Why do people say this in America to show that they don't care about something? It doesn't make sense. In England people say "I couldn't care less", meaning that the level of care they have for something is at its lowest. It couldn't be any lower.
But to say "I could care less" is stupid. It could mean that you care about it a lot.
Can anyone shed any light on this controversial matter? It is something that has troubled me for many years. Am I missing the point? Guys?

It means that while they don't care much they are polite enough to care enough so it would be possible to care less.
The English not being so polite don't give this option.

Yeah but it doesn't show how much they care. Let's say the level of care is on a scale of 1-100. "I couldn't care less" means 1. "I could care less" could be anything from 2 to 100.
What a stupid country.

Most Americans have difficulty in quantative measurement, which is why most of them are fat fuckers who can't stand up without wheezing. So they have to speak in general terms.

I don't think it's because they're more polite, the British are notorious for being less outspoken than their American counterparts. I think it's basically because they're fucking stupid.

figures of speech mostly work in extremes so as to make a point quickly, not to keep possibilities open.

Using 'could care less' is almost a protective way of expressing a lack of caring so you don't end up contradicting yourself in the future.
You know.. i'm sure this has been thought through.

American (and Canadian to a slightly lesser extent) English screws up sayings/terms like this a lot.
One of my pet hates is: "...and such." This is only correct in a very few cases, in most it should be:
"and such like." It's poor/outdated English anyway, but at least the latter is more often correct.
Another one which is sadly cropping up in the UK more and more is:
"same difference" Aside from being used in literally scores of situations where it is incorrect (both logically as well as grammatically), the correct use is, "it is the same difference".
As an example, a situation where it would be appropriate would be where three entities are being compared and two are different from the third in the same manner.

Poor grammar and spelling in formal writing (everyone is slipshod when it comes to MBs) usually indicates a flawed, derranged mind. Example:
"Q-You mean you want to have sex with robots? Why? A-Well, many of us fantasize about such things, but as many newsgroups will state, there's a difference between imagining about something and actually doing it.
As for "why," to quote the breakfast cereal commercial, "we just do." We find the look, the movement and the sound of the mechanical body attractive. It's no different than liking people that wear a certain type of clothes, of hairstyle.""
No you deviant, it is different. It's different from (unless you're from New Zealand or Australia, then "different to" is normal, albeit still incorrect) :P

"I could care less" is definately stupid, I don't know how it came into everyday speech for some people but it shouldn't have.
However, statements like "Also, I put things inside my ass and walk around the street shaking hands with people." Are not funny at all. I'm not quite sure if you thought they would be, but really it just makes you look like a pretentious cumbag.
