"But what if you have a supremacist couple who see having a baby with dark hair as wrong? As technology improves this will become a real issue..."
when parents make up a bad reason to kill the unborn baby then I'm against it of course because in that case it falls under the "kill the baby out of convenience" category. To form an opinion on this I first have to know the problem then I decide then the parents(all this in theory of course)

I definately believe in "degrees" rather than absolutes in illness, esp. relating to mental illness. People may only have miled OCD and be able to conquer it. It's not as clean cut as you're OCD or you're not, I think most people have a slight hint of acting in a compulsive way from time to time, just as most people have a hint of synesthasia (the "condition", not the artistic quality).

I'm well pro on abortion, but I don;t think that it should be used as an excuse not to use protection.
At the end of the day, acidents happen and if it's the wrong place at the wrong time it's not fair on you or the child.
I think also you have to be a little selfish in these situations, cause you may resent the child if your life doesn't go as planned, and again this is just not fair

At the end of the day, its the woman's body and she has a right to do as she pleases, ultimately.
But abortions can be really traumatic so they aren't used as a form of post-contraception.

You can't actually have a baby aborted if you're 6months or over
there are also 3 types of abortion you can have depending on your stage of pregnancy:
the 1st is to take a pill which will force miscarrage, the 2nd is to go anuder and have an operation which will remove the featus and "other stuff" (ewe), the 3rd is to have induced labour

some girls only seem to want to stick with drunken mish-position fumblings under the covers and thats part of the problem...

I think abortion needs to kept legal - if you'll look at all the reasons listed for it above, and what fine lines they run on, it's too hard to see what is and isn't legitimte - and if the legality of each and every abortion was handed over to a court, or simply suspended, many women would be unjustly served. Women would be required to stand long court to justify whether or not what had happened to them was rape, and whether they were eligible for abortion. It's not a thing easily or frequently admitted to, and it is always traumatic, and shattering - not anything that should ever have to be widely exposed. I have read hundreds of abortion cases and never seen one that wasn't traumatic and shattering as well - abortion isn't used as a 'oh well, I'll just do it' thing in case of pregnancy, its an awful ordeal that leaves many women severely depressed for decades. Granted it needs to be taught more clearly that NO means of birthcontrol is 100% effective, and that seeing to birthcontrol is the responsibility of both partners, never just one. To end a life for no reason is wrong, but who gets to decide what reason is just?

pogo> realized I never responded in the death penalty thread..
" Your 19 right? Look back at when you were like 16-17 years old. What would
you do if you got a girl of a simular age preggers?? You have your whole life ahead of you, not much money to
support yourself let alone a child and still living with your parents. Would you really bring a child into the world knowing that it'll probably grow up in a poor enviroment?" ..
my answer> I wouldn't *want* to bring a child into the world, but that doesn't mean I would kill/abort it. The child, if left alone, would become another human being.. my kid no less! I would take responsibility for my carelessness and become an early father. If I did not have the means to support it, I would put it up for adoption or find an alternative. I think abortion, though very practical, has significant ethical problems and should be avoided. I for one could not live with the guilt of knowing I destroyed what was potentially my child. I would not want to put my hypothetical girlfriend through that either. Better to have the child and struggle through with it tha abort it and live with guilt and speculation. That's not even considering that the child may serve some *beneficial* latent function. It could bring on the maturity a struggling, delinquint youth needs.. it could bring joy and love into your life despite the initial regret and probable financial difficulty. Bottom line: better to have it and deal than abort and regret.

I think that Abortion should be legal, and the option should be open to all women if they choose to do so.
I mostly agree w/ Laserbeak. I think abortion should be a "last resort" option. If a woman is impregnated through non-consentual sex, such as rape, incest, etc. And also if she is incapable of raising her child, or if the contraceptives failed during sex.
I think more people should consider adoption. There are many childless couples out there who want a baby. Of course, the adoption system in the US is plagued with problems, and that needs to be worked on first.

i'm against
but when you think of it... the world is really crowded and i wouldn't wanna put a baby on this miserable world anyway these days. i mean, it's bad enough that less and less ppl clear off because of our finding cures for the various epidemics and diseases...
this way, it isn't survival of the fittest; ieverybody gets to survive in this society... the human race will lose the evolutionary race if things continue to be like they are today... :(
but my instinct still says abortion is murder of the lowest kind -> the baby can't defend itself...
euthanasia is another matter, though.
sad thing is, i'm being serious thru all the above :)

pro-choice ofcourse. It's never an easy dissicion (i mean for a woman who is considering an abortion). And you can be sure she will think very carefully about it... i don't think anyone would ever think of abortion as a means of anticonception :-/ It's a good thing that people should atleast have the option to choose for an abortion.
And i don't really think of it as murder. Doctors will only perform an abortion in the earliest stage of pregnancy... technically speeking those cells are alive ofcourse... but it's not really aware of anything yet. That baby won't know what it's missing if it never gets born... it's a sad thing, but not murder imo

"my answer> I wouldn't *want* to bring a child into the world, but that doesn't mean I would kill/abort it."
But don't you think your child would feel very unwelcome if it was born under those circumstances? A mistake that was never supposed to happen... only allowed to live because you felt it was wrong to have it killed.
I think all children deserve to be born into a loving family that has been looking forward to them and think of them as a beautiful gift.
Ofcourse you would still be able to love your child, if it was born more or less "by mistake"... but i think there is a difference, and as it grows older your child will understand the situation in which it was born. :-/

"And i don't really think of it as murder" yes, murder is a bad description because it involves the killing: A: has to be unlawful(varies from country to country) and B: involves premeditated malice (highly unlikely with abortion)
"but it's not really aware of anything yet. That baby won't know what it's missing if it never gets born..."
I don't really know about the first part but I think the second part is a bit reversed: People never knew what they were missing because they never saw the baby....
"But don't you think your child would feel very unwelcome if it was born under those circumstances?"
I think that this is speculation and besides: a human being is much more than the product of it's parent's (good or bad)influence. This all makes making a decision very very hard.

I don't really want to get technical about the word 'murder' really... i just meant i don't really see abortion as the killing of a child. Or if you will: ending the life of a child.
At what point do a couple of cells become a child? We don't consider a spermcel or the female egg "life" yet... but on the second those two are combined the anti-abortion people feel it needs to be protected.
I can pretty much understand all your arguments (and actually all the anti-abortion arguments)... but what it comes down to i guess is that i look at it more from the parent's perspective. You might be saving the life of the unborn child, but at the same time destroying the future of two young children who are not ready to become parents at all yet. (in the case someone wants an abortion for being too young... there are also other reasons ofcourse).
It's the parents decision, and for them it's hard enough as it is... the last thing they need is pro-life activists accusing them of murder :-/

"And i don't really think of it as murder. Doctors will only
perform an abortion in the earliest stage of pregnancy... "
this actually isn't taking partial-birth abortions into account, which is another controversy altogether..
I have to agree with Laserbeak on many of these points.. surrounded you said that a child wqould feel bad if it knew it was "only allowed to live because you
felt it was wrong to have it killed." Wouldn't the child then be grateful for this sens eof maorality? Isn't it better this way than saying to the child "We wanted to have you aborted but didn't have enough money" or "you were already too far developed" or something?
All this is not to mention that you're discarding potential lives.. Have you ever read "the Scarlet Letter"? The illegitimate child, the symbol of the main character's immorality, also became one of the greatest sources of joy for its despairing mother. Letting a child live, even if you decide to let someone else raise it, may be the best thing that's ever happened to you regardless of the initial disappointment and unwant (is that a word?). Anyway, I feel that abortion should be avoided since there's so many alternatives and possibilities that are destroyed upon an aborted pregnancy.
