DOOM3 alpha screenshots

i've just been looking at some of the screenshots from the
alpha version...for those who don't understand what the
difference between an alpha version and a beta version is,
read this:

A very early version of a software product that may not
contain all of the features that are planned for the final
version. Typically, software goes through two stages of
testing before it is considered finished. The first stage,
called alpha testing, is often performed only by users
within the organization developing the software. The second
stage, called beta testing , generally involves a limited
number of external users.

anways, back to my point.

i am SO looking forward to playing this game. After
seeing these screenshots, the offical screenshots and the
official trailer, I am really excited about this

in fact I don't know which i'm more excited about...

getting my powerbook soon, or actually being able to play
this game

it's been a long time coming

I'm looking forward to Half Life 2 much, MUCH more!

heheh

i fondly remember playing Wolfenstein 3D at my dad's house

unfortunately I got into these kind of games quite
late....you see, while i was living with my mom we didn't
have enough money for computers or stuff like that - we had
an Atari 2600.....that was it.

When I moved to my dad's in 1996 i was first introduced to
Wolfenstein 3D on my dad's 386....and then Heretic, Duke
Nukem 3D, and then DOOM

even though technically Duke3D is better, DOOM will
always be my favorite!

i wasted my school years playing first person shooters, and
i'm not gonna give up wasting the rest of my life playing
them!!

well i think this is highly illegal, but since this page
came up on google search, i guess it's obviously not THAT
bad

alpha screenies

and by illegal i mean they shouldn't even be posted on the
net....

id Software apparently made a HUGE deal about these
screenshots and the leaked alpha

Dunno, when the first shots came out I was like "wow!" And
now I'm more like "is that it?" The problem with these games
(DOOM3, HL2) is that they got their material out to the
press so friggin' early that everybody's become quite used
to 'em and worse, they're taking so long to bring out that
other games simply get away with their technical novelties
(the ragdoll stuff, the awesome and now standard
gravitystuff, the bumpmappingstuff special lighting fx etc.)
One of the original Half-Life's better points was the
awesome A.I. and I hope the next instalment will focus
heavily on that as well, I'm just hoping that the delays
mean longer game and more technical advancements cos I hate
great games that are so short they're finished in one
evening like Call of Duty and Max Payne 2.

On a similar note I played the demo from Far Cry, and I must
say that I was fairly underwhelmed by the A.I. that got so
raved about. I mean, when they got alerted they started
running back and forth like mental patients, when I was
sniping one he was looking at me from behind a rock, but
since he was looking at me he wouldn't need even half a
brain to figure out he was a target but he just stood there.
And at other times I was hiding in the brushes and some git
fires rockets from a boat but as he's only been alarmed by a
presence he wouldn't know where to shoot cos he cant see me
right? Wrong he fired deadeye on my left eyelid with those
babies whereever I went. I wouldn't call that great A.I.

now from what i see, it looks like a bunch of lab levels and
possibly some city levels. but lets be honest, it isnt DOOM
unless at some point you venture straight into hell with
dimlit caverns and huge beasts with impaled bodies

Farcry is incredible.

Great sleeper for me (holding out for HL2 and D3).

I fucking love it.

Bar none, incredible.

Just make sure you have the right hardware to play it.

Don't play it with shitty hardware and ruin the experience
;)

really? that's the bomb!!!!!

i never really got to use many of the user maps, because

1) at the time i didn't have a net connection

2) when i did, it wasn't fast enough

3) most of the user maps and TC's (as i understand it)
required the Atomic Edition or the Plutonium Pak and I only
had the standard version :(

4) Now I have a Mac, and I'm not too sure about TC's and
compatibility

5) Soon I'll be getting a Powerbook that isn't capable of
booting into OS 9.22 and there is now version of Duke3D for
Mac OS X yet

they shot it at some gameconference a year back.

my levels 'Stranded' and 'Hybrids X' were epic. they held
the number 1 ranking among the user maps sites for ages. i
make them so huge that it could very well take two hours to
beat.

1.5GHz G4
1GB DDR RAM
128MB ATI Radeon 9700 graphics

you mean make sure you spend about $3000 on a machine to run
it proper? Want to, but can't spend the money on that right
now :(
The jungle in Far Cry is the best I've ever seen in a game
so far.
Apparently it has a special optimizations patch for the
upcoming geforce 6800 ultra cards to make it look even more
lush 'n incredible.

9700 isn't going to be Near the hardware really ::wanted::
for this game.

Venturing that ... well.... now that I think about it; how
optimized it will be for the Macs.

Either way...it will be nice.

By the way, those alpha leak pics are from...well...long
long ago. There is no real point in looking at them. Low
res textures...unfinished art, unfinished maps, unfinished
characters...

There's more to come.

yeah. well i really hated those user maps that were lets say
a cavern level, or a lab level, or a building level. i
combined them all. sort of like ninja gaiden for xbox, i
would include caverns, hidden cities, secret underground
labs that were a bitch to find. some of my elevators took 2
minutes to reach the bottom at a fast speed, just to add the
the feeling of
"holy shit this is deep!"

well according to what i've read it should be capable of
running it (the graphics card anyways)

anyways, just as long as i get to play it, i don't care

i think its safe to say that it'll be fairly decently
optimized for Macs.......i read one of the major guys at id
(can't remember if it was John Carmack, Tim Willits, or Todd
Hollenshead) said that Mac OS X is the best developing
system they've used

i can't remember where i read it either, but of course
people are gonna reckon i'm making it up

but anyways, this isn't about macs, it's about DOOM3

and exactly - these ARE old screenies

there's been like a year or two since these were leaked

And just because it's easier to /dev/ on Mac, doesn't mean
the hardware is fully optimized.....drivers, anyone?

well since the fact that Apple make sure that the hardware
that goes into every machine works with the OS there isn't
gonna be a problem with drivers

as long as the card works with the OS, then the game will
support it.

same as with audio devices like External Audio Interfaces -
if OS X can see it and use it, Cubase, Logic, Reason,
whatever else you use will also see it

Yep ,I saw it on a presentation vid by Carmack, he was
ranting away about it being optimized for the Mac. Don't
understand that really as they've got a much wider audience
in PC's, where the franchise originated and should have been
developed for first and foremost and later ported to other
systems.
Anybody still wonder about Duke Nukem If Ever?

My comment wasn't about drivers working/not working, but
simply optimized for hardware and instruction set.

oh, well in that case there's no diffference

a graphics card will run the same on whatever platform it's
being used on, because it's the GPU that does the work, not
the CPU

being used on, because it's the GPU that does the work, not

the CPU

....No

You forget.

The operating system controls prioritizations of the
hardware buffers, also memory allocations, also drivers
(which are often most important);

Not to mention, the CPU still handles all of the shader
sillouttes that get pushed to the GPU for vertex/geo
processing and rendering stages.

I'm not trying to argue against Macs; Boy, do I find
disgust in such debates.

Just merely stateing.

There is also still lots of memory bandwidth allocations and
such that may be +/- in different computer architectures (pc
vs mac) ... risc and x86 etc....depending on the bus.

Wow, I thought Doom3 and HL2 would be out for a while by
now, (there goes any chance of hiding the fact that I'm a

being put though exhausting waiting times for their games to
be released. (most of the times though, it's generally worth
the wait)

HL2 was supposed to be out for a while by now, but a large
chunk of code got stolen from Valve, thereby halting the
whole progress.

Qrtr,

Th e theft of the code has really nothing to do with the
delay of the game.

As it was _proven_ in the code, the game was no where NEAR
completed, and even the E3 demo they showed that was
supposed to be fully "unscripted". .... turned out to have
scripted events.

Thus, Valve was a little bit.. up shit's creek if you know
what I mean.

They were pushing for a sept 28th release last year.

Cough....yeah fucking right.

lol that game was no where NEAR completed..

's true what you say about shaders.

One of my lecturers is trying to find a way of get surface
sub-division shaders processing off the CPU and onto the gfx
card (it'd make a huge leap in how smooth curves are in 3d).
