get rid of the cowbell, and do some better drumprogramming -
rhythms with a flowing feel wouldn?t hurt, I think....

please could you elaborate on "better drum programming"?

i thought i was doing okay with that...i guess not then

thanks for your feedback :)

I've never seen you comment on any one elses tracks (or I
just don't remember it)

Anyway here goes...

The track sounds far to basic. Synth you have used sound
too clean, generic and boring. The drum programming in the
more complex parts just sounds like a semi random series of
hits without any groove or flow repeatedly looped.

The track just doesn't hang well together, the transitions
seems forced and awkward.

Could do with a fair bit more work :P

i haven't commented on anyone elses tracks, because up until
now i've been on a local call rate dialup, and my mom would
have killed me if i'd have spent ages on the phone
downloading music.....but now i have 1mb broadband, so i can
start downloading :)

well, i guess i shouldn't upload or do anymore tracks
then......i don't wanna embaress myself anymore than i
already have.

thanks for your feedback :)

ANYONE WHO HAS ONLY JUST LOOOKED AT THIS THREAD - PLEASE DO
NOT DOWNLOAD MY TRACK

you'll only be unnecessarily eating up bandwidth that you
could be using to get something good

:)

thank you everyone for your input on my stuff, you've been
very helpful

i won't be posting anymore threads to do with my music.....i
won't be making any more music for that matter (i guess if
you could call it music)

thanks again guys :)

You haven't embaressed yourself at all...it wasn't all that
bad, it's all down to personal opinion. If you keep working
on it you get better (your track is a lot better than most
of the stuff I have posted in the past)...I was just being
honest and to the point is all. I could have tried to dress
it up in a nicer way but it doesn't help you any extra.

As long as you keep posting I will keep commenting if you
want comments, I'll just keep being honest :D

very much of the music on this board is over-quantized. it
sounds like you've calculated the position of every sound
too much.

also: the cow-bell.. hikaru no-go.

the drum loop is too short, and too little variation in.

yeah i know, i wasn't trying to sound like.......well, you
know trying to get sympathy or anything (am i making
sense?)

i just mean that i know if i want an honest, unclouded
opinion i can always count on the guys here at xltronic, and
i'm glad that i've gotten all the feedback i have from this

i mean, i know it's only a couple of feedbacks, but its
enough to tell me that maybe i'm just not cut out for making
music.

i would have hoped that it would be the other way round,
because ever since i was 14 all i've wanted to do was create
something, but for some people it's just not meant to be,
right?

you're right - dressing things up doesn't help anyone, and i
would have looed like a right fucking loser if i'd have
tried to send this stuff off to a label or something, so i'm
very grateful for your feedback, and everyone elses

:)

As I said your stuff is better than a lot of the stuff I
have posted, and a lot of the stuff that has been posted by
other people. It certainly isn't the worst.

My personal opinion on how to improve is to keep practising,
you can't just pick a guitar up and play it, and making
electronic music is potentially a lot more complex because
you have to master the software, how the synths sound,
different effects etc.

A lot of techniques you will pick up by listening to other
peoples tracks, odd as it sounds some really good techniques
are replicated by amature producers and it is a lot easier
to figure out how it has been acheived than in an Aphex
track or whatever. Also you can begin to hear where you
feel other people have gone wrong and it allows you to not
make the same mistake in your own tracks.

My advice would be if you like it and enjoy doing it fuck
everyone elses opinion. :P

you probably shouldn't stop making music. you should just
keep making it and eventually you'll evolve, as will your
music.

the first songs I made were shit! lasted 17,5 beats and 22
mins. Random synth "plokk" sounds and drums which sounded
like a dead camel humping a ceramic bowl filled with dung.

don't be sorry like that all the time, you're victimising
yourself from the start...

i can't listen to your track now, but even if it's the
shittest thing i'll ever heard you don't have to stop making
tracks because of that, how long have you been making music?
certainly not long enough to be sure you're not cut for
it...

perseverance is the key in many domain but in music it is
maybe the most needed quality if you're not born with some
kind of talent.

A friend of mine gave me a tape of his music. It was 45
minutes of the same beat repeated with no variation through
the headphone socket from Fruityloops, and he asked for my
honest opinion on it.

Three days later as I threw soil in on top of his coffin I
swore I would never be that honest again.

>ecnadniarb

i get what you're saying, and i really appreciate your
advise, but the thing is....i thought i was good...i
thought, and friends of mine thought that I knew stuff like
Reason pretty well.

the thing tome with making music is this:

yeah it's all well and good making music for ME, you know,
what i make i love etc etc etc. But I wanna be recognised as
an artist, because music over the past few years has not
really been thought of as an artform (imo) and it really
means a lot to me to be able to do a track and have the
audience it's intended for (listeners of
braindance/electronica/idm/whatever the fuck you wanna call
it) and if my target audience doesn't really think it's up
to scratch, then that's telling me something, right?

i've been messing with music since i was 15....i'm 20 now, i
would have thought i'd have gathered enough skill to
actually do something that's decent......i NEEDED this man,
i needed this wake-up call

i really do appreciate your help on this, i only hope that
someday i can help you or someone else on this board as much
as everyone else on here has helped me

>drunken mastah

i have a mate who used to do stuff in ReBirth that was 999
bars long

heh

it was funny as hell :)

why dont u try posting ur link to zeebox up here so they can

u seem to do music to suit more than one genre
in my opinion, this track is extremely different to what you
normally do and i like it but thats my opinion, however
perhaps if the guys got a feel for other stuff u did they
might be able to aid you in the making of this song..?

i've deleted everything from my zebox site, so there's no

so my opinion as an artist dont count..?
i might only be starting up but i do have a good idea of
whats decent and whats not and if i dont like something
you've done i'd tell you...

For example, i think that Tirade is one of the best songs
you have ever done, secondly i think gotham was amazing too

I agree with you when it comes to the drums in ruined, they
weren't big enough HOWEVER that gave me a totaly different
feel to the song, which again, i liked!

I know what i'm talkign about and i dissagree with you when
you say i dont count

am i right in thinking this is the only track you've shown
to the public (and therefore the only track you've had

loads of other tracks that people wud like / like elements
of...

you've only heard the opinion of a handful of people here
and have already decided ur not an artist or whatever...
this is wrong... keep fighting! keep making music an upload

people
his friends
people in college
my friends, me
people in my college
my family..

you guys are really the only ones who he's had major
critisism off

Oscillik this is a new genre for you, its going to take a
few tried before you hit the nail on the spot ok?
you're not going to be able to create an absolutely perfect
track in a totaly new genre to you with your first song...
its going to take a few tries and i'm going to help you all
the way

obviousely i cant do it for you because you know shit loads
more than me, but i mean i'll support you emotionally
you're an amazing artist and you KNOW you are!

you wouldn't be shelling out so much money for equipment if
you thought you'd give up at the first sign of critisism...

not EVERYONE is going to like everything.. and remember what
we were saying the other night? with EVERY artist no matter
how big a fan you are, there will always be one or two
tracks that dont quite fit your fancy..

you just keep making it, and it will fall into place. you
can't base your entire life upon the first thing someone
says about your work. you could probably also be pretty good
at rose-painting dinner-plates if you did it for a while.

what i've noticed is that, after a while of making music, I
get closer and closer to making jazz.. even though the first
songs i made were.. strange tracker-techno with "the sound
of a thousand iron monkeys riding through my brain on iron
donkeys".. so.. as you progress in making music, you will
get closer and closer to the music you were supposed to
make.

albertoBalsalm is right...

unfortunately u have to be a hard bastard with this...

of course its devastating when people slag off something you
have worked hard for and thought was brilliant... its the
same when you send off a demo and no-one replies.... its a
little slap in the face....

no wonder aphex etc dont like coming to these message
boards, there's always people slagging off particular tracks
etc , it would get me vexed.

i AM taking criticism

have you not read my posts?

i wanted constructive feedback. i GOT constructive
feedback.

the feedback said that the track is too simple, beats feel
forced, cowbell cliche, melody isn't fluid enough.

all the things that i thought were right weren't right at
all. they were wrong.

and if someone who thought they were doing things right, if
they thought that their stuff sounded great, and then they
find out that actually it's not that great, in fact it's too
cliched, or too simple, then as an "artist" with integrity i
have to know when to bow out

and i'm bowing out

there's nothing wrong with that is there?

i'm just trying to keep some kind of integrity as an
artist.

i wouldn't want an artist like Reznor, or James to spout out
shit just because they feel lazy or have turned commercial
or whatever - I'd expect them to bow out if they felt that
they've reached their creative peak and couldn't push the
envelope anymore.

think you need more practise
not everyone is born with Aphex twin's gift ok
i think you're amazing and thats coming from both a
girlfriend and an artists point of view and everyone in my
family and at college love you too
you need to open your eyes and see that if every artists
stopped making music cuz a handfull of people didnt like 1
song, we'd have NO MUSIC in the world!

Trent would have stopped making music cuz u and me didnt
like a few of his songs..

Bowie would have committed suicide cuz u hate lots of his
stuff!!
oh and britney spears, well lets just not go into that
i admire you
