so the isness has not really been discussed here. why so? well here is my review.
it's really a different album. like, there is no fsol OR other artist that would have released an album like that. the isness left me feeling all 'wft?!' at first. but i must say i really really like it now after a few listenings.
the flute, sitar and (steel) guitars remind me of progrock, but then again not. my bf claims he keeps hearing other songs in the isness (especially in mello hippo disco show and galaxial pharmaceutical).
it's a very springful album in my opinion. very organic and 'airy'. also a very cool album when one is stoned :>
i think it has same kind of emotional stuff as 'splinter' by sneaker pimps. it can also have something to do with the similar voices :o
as a fsol freak i must say i was terrified to listen to the isness after all the negative stuff going around about it.

the isness was discussed to death when it came out, neetta... just do a search for "isness". glad you like it, i thought it was a great album myself. there's a reason why they didn't release it under their FSOL name (except in america cos they were forced); i'm sure the next FSOL album will be more like what we're used to from them, but obviously informed by their new sense of instrumentation and psychedelic overtones.

i did a search dear :o
yes, i can also see why they only had that little 'produced by fsol' text on the album.. but it's just a great album. and yes, i have the american import. was the non-am release different? i payed my ass off because of the 'import' tag :(

ah there you go.. "isness" should get you plenty of matches now :)
i don't know the difference between european and american versions except the EU version is credited properly to Amorphous Androgynous, not FSOL. does finland not get many cd's, do they all have to be imported?

i should think we get quite alot of cds... after all we are no longer the periferia of europe :D but i never saw isness anywhere, until that one import cd in a usually crappy record shop. the cd is very nice though - like the needle hole camera art :)

i think it's crap. after listening to it i felt cheated that i actually paid money for it. i should have downloaded it and saved the 20 bucks.
even crediting it as amorphous androgynous instead of FSOL is misleading. it sounds nothing like the first amorphous androgynous.

neetta: you should read some of the discussions we've already had on this album.. some people seem to just hate it cos it's not techno, others gave it a chance and just thought it was poorly done no matter what kind of music it's trying to be.

yes i did read some of those, people really executed that poor album :/
i just wanted to know how was it crap.. i think it was good production, good musicians, some of my favourite instruments and nice composition.. ok it's not too progressive on the composite side but the sounds etc. just make such a good complex.. even if it is not someones '2 cents' i would not say its CRAP. its such an ugly thing to say, ' i did not like it' would do.
i must say that so far i like galaxial pharmacuetical most. there is one part on that song that is just so awesome .. rrr. RRR :)

well mostly i think its crap for 2 reasons: 1. What i love about all other FSOL releases is the sort-of "urban sprawl" sound; that futuristic, blade runner, cyber-ambient sound. so naturally when they released a new album, i thought it would at least carry over some of that feeling. of course not all albums from one artist need to sound the same, and no two of their albums do. But, the isness doesn't even sound like the same band. therefore i felt cheated, or tricked into buying it. this is a prime reason why i seldom buy things before downloading them. guess i learned my lesson.
2. the second reason i can't abide this album is that i just have never cared for that world music sitar and panpipe sound. just personal preferance. whenever i hear it i think of the character Tim Robbins played in High Fidelity. that music just seems made for the new-age steven segal ponytail wearing space healer people.
i'm glad some people like it, i just hope that their future projects stay away from that hindu crap.

another great thing i like about FSOL that was not apparent on the isness:
they are very skilled at using samples. the only other band that i can think of that uses samples like they do is Orbital. they are really good at writing whole songs based on one sample. Dead Cities is a good example where they use Rachel's Song from Blade runner soundtrack and that ennio morricone flute sample.
again, this is the kind of thing i was hoping for on the isness.

Now That's What I Call Xenophobia, Vol. 1!
p.s. about samples, didn't you read the liner notes? they sampled tons, and in the same way they've ALWAYS sampled, from accelerator to dead cities. this makes me think you didn't even try to get into it, though you're welcome to not like the style of music.

I liked some of this album but overall it just didn't interest, I was aware that it was completely different than their previous albums (of which i only heard isdn) and was expecting something different but it just sounded to similar to many things Ive already heard. Some songs I did like quite a bit (galaxial pharmaceutical being one of my favorites) and I liked the art work a lot too. Overall its hard for me to say how much I like it.

and WHY png remixes aren't so good:
because the original track is way better than the remixes. and the original is so heavily sampled from that dead can dance song i sometimes feel that is already a remix of some kind .. and i never got the point of remix albums.

ok so i gave it another listen today...
still crappy.
this album does have an unprecedented effect on me though. It is the only album i have ever owned that makes me hostile... not hostile like pantera or NIN make a person, but hostile like boiling rage and vengence. Its that flute on track 6 that really puts me over the edge. I cannot stand this album. it makes me very angry. I am now realizing that they deliberately misled and decieved me. I feel like the butt of some great joke. i want my money back and if they ever come to this town, I AIM TO GET IT!

It's to radically non-FSOL. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE lifeforms. Dead Cities gives me goosebumps - it oozes talent. And ISDN is has such a dirty funk - you can't help but resist.
Isnes.....I don't get the same vibe here. It's a FAR cry from Tales of Ephidrena. That was one sweet mindfuck.
