My CD are dying

I have noticed recently that my older CDs are jumping. Is
this usual? Is there a way to stop this happening? My
collection dates back to the mid 80's and a lot of stuff I
have is rare...

jumping = skipping ??

clean your cds, clean your cd players

if all else fails, throw all away and buy cassettes

I don't know about old cds, but if the cds have deep
scratches in that make them unplayable, you can stick them
in the freezer for a couple of days on a little tray or
something similar. I'm not making it up, it really does
work.

nothing is perfect nor forever, but it definitely hurts when
it's like this.

(i borrowed some cds who belong to my father and they play
just fine in my portable cd player, but i don't know how old
they are...)

...if i believe the label, his copy of 'Money Jungle' by
Duke Ellington i played a few days ago without problems is
from 1987.

my portable cd player never skipped on anything actually (it
has other defects, but not this one).

i usually clean them with dishwashing liquid. that seems to
do the trick most of the time.

i've heard of older cd players giving out and causing cds to
skip or stutter. but this is the first i've heard of a cd
wearing down from age. if this is true about their shelf
life, it's something to be concerned about...

does anyone know a way to safely back-up audio for the long
haul? yes, i know about records lasting forever, but what
about if you want to store audio information that isn't on
vinyl? every media i can think of will eventually destroy
the contents...

my old cd player is completely fucked. the slightest scratch
changes the disc. i am gratefull when it actually plays a
cd. when it recognises a cd it takes about half an hour to
start playing it. i use it mostly for tapes.

you could try the ones that jump on another cd player, then
you'll know for certain. all lasers will eventually burn
out, become low gain and not be strong enough to read the
information on the cd.

its funny, cause up untill cd's started rotting, the music
industry was marketing cd's as an alternative to anything
else cause they will last 1000 years. They didn't mention
that they needed to be kept inside a vacuum sealed case
stored in a 0 gravity environment.

it says on those sites that it isn't an industry-wide
problem and only affects discs manufactured by PDO between
1988 and 1993.

i wouldn't say it was anal to look after your own
posessions. there are instances of older cds that have mold
growing on them. if this happens you are entitled to send it
back to the manufacturer and they will replace it, if it has
not been deleted.

My Aphex Twin On (UK version) has some weird rot or
oxidation creeping in from the outer edge. I've long since
backed it up to hard drive, though. This is the only CD I've
noticed this happening to so far.

I often get an old cd from it's jewel case after a long time
sleep (the cd's sleep). only to find out major scratches
appear magically on them.

I'd just like to say that none of my CDs have got anything
wrong with them. My Auteurs vs µ-ziq has a white patchy
sheen on it, and so does my 76:14 but they've been like that
for years and has never affected play.

No rot, no corrosion, no scratches.

Some of the older ones don't play in new CD ROM drives, but
that's to be expected. They all play fine in regular CD
players.

Hi,

I have studied cd rot for a long time now. Much has been
said about it by you guys. A couple things i will say about
it to make it all clear. Cd rot only appea0rs (till now) to
PDO discs. And NOT all the PDO discs. The PDO discs made
between late 80's and early 90"(1993 - 94) have a risk of
bronzing. The newer PDO discs with the plastic edge (older
pdo discs has silver edges) don't have cd rot. I am a cd
collector and i m collecting especially the older stuff (uk
stuff) and i have seen a lot of bronzing. I had to send many
cd back to their Ebay sellers. Thats very bad. CD rot is or
are brown spots around the edges of the cd (on the reading
side of the disc or label side or both), or the whole edge
is brown collored. It's also possible that cd rot begins in
the centre of the disc. So, be carefull with buying classic
Uk stuff form the early 90's (UK because PDO is a britisch
company) cd rot is progressive. When the cd have it, it
won't be playable anymore after years (skipping). BUT
remember!! ONLY early PDO have cd rot. And SOME of the old
pdo discs has cd rot, not all of them!
I always ask an Ebay seller if the disc hase brown spots on
them. And i think discs without bronzing and the whole other
bunch (newer) cds will be with you for a life time if you
are carefull with them. Don't worry!!

my cds are all scratched to fuck because i throw away the
cases (i never used them anyway so i though fuck it) I have
6 of those case logic cases to store them, but i don't even
use them, i just stack them up on eachother. but as my post
above states: MP3s do not die, ever - you just have to keep
buying 160gig discs to back them up
