business-man or artist?...as bill hicks said 'you do a
commercial your off the artisitc list FOREVER'...i honestly
don't care if i hate that artist 's music but when i hear
music that means something to me it cheapens everything and
i cry a little in a corner.. what do you people think?

It seems pretty hard to keep your artistic virginity
forever. If someone said "I'll give you 10k if we can use 30
seconds of a song you already wrote" I'm sure you would hike
up your IDM skirt.

I remember when the butthole surfers did a bunch of Super
Nintendo Commercials. I thought that was way cool. And that
new swiffer commercial with DEVO is cool in my books too.

I think "selling out" but too something fans will enjoy is
alright. If they started to give away Atari Teenage Riot
toys in happy meals I wouldn't hold it against Alec Empire :
)

I might be wrong, but doesn't a label sometimes license a
track for a commercial and the artist has no control over
it?

A couple of tracks off drukqs have been ruined for me by
being in adverts. People often say that you don't like it
because it means it's no longer "underground" but that's not
it at all... it's just that sometimes you have images
associated with the music and the adverts wipes them out.

Yes, there are some good examples- adozenaday by
brothomstates featuring on the sprite commercial was great.

Yeah meng, if it's in the interest of fans I don't consider
it selling out.

i see selling out allot these days, justin timberlake
singing one line in a mcdonalds commercial, britney spears
becoming the head of pepsi, and random sports stars
promoting thirst quenching sports drinks which arent healthy
in the least. so when i see some IDM artsits music in some
commercial or advert, its really just a leave in the wind
compared to what i think "selling out" really is.

With the major labels it's pretty much par for the course
that once you sign a deal you're signing away all your
rights to how your music is used. The smaller the label, the
more likely you are to have a more flexible deal, or if
you;re a big act like Radiohead you can retain a measure of
control simply because you're big enough to.

As Bill Hicks also said, in comment about "rock stars" doing
commercials, 'if you're a struggling artist, I'll look the
other way'.

That's about wright, I reckon. Give them the benefit of the
doubt. They're probably not in the position where they can
negotiate how their music is exploited by record companies.
And they're probably skint too, so a few quid and a bit of
recogntion wouldn't go a miss.

It's the likes of the Madonnas, Jackos and Britney Spears
of the world who are already fabulously wealthy and famous
and powerful enough to shape their careers who are the
cunts. Do they really need that extra few million that comes
by hawking fucking Coke? S'pose when you are as successful
as these people, you become a brand in itself and music is
just part of the company portfolio? Dunno, really.

Similar note: It was nice to see England rugby "hero", Jonny
Wilkinson turn down £1million to feature in Hello magazine.
Still some people around not willing to merchandise their
asses to the hilt.

That was my thought exactly- wind up Alec action figure
screams anti establishment slogans whilst emitting bleeps
and whirs :D

What do you folks thing of music in games- I just mentioned
it in Titsworth's show thread, but it warrants a post here
to?

For some reason I actually like it a lot more than in
adverts. I actually bought the new adam freeland album
because I liked one track off it that in Rez. On the one
hand the introduction of cds in consoles meant some really
cheap, poor music in games, but when it's used for licensed
stuff and it's actually good stuff (not the dad rock of GT
games for example!) it's fantastic.

Bill Hicks obviously didn't understand the following
principle:

that if you're skint and trying to become an artist and you
would like to buy more gear to achieve your artistic dreams,
and you'd like to give up your day-job at WAL-MART so that
you can spend more time crafting your ideas and doing what
God put you on this planet to do, rather than stacking
shelves, then of course you're going to accept an offer of
money for your music.

I appreciate that music can lose its magic when associated
with Pirelli Tyres or whatever, but the simple point
remains: with money comes empowerment, and with empowerment
comes the freedom to do whatever the fuck you want.

help perpetuate this shallow plastic piece of shit society,
you are a nothing.

no, no, no,

about? If seeing a commersial cheapens the music for you, you
are too concerned with that musics image (and you might be
suffering from "elitism").

wow... what a touchy thread to post on before i pass out...

well i suppose i have the following to contribute-

i'm firmly against artists whoring out their music, but it
has to be understood that a lot of times they really don't
have control over it, sometimes it's their fault because
they didn't read the contracts all the way through, other
times, labels higher slick lawyers who will make it seem
like they signed something they didn't

but all this doesn't matter
if you remember
that most people who make music, want to make money off it,
and though you usually won't keep making money off the same
album for 40 years, wether or not it's nostalgic to someone,
mcdonalds can.

and if you're used to limosines and free pussy, all of a
sudden that moral fiber starts going where all fiber goes to
in the end

and yeah, i'm definately pasionately against listening to
certain songs because i've seen them in adds for cat food,
dog food, and even worse, fast food

but the answer to my personal dillemma turned out to be
easier than anything i could possibly do to force these
companies to stop abusing music that i love

i stopped watching television, and listening to the radio.
fuckin' simple- now i don't get the association
good night!

I don't think it's a case of elitism it is more a case of if
you are willing to let your morals be bought,i personally
would never let my music be heard on any advertising.

If you want to hear loving crafted music on a shampoo advert
then fine but i won't be able to think of it the music same
way, i lost alot of my respect for aphex since he used one
of his best ever tunes on a fucking merc advert.

Personally i'm not willing to let my morals be bought,
everybody seems to be and that's what i hate about money,
for the right price you can buy anyone's morals.

C'mon marlowe. If some company I hated offered me a
gratuitous sum of money for a song (mind you: a song that I

there's not a music maker on this board who would turn down
a large sum of money if he/she got an email from X company
saying they wanted to use a track of yours. It's like free
cash. You've made the track anyway, and now someone wants
to give you money for it. It's a simple thing and it happens
all the time. It's not selling out. It's making a living.
