i've got to say, this would probably be a real issue if we
were all exchanging major label material like metallica or
fucking busted or something every second thread, but at the
current rate, i can hardly say its enough to start banning
people.
especially when it involves music that is really hard to get
a hold of otherwise. in fact, in some cases, its impossible.

on the contrary, i'd say... the small labels are suffering
from this.... not the big ones.

i hate to repeat myself over and over again... but what
you're doing OUTSIDE this messageboard is not of my
business. go ahead and download anything you want, but this
site is mainly built on trust... i'll probably lose all my
contacts/channels/connections to the artists and labels if
they know xltronic is hotlinking to commersial newly
released mp3's.... that would spoil the whole thing and at
least I would get bored if my inside connections was lost
due to stupid actions from a stubborn member.

note that we won't be strict on links to bootlegs and
livematerial. it's all about common sense really ... i
thought it was quite obvious that what jaroen was doing
would result in something like this...

why are you moaning about it?

we're not moaning about it; we just want clarification on

i'd say the main reason that small labels suffer is because
theyre distribution is crap. loads of people on here live in
places where this music isnt as readily available, also the
fact that they only release things on vinyl and not cd
(analord being a fine example) means that people who love
this music cant get access to it, with the exception of
mp3's.
not for me, i can get a hold of a lot of great great music
in Glasgow, because the shops here get it easily, and i know
lots of people who DO go out and buy everything on the
rephlex/skam/seed/city centre offices/toytronic ect
roster.....and thats just in one small city in the UK.

ALSO....the prices being asked for (analord being a prime
example again) puts people off splashing their well earned
cash.

and pffff, if warp think theyre suffering, maybe they should
start putting out good music again.

I'm not sure that you can put their suffering to
distribution since if they were really that bothered, they
would mailorder it.

Similarly for releasing on vinyl, if people were really that
bothered, they would fork out for an el-cheapo turntable.

Personally I try to strike a balance between buying and
downloading material. I don't buy everything that I own but
I still make an effort to purchase enough material so as to
feel like I am supporting the people who make the music.
Different people will have different balances.

all phobia is saying is that it looks terrible that some of
the members here are essentially giving away brand new, hot
off the presses releases - plus whats going to happen
everytime a new highly anticipated release is released, how
is it going to look if it is popularly know that the link to
an mp3 is posted here for all to see - i dont think it could
be any clearer than that as far as i am concerned, and this
is coming from a person who did not buy analord 10, i would
rather not hear it or not get it.

"i'll probably lose all my

i can perfectly understand this, but those labels should
really know better. the effect of this could be in their
favour and they definitely gain a lot from sites like
xltronic so that alone makes me hate them all!!!

it's his site, he doesn't have to warn you each and every
time.

like I said before, it's just common sense that phobia
wouldn't want his site to be seen as a traficker of mp3s,
especially on a release that just came out that day.

and JAroen has been temp banned so many times it makes my
head spin.. :)

it's his damn site, and he can do what he wants... and all
it takes is a little common sense to realize it's not a
smart thing to link to copyrighted mp3's... especially on a
site that is dedicated to music and such... a site that the
artists we talk about, and who's mp3's might be linked, come
and visit from time to time... so there is a difference
between mp3's and pictures...

also, JAroen is a bit annoying anyways... can't really hurt
the message board to have him banned...

offline pf from Finland on 2005-01-15 09:13 [#01460225]

I'd like to thank JAroen for linking up the mp3. I could
have gotten the release in mp3 format from several other
place's, but from JAroen I got it as fast as possible.

I think analord was an exception, I don't usually seek for
mp3's in this forum. The main reason I hang around here are
the lovely people. I didnt purchase the Analord 10 package
when it was available, because i didn't want to buy another
release like Smojphace. And secondly, I don't own a record
player. But when I got the mp3's of Analord, i felt that I
should have bought it. Now I'm hoping for a CD release, and
will definetly buy that, and if there ain't going to be CD
release, I could buy the release in mp3 format.

So my bottom line is that people who got it from here,
probably just wanted to hear it. I quess many will buy it
after they've heard it and the future Analord releases.

And I dont think that there should be more 0day mp3's on the
board, no. But I hope that Phobian doesn't ban the mixes
people make, those are real nice, for music lovers like me.

I'm afraid you're not seeing this in a longer perspective,
but I don't blame you since I'm prolly the one that cares
the most about this site & messageboard. I'm pretty sure
that all major messageboards would have done the same
(Joyrex?). It's all about common sense really... If you're
not realising the harm it may bring, then it's your problem
- not mine.

While you were thinking "yay! a link to analord mp3's....
gotta download them RIGHT NOW.... hey what? did you temp.
banned jaroen for providing a hotlink? you NAZI! i don't get
it... it's on vinyl anyway and i just don't have a goddamn
turntable!? i don't really care what happens to this
messageboard anyway... i SIMPLY WANT MY ANALORD MP3's TO
WHATEVER PRICE... as long as I can download it for
free."
"

... i was thinking... "damn....someone is hotlinking to
commersial mp3's on my site... could this harm the site?
will this happen to autechre's new release as well? is this
a BAD or a GOOD thing? hard choice.... NOT! i'd better
remove the link right away... oh, it was jaroen again. why
does he challenge his mb-existenze every goddamn week?
"

on a 2nd thought... maybe i would have done the same thing
if this wasn't my site... maybe if it was viringpusher's
site.... i'd have acted the same.... w/o thinking or care
about any future consequenses.... i just want my new APHEX
so godamn much to WHATEVER price... as long as i can do it
for free.... damn them if they remove the link... now i will
just have to wait another 5 days until i can download it
from soulseek!!!!!

btw... i'm NOT receiving promos from ANY labels at
all...

I really think most of the people understand that you forbid
hotlinking mp3's from now on, but it is more the way you did
it I guess
there were more hotlinks in the past you know

why not make a sticky topic of this subject? before acting
like this all of a sudden...

and besides, if there are any users who haven´t been here
for a few weeks and don´t read this topic, still don´t
know...

Phob:
Why don't you make your position clear?
Nowhere it says multiple accounts=perm ban, and hotlinks to
mp3s=ban, etc.

Why not write all these things down, make a popup, saying I
agree when you sign in, so it only bothers you once a visit,
then people have nothing to complain about.

Yeah but that's my point, you can't claim it is common
knowledge. For example say someone who signed up 3 years ago
logs in infrequently and doesn't read any posts pertaining
to multiple accounts or other 'thorny issues'.
How do they know?

I bought a kiddie paddling pool the other day for my 9 month
old son. The inflatable pool fills to a depth of, ooooh, I'd
say 2 inches. On the side are three paragraphs of US saftey
regulations, some obvious, "don't leave the child
unattended", some less so, "no diving". Nowhere on the pool
does it say "do not wrap round your neck and set fire to the
plastic inhaling deeply the fumes" How am I supposed to know
not to do that unless I am reminded EVERYTIME i want to use
the pool?

I don't know why you would want to make multiple accounts,
but then I don't see the big problem with it either.
To be honest I don't really care if people get banned or
not, I just wanted there to be something in place to stop
all the moaning that goes on.

To be honest I'm with dog_belch on this one, wtf do you
expect to happen? Someone like Jaroen new what would happen,
so why the big deal?

not all mp3s aren't illigal, but there are illigal mp3s.

maybe you need to take a discrete logic course to get this
understanding across. it's quite fundamental.

you do not own the message booard, and thus, you do not
suffer consequences such if anything shall happen. give it
up, already.

---oh, and don't ask ppl on the message "omg why would
someone make a dupe account"

because it's been done numerous times by numerous
people....so that is an irrelevant question.

someone gets banned, first thing they're gonna do is wait
then try to make a new account. (from the figures)
