[XLTVIBES#13] Classical Vibes!

offline qrter from the future, and it works (Netherlands, The) on 2004-06-13 12:17 [#01238153]

It is time for yet another fanciful compilation from YOU,
the scintilating xltronicommunity!

As initiated by the great nobsmuggler this time we're
going for a Classical vibe and I will mix the whole
thing. Hopefully. Kind of.

What are we looking for this time?

Basic word is classical music.

This can mean that you can make your own (modern) classical
piece, electronically generated.

This can mean that you make a thumping dancetrack, using
samples from classical pieces.

In short: This means you can make any piece of music
that is created electronically and is in some way related to
the classical music we all love (or, god forbid, hate!).

Yes! That is pretty broad! But that's music for you, I
guess.

We're striving for a mix that will be under 80 minutes,
conforming to the usual length of cd-r's.

If we receive tracks in total length more than 80 minutes, a
small and secret panel of xlt-members will select the
appropriate tracks - so don't be disappointed if your track
isn't selected..

BASIC RULES & INFO:

You can make any piece of music that is created
electronically and is in some way related to the classical
music we all love.

Tracks can be submitted in just about any form but try to
keep the soundquality as high as possible - so if
you're submitting a mp3 make the quality/bitrate as high
as possible
- I have DSL so it's no problem, for me at
least.

Tracks can be e-mailed to me:
qrterATtkwsping.nl

(also good for any questions, problems, etc!)

Tracks can be offered to me through slsk - my slsk-nick is
quite amazingly qrter..

A link in this thread to a server wiv your track onnit is
ofcourse also great!

ENDDATE: Sunday 25th of July

good luck!

I'll submit something if this doesn't end earlier than the
next couple months... something quite grand indeed, with a
very good possibility of having a real orchestra backing it
up... but might not be within that time frame that I can get
quality samples with them

sounds good.. but I have to keep a kind of taut deadline -
otherwise people'll push it to the back of their heads and
nothing will get done!!!

WHICH WOULD BE DISASTROUS!!!

electronic?

hmmm.

I mean, my piece is sequenced, but other then that, its
meant to be a chamber piece... no electronics at all.

I was kind of hoping it would be meant as a(n)
chamber/orchestral comp...

but if it isnt... I want to submit a different piece...

well, it can be sequenced - that would qualify as the track
being made electronically.

not to be a pain or anything... but how are we defining
classical? Literally classical.... or a catch all term for
chamber/orchestral music?

just curious...

offline Bremzen from utrecht (Netherlands, The) on 2004-06-14 07:09 [#01239379]
Points: 653 Status: Lurker

i think we should define it for ourselves... be it broad
(everything with "classical" instruments, ie
chamber/orchestral) or narrow (mozart/haydn/beethoven).

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2004-06-14 07:23 [#01239387]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker | Followup to Bremzen: #01239379

yes, but they are also saying it can include electronics.

I dunno... its just not very clearly defined I dont think.

if its a dance track, with a piano, and violin...does it
qualify?

instrumentation doesnt nessasarilly dictate style.

and I think, if there is no true defined style, and you can
use electronic sounds as well... its just very very hazy on
what the standards are for the comp.

offline Bremzen from utrecht (Netherlands, The) on 2004-06-14 07:41 [#01239404]
Points: 653 Status: Lurker | Followup to Zeus: #01239387

why would anyone want to dictate a "style"? why would there
have to be a "standard"?
there is a concept which everyone can interpret
individually, that's what makes this interesting imo.

qrter gives us "classical"... and that's all. let's go ahead
and see what everyones personal view is with that given
concept/idea/whatever.
hell, maybe i'll even make a electronic sonata, so just a
classical (more THE classical) form... no violin or trumpet
whatsoever. we'll see.

It's clear to me.

It must use classical instruments.

well, I mean, when you say "lets have a dnb comp" its rather
clear. the comp will have a general adhesive element,
because everyone here knows what dnb is.

but when you take a term like classical (which is so open
anyways... do we mean the true classical style, or as a
catch all for chamber/orchestral music of any time period
and style) and then say that it can be electronic... to me,
there is nothing that would relate any of these tracks
together, to truely make it a "themed" compilation.

why call it a classical compilation, if the result does not
relate to the title.

sure, if you want everyone to just interpert it on thier
own, fine... but I doubt there will be much consistancy in
the tracks, and not even good enough cause to name the comp
"the classical vibes"

see what Im saying?

Ceri: highest quality possible please!

you can find me on slsk under qrter but you can mail
me the track too - although I think there might be a max to
how large the file can be..

easiest, but certainly not given for all, is to upload it
somewhere so I can, um, download it. :)

but I see you already have some kind of deal with giginger?

..which is exactly why I didn't want to partake in something
like a "dnb" comp.

there have been comps before that were even looser than this
one (Pomme's "pillow" vibes for example).

my definition would be that most (if not all)
samples used be of classical instruments.

I'm not defining style because I can't ask that - there will
only be a tiny group that has the necessary musical
knowledge to pull off a classically styled piece. and I'm
not in that group! :P
that said, if you do have that knowledge and want to use it
- great! chances that your track will be on the comp
increase a lot, I think.

I really can't get worried about this - but we will probably
get more than 80 minutes and then we will choose a
definitive line to follow with the comp BUT.. the clearer
the connection to classical music/instruments in your track,
the higher your chance of inclusion.

so if it's a thumping dance-track with a violin peep every
minute, that probably won't get in..

I do rather want an offbeat Vibes, if at all possible. :)
