when asked about singing on his own songs:
"I'm quite into my voice actually.. but um, I'm into like spectrally extracting like famous people's voices and mapping them into mine. you know, you get this like weird mutation voice.. you get mine, then like someone really recognizable. it sounds.. good."
the second part is vocoding.. or something similar.. I've heard of 'spectral' effects.. spectral delay etc.. but what, exactly, does that mean? and what would spectral extraction be? huh??

Spectral/spectrum, these words describe the splitting up of a signal (usually light) into its component bands or wavelengths.
I would guess that he is using some sort of program to analyse his voice pattern, split it up into its component parts (what ever they may be) and then substitute those parts for other peoples voice spectrum's that he has ripped/stolen/whatever.
This is just a guess and is possibly completely wrong :)

1) He loves lying to make the process of doing interviews more entertaining for himself.
2) It's highly technical- few people would immediately spot he's spouting bollocks and would think he really had made some breakthrough in the area of vocoder/spectral synthesis technology. Not saying he hasn't- just that it's unlikely.
3) He doesn't excatly have a great track record of telling the truth in interviews now, does he?

he wasn't lying when he said that.. don't be rediculous. I have this particular interview as a quicktime video.. he's not playing cute little games with the interviewer by saying that he has like a full double album with tina turner somewhere in his apartment that he can't be 'arsed' to put out..

Spectral extraction is where you hire a specially trained ghost to literally 'suck' the audio, leaving you with a positively ghoulified sound. It has also been known as Ghostipulation. For more information contact Janine Melnitz.

b) Using a personal term for it
c) Customised software

Steinberg Freefilter
It's an "intelligent" spectral annalyser with a built in EQ..
So you can play a sample of someone else singing - It'll "learn" their frequencies - Then it'll annalyse your singing - "learn" your frequencies - Then you can cross fade how much you want your voice (or track or whatever) to morph into there's - Just in terms of tone really.
I've used it in mastering before - Doing this punk band - Couldn't be bothered to sit around and EQ each track from scratch - So I got Freefilter to automatically get every track to mimick the tone of a Green Day record (that was really well produced), so I'd have less work to do later on...
Never do things like that nowadays though.
But yeah - I could easily get myself singing with the exact tone of Marvin Gaye or someone.
