hey, i haven't read any of this thread but it must be
interesting judging by the number of posts. so if you
wouldn't mind, could somebody summarize the entire
discussion to thus far? it will save me a lot of time and
such.

thanks,

evolume

aristotle thinks amateur musicians making IDM has ruined the
genre. some people agree, some people don't.

'IDM' is boring now, teens with dedicated 'IDM' software
spewing out clone style nonsense. artists that created the
'IDM' paradigm were drawing their influences from techno,
electro, world music, ambient, jazz, synth pop,
new wave, house, acid, dub, classical etc etc etc 90% of
todays bedroom button pushers only influence is IDM, so it
becomes like a snake eating it's own tail.

so maybe we should all just start using clean samples from
"old" 'IDM', like AFX, ae, BoC etc.

no further manipulation, just clean snippets and then
finally the whole thing will implode on itself with a huge
belch-like sound.

I didn't say that! that was a sumarization of the 'brains'
of XLT... I can't express my inner thoughts on this
matter...

Perhaps as featured in "Last of the Summer Whine about How
Bad IDM is now".

it's like skateboarding.
now everybody's doing it, but every once-in-a-while a Danny
Way or Steve Olson comes along and blowed up your fukin'
mind. but there is always some skinny dork, slippin' around
in his fruit boots thinkin' he be tony hawk.

the white stripes can make kick ass songs with just a
fucking guitar and a drum kit.

it doesn't matter what you use, or how much it cost you. if
it's good, it's good.

i don't know any music
maker whose main influence is "I.D.M"

liar. most of the online amateur electronica-producing
community (that this very site is part of) would cite IDM
records in their top ten influences.

it's a staggeringly observant comment that the majority of
the new 'IDM' wannabes are mostly if not entirely influenced
by nothing other than IDM.

a snake eating its own tail indeed.

I'd have to agree with that.

but in the end - this all isn't a problem. more people make
music, you still have to keep your ears open to find the
stuff you like.

that's the whole point about this thread - the problem
presented here solely exists in the minds of people. it's
only as much a problem as you make it yourselves.

let every other person make an "album" (collection of 128
k/s mp3s) and present it on their "label" (bit of webspace)
- if you want, go ahead. maybe there's more shit to wade
through, but there will always be interesting and/or
worthwhile music to be found.

yarr.

i think it's safe to say that some very poignant points have
been made here today, and also that some egos have perhaps
been bruised.

i have no energy to go trough the whole thread filled with
irrelevancy but isn't it all just about good music?

idm for me is good music. who cares who makes it? i know
many many many brilliant bedroom musicians (including the
people i live with).

there is good old idm, good new idm (though not many artists
have a long lifespan), and most of all good music that isn't
idm.
