Rephlex are releasing a 4 x 10 inch vinyl set of works by the bbc radiophonic workshop just in time for Christmas.!
The 4 x ten inch vinyl version we are releasing features the members’ work given roughly a side per member – except Delia Derbyshire – perhaps the most celebrated of all the members who gets a whole record to herself for the first time ever.
It brings together tracks from the recently released radiophonic 1 and 2 cd's .
Promos for this release will be very scarce as the record itself will be limited - and the tracks are avaliable on the forementioned cd's.
However the music on the release has been extremley important and influential to the history of British music and popular culture.
The composers on the release are among the first people to take avant guarde principals and techniques and create music
that reached and fascinated millions via television and radio.
There has been a great deal of interest in the radiophonic workshop recently and especially one of it's greatest composers Delia Derbyshire from last years "Blue Veil's and Golden sands" play on radio 4 to the recent documentary on the organisation. The brilliance of the music on this release makes it obvious why.

Phobiazero: Where did you hear about this? I would like to know more and see if I can get hold o f a copy of it.
I work in the department that once was the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. I got there after it was shut down, but I work with people who did know it as it was. There seems to be lots of history that has been disgaurded and lost.
The composers that worked there never got the credit that they deserved. So I am very pleased to see this release on rephlex of all labels.
Bob Mcbob: No Dr Who. Delia Derbyshire composed that.
Jaysuz Jones: no Stockhausen, Carlos or Glass. They are great contemporary composers who had nothing to do with the workshop. The workshop consisted of people such as Delia Derbyshire, John Baker, David Cain and a few others, who you have most likley never heard of becasue their music was only rarely released other than as tv program backing music. They also tended to release under the joint name of "BBC radiophonic workshop" rather than their original names.

well music from oscilators and tape loops is electronic music!
pre computers though.
they had tape loops running down corridors and across multiple machines.
they had lots of machines running in sync. They did everything they could to play with sampled sounds, in the same "Music Concrete" style as IRCAM and GRM in France.
But their music always ended up sounding a bit different. Usually very spooky, and characterised old tv sci-fi and also Schools programs.
I dont think its the first time their music has been released in recent times though. Im pretty sure that there is already one cd released. Not sure who by though.

They only have the Dr. Who theme renditions which are more modern, actually composed by someone who graduated from Keele University.

nac....They were a good of musicians/technicians employed by the BBC to create sound effects & theme tunes....
All done with tape, very very early synths etc....
A MAJOR influence on UK techno...
Check out my blog for a few choice links to articles about the same (I do sometimes wonder if Rephlex are mind-readers you know...)...

If you get a chance, and seeing as the BBC are going to make all their stuff OPEN in very near future, then the documentary is priceless viewing...
If I can I'll see if I can a get a DivX or something...(there may well be one out their anyway seeing how relevant the program was to IDM/Electronic music fans...)...
BTW THE BBC RW is just a little akin to the Film Boards of Canada .... similar sort of setup (...I'm not talking the band here, just where they got their name from...)...

The saddest thing I found is how with the introduction of the Moog, the whole place seemed to become lost artistically...
I guess limitations are one of the keys to great art...(we only need think of the very early AFX stuff to release the truth in this...)...
hehe...I getting all arty-farty now...:)...

It's already in their charter, earth....All their output is avaiable already, but if you have to visit them, or write away...
This recent development is just making use of the BB and recent tech....
We all own the BBC already...and I'm no great fan of the UK but this is surely one thing we've got to be proud of....
Fuck Murdoch...this is how media should operate....
