Telomeres in humans have been shown to consist of head to
tail repeats of the bases 5'TTAGGG running toward the end of
the chromosome. Furthermore, there is a characteristic
pattern of the base pairs in what is called the
pre-telomeric region, the region just before the telomere.
When the vicinity of chromosome 2 where the fusion is
expected to occur (based on comparison to chimp chromosomes
2p and 2q) is examined, we see first sequences that are
characteristic of the pre-telomeric region, then a section
of telomeric sequences, and then another section of
pre-telomeric sequences. Furthermore, in the telomeric
section, it is observed that there is a point where instead
of being arranged head to tail, the telomeric repeats
suddenly reverse direction - becoming (CCCTAA)3' instead of
5'(TTAGGG), and the second pre-telomeric section is also the
reverse of the first telomeric section. This pattern is
precisely as predicted by a telomere to telomere fusion of
the chimpanzee (ancestor) 2p and 2q chromosomes, and in
precisely the expected location.Telomeres in humans have

Mitochondria do not contain anywhere near the amount of DNA
needed to code for all mitochondria-specific proteins,
however, a billion or so years of evolution could account
for a progressive loss of independence. The endosymbiotic
hypothesis might be called a theory, but experimental
evidence can't be provided to test it. Only circumstantial
evidence is available in support of the proposal, which is
the most likely explanation for the origin of mitochondria.
The evidence needed to change the model from hypothesis to
theory is likely forever lost in antiquity.

Sigourney Weaver made the behind-the-back half-court
basketball shot successfully after two weeks of basketball
practice, tutored by a basketball coach. Her conversion rate
during that two weeks was about one shot in from every six.
When the day came to shoot the scene, director Jean-Pierre
Jeunet wanted to have the ball dropped in from above, rather
than wait for Weaver to sink the shot herself, which "would
probably take about 200 takes". Weaver insisted that the she
could get the shot in herself, which she was finally allowed
to do. She sunk the shot on the very first take, even though
she was six feet further past the three-point line. Ron
Perlman was completely stunned (and thoroughly impressed),
and turned directly at the camera and broke character,
saying, "Oh my God!" The editors looked at the shot and
decided that there was "enough room to get the scissors in".
Weaver was excited about making the shot, but Jeunet was
concerned that audiences would believe the shot to be faked
due to the ball leaving the frame. Upon Weaver's insistence,
he kept the shot as it was. Weaver described the miracle
shot as "one of the best moments in her life", after her
wedding day and the birth of her daughter, of course.

The social amoebas, or Dictyostelia, are a group of
organisms that hover on the borderline between uni- and
multicellularity. Each organism starts its life as a
unicellular amoeba, but they aggregate to form a
multicellular fruiting body when starved. This process has
been best described for the model organism Dictyostelium
discoideum. The aggregate of up to 100,000 D. discoideum
cells first transforms into a finger-shaped structure, the
"slug." The head region of the slug senses environmental
stimuli such as temperature and light and directs the slug
toward the soil's outer surface, where spores will be
readily dispersed. The slug then stands up to form the
fruiting body, or sorocarp. The cells in the head region
move into a prefabricated cellulose tube and differentiate
into stalk cells that ultimately die. The remaining "body"
cells then crawl up the stalk and encapsulate to form
spores. Thus, the Dictyostelia display distinct
characteristics of true multicellularity, such as cell-cell
signaling, cellular specialization, coherent cell movement,
programmed cell death, and altruism (1, 2).

The earlier Venera probes consisted of the main spacecraft
– the “bus” – which carried a landing capsule. The
landing capsule would do its job at Venus, with the bus
relaying information back to Earth. When the landing capsule
failed, the bus was redundant. It either flew on past Venus
or followed the landing capsule into the atmosphere where it
would be crushed.
When the technology became available, the Soviet space
agency decided to do something useful with the bus craft.
And so, it was decided, the bus craft for Veneras 9 and 10
would not simply sail on past Venus and be forgotten –
they would be inserted into an orbit around Venus. They
became the first satellites of Venus – natural or
artificial. The same was done with Veneras 13 and 14. These
orbiters would carry cameras as well as other instruments to
study the Venusian clouds over long periods.
Veneras 15 and 16 were a different story – the last two
craft in the Venera series, they carried no lander and were
purely designed as orbiters. Their job was to map the
