we don't argue when we go out,cos
everyone is okay with the music that plays.
