best shell replacement for XP

I'm looking for decent, low resource usage Shell
Replacements for Windows XP.

I tried the newer builds of LiteStep, but it's really gone
downhill in the past few years.

Explorer is running fast enough under Virtual PC, but I'd
like to see if any other shells will run as fast (or
hopefully faster)

Just buy a PC...how many PC owners do you know who want to
run a Virtual Mac? None...why?...because everything they
ever need is on the PC and a lot cheaper and easily
available.

Just a side note...I have never once experienced a crash in
Windows XP. Good day.

did the program crash or the whole operating system?

They don't crash but they are awfully slow and suck at multi
tasking, especially compared to win2k.

No they aren't...they use the Win2k core, you are
perpetuating a myth.

wait

why do you need virtual pc to run explorer?

ok, where did i mention about XP crashing?

*methinks ecnadniarb is in a fight mongering mood*

how have you been this week anyways? hope it's been ok for
you?

>roygbivcore

i need Virtual PC to run explorer because I have a PowerBook

It depends what you were trying to run. I accept some
packages would run more efficiently on Win2k but that had no
real support for games and shit. Windows XP is a proper
operating system, and for the price of a Mac you can get a
powerful as fuck Windows box.

ecnadniarb is right mate

Windows XP is basically Windows NT 5.1 whereas Windows 2000
is Windows NT 5.0

Windows XP is really just Windows 2000 with shitty visual
themes added

i still don't get why you can't run explorer on a power
book

is it a shitty power book?

Well I have disabled all themes, all aditional services,
transfered all the settings I had from 2k and XP run like
shit concerning tasks suck as:

i)Sound card incompatibilities with games which I never had
with 2k(and I have the same drivers)
ii)Burning cds take up much more resources as well as dvd
playback
iii)Problems with antialiasing I never had with 2k (and I
have the latest drivers installed)

oh and on 2k I never experienced a problem with any game. So
there you have it.

an Apple PowerBook runs the Macintosh Operating System known
as Mac OS X.

I am running version 10.3.4 of this operating system.

It is not an intel based machine, therefore cannot run
explorer natively.

It can however emulate a PC, so I use Virtual PC to run
Windows

just out of curiosity, is the copy of Windows XP that you
installed a pirate copy?

Sometimes pirate copies of software is fucked up. I have had
a couple of duff copies of Win98 in the past

OK so you had hardware driver problems under XP, that isn't
the fault of the operating system.

above with my brother's laptop. He had an original copy of
XP home edition.

DVD-Roms and CD writers have no drivers... so I could only
guess it's the XP. Also tasks such as explorer take more
time to load compared to 2k. The same occured with my
previous computer. Look I can't claim I know more than the
basics here but I'm not talking out of my ass.

Wrong...Windows XP Home is essentially identical with the
Pro edition with certain administration and services
disabled/removed because they weren't deemed necessary for
the nonpower user. The core of the operating system and
critical services are identical on both Home and Pro
versions.

It sounds as though you have done something, or the cracked
version has managed, to max out the processor which can give
the impression of the PC freezing up.

What is that supposed to mean anyway? My software is up to
date, my hardware is far from ancient and certainly not
obscure. That should mean that XP is less compatible.
Therefore your post was pointless.

anyways, seeing how this thread has totally gone off
topic, i'd just like to ask again what are some decent shell
replacements for Windows XP.

I'd like something that is as customizable as LiteStep
is.......if at all possible.

what's your favorite replacement? :)

You were using a 'cracked' version of XP. 'cracked'
versions are often just developmental builds of the software
(even cracked versions on so called corporate licenses), as
such core optimisation won't have taken place, drivers are
often incomplete or could be missing altogether.

go ahead then

but the fact of the matter is that no version of Mac OS X
can run explorer (without the help of an application such as
WINE or DARWINE)

do you happen to know the version ranges of the development
versions of XP?

i'm curious to know if the one I have is a dev copy

my version is 5.1.2600

that's what the Commnd Prompt says anyways

yes i know it is

what i am stating is that you cannot run explorer.exe under
Mac OS X, which is what roygbivcore is claiming that you can
do

which you cannot, not without using a program like WINE or
DARWINE...and even then that's most likely using X11

Was your brothers laptop designed to run on WindowsXP or did
it originally ship with another operatig system?

Then if he was having problems he could have returned the
laptop and get them to send him a proper one. It could have
been a memory related thing there though, WinXP does require
more memory to run due to graphical requirements...but as I
previously mentioned Win2k couldn't really be used in a home
environment.
