I'm a socialist at heart, earth....you'll probably seldom met anyone less fascist than me...
We're talking 2 quid a week here....and even if you don't watch it a huge amount, it's culturally healthy for the entire country...
I don't drive...yet I'm sure my taxes go towards the roads etc...Do I resent this?...
Here's a little experiment for ya...ask a non-brit what's it like watching a programme that uninterruppted by those oh so nice BUYBUYBUYME breaks; so many I've mentioned this to seem agasp it's possible...
Oh yeah, how about the Radio channels?...
BTW The Govt & the BBC are seperate; as the recent spat re: Dr Kelly shows...
Sorry to sound so political &, I guess, dogmatic; but the BBC is worth sticking up for i feel....

i guess you realized i was pulling your leg somewhat.. :)
BUT...
does car tax pays for roads? the bbc does have adverts... for the bbc - after every programme. at least itv ads are varied!
but i'm against the way the bbc is forced upon us and i'm conscious of the way it is manipulated to suit the needs of blair et al. i'm also uncomfortable about how much it COULD be used as a propaganda tool in given circumstances, although i'd be quite happy to have the 5 minutes of hate with images of twatty howard on screen ;)

..yeah sorry...it's been a long day; my chemistry gets fucked come Thursday...
:)...
I do disagree it's forced on us tho...it seems a real small price to pay for the quality of the programmes they create; many of which wouldn't stand a chance on the smaller, indie channel or bigbig media mogul controlled channels...

the nice people at rephlex sent me a copy today...
...took it into one of the studios that it would have originally been recorded in, and blasted it out infront of a groupd of confused and scared staff (its pretty strange stuff)
no doctor who theme on it though!

I'm with jand, BBC is generally great, fuck it, its basically a one off, I think it usually gets it right, itv, sky, c 4 etc are shite.

I must say, I'm only half-English and I have lived in the Netherlands all of my life, but I do think the BBC does great work.
well, mostly BBC 2. BBC 1 does seem to be filled with mostly mediocre shite.

Yep, BBC2 introduced me to so many parts of culture & science, probably moreso that going to school itself; BBC1 has it's moments, but it is more mainstream...
We get BBC3 & BBC4 as well, and they have some cool intelligent programs on there...
If you wanna an example of how dire purely commerical TV then watch ITV1 (or 2) for an evening....The TV quivalent of brain death...

I HATE itv1's logo. That sickly blue and yellow. I can't even remember what the old one was like now. Haven't lived in an English-speaking country for 10 years now, it's good to be back :-)

If you want a reason at all to support such things as the BBC look no further than the TV that is offered in Italy.

Yeah I'm with jand on this too, bbc2 with programs like horizon and newsnight and the like have got me into things which I would never have otherwise known about. BBC4 is good as well, as well as radio 3,radio4 and some of radio1(john peel, etc), but BBCi is the best website around, tons of great content, just like the bbc in general, you can get into things on there which lead you into bigger and better things. did u know they have under the aphex section 2 tracks from 26mixes, in full length and hi quality!.....
Oh and this radiophonic workshop thing looks wicked, and the doctor who theme scares my mum still :) fun to be had methinks....
