The hole in the elephants bottom
I wanted to be on the stage, And now my ambitions I've gottem! In my grey pantaloons I'm the rage I'm the hole in the elephant's bottom!
My friends all think I'm a wit, In their seats in the stalls I can spot 'em! And I wink at the girls in the pit Through the hole in the elephant's bottom!
(Sad verse - if you have tears, prepare to shed them now)
Last night I had some ba d luck, The manager said I was rotten! Cos I happened to get my head stuck Through the hole in the elephant's bottom!
My part it is not very large, But nor is it easy forgotten. If you're looking for me come and look Through the hole in the elephant's bottom!

It's not an attempt to oppress women- it has been convention for centuries- long before (what we would consider) even basic psychology was formed, let alone ideas of the subconcious and suggestion.
It's exactly the same as "man" being used as an abbreviation of mankind (or "humans"). When Neil Armstrong said "...for man" it meant for mankind, not just males :)
I agree that in business, "Dear Sir" (which used to be the convention before "Dear Sir or Madam") may of been slightly offensive when comparatively few women were in business.

All political correctness is bullshit, normally started by middle class women who seem to forget that the only reason they are here in the first place was because God stole one of Adams ribs to make them. And women have been on the take over since.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure "woman" comes from the Hebrew for "of Man" (for the reason you mentioned). Hence "Man" refers to both male and female in certain contexts.
With regard to WMW, I agree that there are times when for clarities sake there is a need to specify that by "man" or "he" you are refering to people, particularly in instances where most people would assume you meant a male. For example, in literature about the armed forces, saying "he" may mislead people to think that no women perform that role (this distinction needs to be made as in some cases women are not permitted to perform certain duties or join certain units). In cases such as this, putting something like, "(although, the soldier may be female)" after the first occurence of "he" will suffice to clear it up. Putting it after every single instance of "he" insults your readers intelligence and makes it look like you think they have the attention span of goldfish. ;)

Yes that is right...the Hebrews knew that they are all theiving sluts and deserve to be treated like shit. They belong to us and yet they seem to think their opinion matters.
cooking, cleaning and fucking...all a woman needs to know, and they can't even seem to get that into there heads.
WOMEN NEED TO BE SHOWN THEIR PLACE
I think I have caught Monoid.

I know Brits who say I could care less, and Americans who say I couldn't care less. I also know people who will try and suggest that I could care less is the correct phrase, even though it's obviously a bastardised version of the real one.
Aluminium/aluminum is the most retarded argument, because we spell it differently.

it's a retarded argument because there is only one way to spell it and pronounce it... on the periodic table of elements it is aluminUM. there is no extra I, nor should one be pronounced in there.

Can the French throw some light on this? That international "SI Units" place is in France and I imagine their spelling is the "correct" one.

It's "aluminium", then. Well, at least, it's the common spelling.

I'm not sure what the SI units place has to do with it (unless they are in charge of the table of elements too, which I did not previously know if that is indeed the case), but this situation really isn't worthy of an argument so I'll just be content my way and let the French have their fun. :)

It's relevant because I imagine the SI people probably produce the "official" periodic table :)
