I've watched loads excellent Asian movies recently, I feel their must be other countries making films to the same standard. Reccomend me some good contemporary movies from other countries (not America).
I'm looking forward to the new film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, A Very Long Engagement

Historias Minimas (Minimal Stories) Director: Carlos Sorin Argentina 2002
1hr 31m Subtitled
Using mainly non-professional actors, this charming Argentinian road movie interweaves three tales of people seeking their dreams amidst the epic landscape of Patagonia. Old Don Justo’s eyesight is failing, but he’s still determined to hitch to a distant town where his missing dog Badface has been spotted. Roberto is a travelling salesman hoping to impress a young widow with a birthday cake for her kid. Impoverished Maria travels towards a game show taping and her dream prize.
2 years old, so not strictly contemporary i suppose, but definitely worth it if you can seek it out. Excellent, excellent film.

"2 years old, so not strictly contemporary i suppose, but definitely worth it if you can seek it out. Excellent, excellent film."
2 years is fine, I would class Wong Kar Wai as a contemporary director who has made films over the last decade. Films don't have to be very new to be contemporary.
Anyway thanks for the reccomendation, I'll check it out.

a little asian dvd rental store just opened in my neighbourhood, most of the stuff they have is subtitled in english. i'm a very happy bunny, and will gladly keep you informed on any gems i come across (there's a lot of stuff).
the romantic comedy section is hilarious.

i dunno why but i have a problem with pedro.... there's only so much hispanic histerics i can take, i enjoyed a few though don't get me wrong...i just don't see the big deal.
i like a lot of the actresses he uses, rosi de palma and victoria april are fun.

that's victoria abril...victoria april sounds like a porn acctress :)
his hable con ella is one of my favorite films...not only the dialoges, music and plot are excellent, he extended it to a beautiful camra work and photography in this one...it was great in his other films as well, but this one is just a step further i think.
his films are just fun to watch...he mixes so many emotions, makes you laugh one minute and cry the next.

other nice spanish films: not much really, i would recommend the recent "inconscientes" by joaquim oristrell, and the films by marc recha (catalan-french films: 'pau i el seu germà ' or 'les mans buides' <---) who have really really contemporary/postmodern, minimalistic style, imo, similar (but not the same) to kieslowski, kaurismaki, or even won kar wai...

library isn't too bad, i'll have a look there in the week.
Rental places are shit, they only have mainstream movies.
I usually buy foreign films and just hope they are good, i'd like to see them before buying though if its possible.
Woman in the Dunes isn't even released here :(

Hayao Miyazaki's next movie looks promising. (director of masterpiece anime movies such as Princess Monoke and Spirited Away ,My Neighbor Totoro)
Early trailer (save as)
"A love story between an 18-year-old named Zofî, cursed by a witch into an old woman's body, and a magician named Hauru. Under the curse, Zofî sets out to seek her fortune, which takes her to Hauru's strange Moving Castle. In the castle, Zofî meets Hauru's fire demon, named Karushifâ. Seeing that she is under a curse, the demon makes a deal with Zofî--if she breaks the contract he is under with Hauru, then Karushifâ will lift the curse that Zofî is under, and she will return to her 18-year-old shape"

Funny Games is amazingly creepy and fun. So is The Piano Teacher (also by Michael Haneke), if you take away the fun. Real good feel bad movie that one..
I used to dislike Almodovar but this last year I've seen some decent films by him, "Carne Trémula" etc..
You need to see "The Celebration" by Thomas Vinterberg, one of the best films I've ever seen..
Robert Guédiguian's La Ville Est Tranquille is an amazing movie about the life on the backside of Marseille, loads of stories weaving together type of deal. Quite political and really emotionally strong in places.
