THE 'IDM' THEORY

That is because their music relies on gimmicks and gimmicks
are only impressive the first time around. The second time
someone passes you a jar of nuts with coiled spring snakes
in it, it isn't as cool, unless you like to eat coiled
spring snakes.

I think I still like even sub standard, newer works by afx,
autehre, mu-ziq, even cylob, because you can see it as part
of their larger body of work. But new tykes turning up and
doing the same old bollocks is just, inexcusable.

I think a big part is that the latter releases lack the
microscopic control of fast complex detail. I guess fast
intricate continually interesting detail is the thing I like
most for some reason... but after listening to a few of
telefon's new tracks for example, there was very little
insane computerized wicked detail as compared with tracks
1,2 and 3 on farenheit. I didn't listen to the rest of the
new album though so maye there is. Funkstorung too..
appetite was computerizingly wicked but the new tracks I
heard stepped back rather than forward in that respect. Then
aphex twin's drukqs is the same relative to come2daddy.
Autechre's latter releases, like draft, seem to contain more
repetition. There still interesting computer control but
there seems to be less effort in doing something awesome
with it. Most people don't even share the "intricate/
complex = better" music view as me anyway.

wow. what a load of poop said in this thread.

Ok, yes technology is making things easier, and therefor
more people can create music.

While yes, it means more people, with less skill are making
music... how is this really a bad thing?

I for one, think its great that people can make art.
Anything that lets more people create is good. So maybe its
not the most amazing stuff in the world, and maybe it
doesn't even deserve to be heard by the masses... but if the
people making it like it, and it makes them happy then
good.

You can also look at it from another view point. The more
shit there is, there more people will have to work, and the
better the result will be. It will make the good stuff,
truely great, in order to be recognized from the crap.

Say we have someone making this awesome
woooshhkaaalalachickawowthickto sound. Thats fucking cool!
And it took them 10 hours to just program the woooshhkaaa
part. Well, now lets say that there is a program that makes
it possible to make that sound in less then an hour. How is
this bad? Because people dont have to be hardcore
programmers? Uh, excuse me, but we are still talking about
music right? Its not whats behind it, but the emotional
impact. Yes, sure there is lots of interesting complex stuff
that goes into making music, and if you dig that... thats
cool. But its important not to be clouded by this fasination
with the method (as cool as it can be)... remember music,
and what it conveys.

So if more programs are around that make making music
easier, I say good. It takes the emphasis off of the wanking
side of things, and puts more emphasis on the musical
application of these things. (and it will push people to go
further and further with new developments) so I really think
its quite good for everyone

Also... ok, so more people are making music. So? Unless you
are going around listening to all the artists on netlabels,
you are getting your music from a record label who signs,
and pays musicians. So isnt it up to the labels to weed out
the crap?

dont blame people who are impassioned to write music and
express themselves. the labels control the flow of
quality... so dont blame the people who are just trying to
enjoy art. If anyone is to blame, its the labels, for lack
of vision and a basic knowledge(intuition) of what is good
and what is not.

ever since i read autechre have been reading philosophy
lately, it does indeed seem their latter tracks have a
philosophical theme (if that even makes sense). It's like
they're largely focusing on communicating things abstractly
"that can't be expressed in words" now regardless of whether
the output is a fantastically intricate aural sculpture like
they were in ep7/lp5. Parelehic triangle (spelling) is an
example. Maybe it's a good companion to some striking
philosophical idea, but as far as strict listening goes it's
not that pleasant imo.

you guys are all just to fucking spoiled. always wanting to
hear something new or innovative. well go make something
innovative yourself. or shut up about it. try to enjoy the
music as it is. why isn't anyone nagging about techno?
techno still sounds the same as it did 20 years ago. you
know why? because people just think to much of idm. IT'S
JUST MUSIC!!!

ever since i read autechre have been reading philosophy
lately, it does indeed seem their latter tracks have a
philosophical theme It's in their interests to foster the
perception that most
unsigned artists are crap because when they pay politicians

to legislate away the right to possess the means of
production and distribution, hey, no great loss, right?
So if more programs are around that make making music
easier, I say good. It takes the emphasis off of the wanking

side of things, and puts more emphasis on the musical
i agree with the comments of the original post, although i'm

undecided on if it's a good or bad thing. i think i am a
great example of this. my music is pretty bad, but at the
same time i am grateful to have had the oppurtunity to
easily give it a go without spending years learning to play

an instrument (though i certainly wish i had) or thousands
of dollars on expensive hardware. the only thing i do know
for sure is that i hate that pretentious attitude carried by

so many nowadays that the ninjatune blurb refers to.
Also... ok, so more people are making music. So? Unless you
