Venetian Snares vs. Squarepusher

tho, squarepusher has more sense for melody and traditional
structure, I find Aaron Funk to be much more fresh! He is so
sharp and quite free, tho I don´t think his melodies would
be worth lstening to alone...

are you kidding snares is like 7 feet tall he would clobber
him

yes lets finally get this outt the way....

venetian snares = shit melodies

squarepusher = fucking great melodies

Vsnares is really just a dumbed down hardcore version of
squarepusher. really, imo.

i don't think melody is a concern of his...he's more
rhythmic than melodic.

squarepusher

Snares is possibly technicaly better, but squarepusher makes
better music

Ceephax is probably snares and pushers secret love child

both are great in rythms, but I really prefer snares
nowdays, his so sick... and he looks really unsympathetic
too!

actually I listen to songs like Arched Pathway, and I
realize that Squarepusher is more hardcore at times, yet he
can play live instruments and understand jazz.

sqarepusher is too bebop, jazz influenced for me, at least
in hard normal daddy, it´s just drill n bass easy
listening. Snares is fucking everything backwards, that´s
his secret, tho I have hard to belive he uses fl studio...
And I can´t understand how aaron can make only hc drill n
bass, I would get compleatly mad....

I find you have to be more "in the mood" for snares though.
Sometimes my head can't take it and I just have to turn it
off. Squarepusher can pretty much be played anytime

Snares is possibly technically better?

Snares has the sloppiest music in idm, if you ask me.
Squarepusher represents the top of technical anal
retentiveness.

i would also say squarepusher i better.. both tecnically and
musically. although vsnares is awsome as well, but he
does'nt have a chance againt tom.

Squarepusher is better for melodies but Vsnares is
unbeatable for awesome breaks (e.g. "Children's Limbo",
"Find Candace", "Epidermis", "Dad").

despite his music being good, squarepusher comes across as a
pretentious wanker!

offline MrDwatt from Helsinki (Finland) on 2004-11-24 13:10 [#01404602]

squarepusher can bulid longer rytmical patterns taht
actually work togheter while snare only make lots of flipper
drums after each other, and that is indeed the amusement...

yeah pushers stuff is so much more dense , harmonically and
ebbs and flows more, though i think with stuff like HCCBU
aaron is really getting damn good, it has sick melodies and
insane yet measured drums.. who knows , maybe 5 years down
the line things may be different. but for now tom all the
way.

I had this discussion with a couple friends one time. I
always used to be hard on Snares, but when they started
preaching the superiority of Squarepusher I found myself
defending him (snares). I'd say Squarepusher might be a bit
more talented simply for the sake of diversity and some
level of musicality. Snares really has zero sense of melody
or nuance.. his melodies sound like the shit I come up with
when I'm having a bad day and later end up scrapping. I'm
really surprised he goes to press with some of it. On the
flip side, i am simply awed by his drum programming ability.
It's astonishing, nothing short of jaw-dropping.
Squarepusher has tracks like this too, but I find the pure
power of Snares' stuff to be unparalleled.

SquarePussha!! makes great melodic songs with fabulous
technical structures, i love his music....but vsnares is
sooooo boundless, I love that in experimental music..I
definately vote venetian snares!!!!

not sure i get it...what's experimental about either of
them?

i see you're going to hit 30.000 pretty soon..and i've to
tell you the definition off experimental music? ok
I'll give it a try:

"experimental music: surch for music/sound yet to be
discovered"

for all those stating that vsnares has no formal musical
training, you are incorrect, he has a wide range of
instrumental talents and a very strong knowledge of formal
musical theory.

he has made the choice to make music outside of this, using
more advanced or "experimental" melodic scales and dabbling
inside serialism from what i have picked up.

his music is focused more on rhythms which evolve and
transform in ways that are outside of the norm, something
very unique. according to him, he strives to create music
which moves along faster rhythmically than more traditional
music.

when it comes to squarepusher, he has a great sense of
melody, but stylistically he has remained very consistent
throughout his career, using very similar compositional
structures as his previous works, as well as borrowing
heavily from jazz and other genres. to me, this seems what
seperates snares and squarepusher; ground-breaking rhythm
structures, versus what has seemed to be a refinement of
traditional structures, both melodically and rhythmically
with the addition of electronic production and texturing.

in short, vsnares continues to do new things with the pace
of music, pushing the standards of highly-complex, well
developed rhythms, whereas squarepusher is taking the
traditional elements of jazz and integrating them into the
traditional elements of electronic music.

in my opinion you cannot compare a futurist with a
traditionalist.

(im so pretentious)

corticalsti, what makes you think VSnares has any formal
training? I can't hear any serialism in his music, or
"unconventional" scales; more just simple, shitty melodies
(imho.)

I prefer Squarepusher overall, although sometimes I like
VSnare's insane drum abuse, it can be really exciting.
They're both brilliant fun.
