SERENITY (Joss Whedon) - 5/5

One of the rare sci-fi films that succeeds on almost every
level. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun at
the cinema. I really hope its a success so they can make
more movies. I urge anyone here to see this if you can,
wether you like sci-fi or not.

A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (David Cronenberg) 4.7/5

Return to form for Cronenberg, cast is superb... the action
is some of the most realistic i've seen.

next to see:

Broken Flowers (Jim Jarmusch)

a love song for bobby long - 1/5 - predictable, cliched, a
waste of celluloid. scarlet johansson is nice to look at.

the jacket - 2/5 - almost as cliched, but not as
predictable. keira knightly is nice to look at.

even cowgirls get the blues - 1/5 - an awful adaptation of a
nearly unadaptable novel that im told is quite excellent (im
only in the middle of my first tom robbins novel). horribly
disjointed.

i'm sure i've mentioned a couple of these before in here,
but i'm going to throw all the miyazaki/studio ghibli movies
that i've recently seen here in one post. i bought a bootleg
dvd collection off ebay (i swear it looked real. i guess i
should of done research beforehand because now i feel guilty
about it) of 12 studio ghibli movies and a music video.
they're all spoken in japanese and subtitled in english...

nausicaa of the valley of the wind - 8.5 / 10
only yesterday - 7 / 10
princess mononoke - 8.5 / 10
whisper of the heart - 8 / 10
pom poko (the raccoon war) - 9 / 10
my neighbor totoro - 8 / 10
porco rosso (the crimson pig) - 7 / 10
kiki's delivery service - 7 / 10
laputa: castle in the sky - 8 / 10
grave of the fireflies - 9 / 10
spirited away - 9.5 / 10
ocean waves - 7 / 10

with miyazaki movies, i tend to enjoy the fantasy aspect.
even the stories that were more based in reality and lacked
any fantasy aspect, still were a treat to watch. interesting
stories, good story telling, and beautiful drawings all
contribute to this. a lot of these may be driven towards
children. i'm 21 and i really don't care. they're awesome.

ok i'm done now.

Frankenstein 1/5

I'm referring to the new one produced by Martin Scorcese. It
didn't end. It just abruptly went to credits once the whole
game plan and storyline got underway. Maybe a sequal is
coming I don't know.

What struck me most was the obvious szamar madar violin song
during the ballet scene. What a sampler...

come on, you're just being ultra-rebel when you give Old Boy
1/5. I mean, I definitely can agree that it doesn't
necessarily deserve its place in the IMDB top 250 at #108, or its "Grand Prix" at Cannes headed
by a Tarantino's jury, but come on - it's not such a bad
film at all. Not the director's best, but considering his
high standards, that doesn't make it too shabby at all.

As far as Park Chan-wook's films go, I'd rate them as
follows (the ones I've seen):

- Old Boy 3½/5
- JSA 4/5
- Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance 4½/5
- "Cut" (from Three Extremes) 4/5

... I fully expect Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (2005) to hit
the jackpot as well, and from the reviews it seems likely.

oh, and what the heck, here's my long-winded review for
"SAW" (copy-pasted from elsewhere):
--
I saw SAW today (is there any way of saying this without
sounding humorous?).

I have to admit it gave me a bit of a thrill!

But I'm oscillating between low-end and high-end
appraisal... So I'm gonna lay out the pros and the cons
here:

*minor SPOILER alert!*

PROS: (which would lean towards 8/10)

- good cinematography and editing, emphasising just the
right amount of tension between the scenes. The story was
carried through admirably.

- nice settings! I especially enjoyed the sideline torture
rooms and the weird machinery, but the main room was dire
enough as well.

- enough plot twists to keep it interesting, and to keep
viewers guessing. I liked the idea that really no-one's
innocent (except for the young sweet daughter, of course. Of
course.)

- jolly gorefest towards the end! I admit: I enjoy blood.

CONS: (which would lean towards 5/10)

- Some of the dialogue (in fact: MOST of the dialogue) was
totally unbelievable, clichéd, predictable, unnatural,
unreasonable and unintentionally comical. A film of this
caliber should not try to act so serious when it has the
appearance of a veritable B-film. I cringed often; and not
because of the blood, but because of the lines.

- Some of the horror elements were so useless and tiring:
The bad guy in a mask -theme, the sub-bass voice recording
(ooh, spooky!), the videotape+phone+monitor("reality
TV")+electroshock cadgetry (borrowed, to name some, from
J-horror), the ridiculous dolls (even Chuck used to be more
scary!) etc etc...

- Danny Glover as the cop was believable early on in the
story, but towards the end he was painted as a caricatured
loner ("I think you gotta get yourself a girlfriend"!!),
obsessed about a killer, slightly insane, yet ready to risk
his life for innocent victims. His role is never fully layed
out, he just whimpers away.

... CONTINUED!

offline BoxBob-K23 from Finland on 2005-11-20 06:39 [#01782914]
Points: 2440 Status: Regular

"SAW" CONTINUED (2/2):

(CONS continued...)

- Is it just me, or can't the good "doctor" act?? I know
it's partially the crappy dialogue, but this Cary Elwes
(whose notable roles include "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" and
"Liar Liar") simply made the role of the anguished father
seem like not such a big deal. His expressions of hatred,
fear, desperation and sorrow look really forced and faked.
It wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the fact that
he's the main character.

- Oh, and did I mention the goddamn dolls?

...

Overall, I'd say 6 or 7 out of 10. You might say it's got a
lot of "camp" in it to make it highly recommendable (I admit
I thoroughly enjoyed, for example, Cubes 1 and 2 - the third
one was camel dung!). But the dialogue was such rubbish.
Honestly. And those godawful dolls.

Okay, I'll give it 7/10, mainly for the riveting ending and
some great visuals. (Make that 3/5)
