I'm an elitist, I admit. I flaunt my knowledge about music
and use it to mock other lower forms of life. I am superior.

no better then anyone else, but definitely no worse... we're
all equal overall I think... most of us anyways I guess...

i try really hard to not act superior than others....

this is off the subject but who made the song "Battery
Powered T-shirt" with the artist name Stuffed Animal?

And also has anyone heard Teapot's mix of Ceri JC's 'tearing
down barns'? whenever i think about the drums in the
background, the ones that sort of follow a sine pattern of
pitch, it makes my stomach feel really weird! it's really
cool, in a perverse way!

there is some kind of elitism about topics there, since
"whatever-topics" are deleted... and sometimes there are
some "are people listening to idm ruling the universe
because of their obviously superior intelligence and
taste?"
topics (j/k! ;)), but i think that's all! ;)

and i don't belong to any "elite", and i don't want to!
i don't want to be, nor am, superior in any way... i just

It would be boring if everyone was equal. Some people are
noticeably stupider and more pathetic than others, and they
make me feel better about myself.

*evil grin

Dumb people make for good entertainment! There's PATHETIC

dumb people, but I like charmingly dumb people. And I'm
going to stop typing because I have no idea what I'm talking

elitism = a form of egoism ?

I'd count myself an elitist. Doesn't mean one has to act
prejudiced does it? - or perhaps this is an inevitable
consequence of being an elitist?

"
You were going good :) .. muahahahah ..

Whether its perceived intelligence (whatever that is
anyway), or other aspects of a person, i'd say its
inevitable that we discrimate in some subjective way -
otherwise what's the point in commenting on all those
aspects if they are all the same!!! From this it shouldn't
be surprising that we have subjective preferences with
regards to certain aspects or sum such. Ie. make some more
"pathetic" or less ..

?

people who listen to the music we do to be elitist, at least
about music, when much of the rest of the world is listening

elitism is some sad shit. there will always be someone
better (smarter, stronger, sexier, richer, more powerful,
etc.) than you, so why bother flexing at people who you're
more accomplished/gifted than? my girlfriend used to
occasionally call me out when i was being a snob about
music, i usually disagreed with her (i don't see it how she
does) but because that was how i was coming across to her
(if no one else) i made a point to be cooler and more humble
about the things that i'm good at or knowledgable of. i
think a lot of people on this board, and a lot of the
artists we listen to (ae, afx) aren't humble enough.

offline Zephyr Twin from ΔΔΔ on 2002-06-26 04:39 [#00285191]

titsworth: I think its hard for some of the artists we
listen to NOT to be elitist, I mean christ, every show they
put on hundreds of people scream their names and other
things like wanting to have their babies (don't know if that
actually happens =p).

All I'm saying is that If I were RDJ and walked around all
day being followed by reporters and adoring fans, I'd tend
to begin thinking "Gee, if these people are this interested
in me either I must be doing something right or they are
terribly pitiful."

My point is, sometimes elitism occurs by no intention of the
person it occurs to. I think we all are subconsciously
prejudiced in some way/shape/form.

Example: If I were to drive into a slum part of town and two
guys in beat up and dirty clothes approached me, I would
probably immediately wonder if they were going to rob me,
and my sole basis for these assumptions would be their
manner of dress, when in fact all they may be asking for is
some food.

Bottomline, there will always be elitism/prejudice but if we
recognize it for what it is and not let it control our
mindset, then there shouldnt be any more problems like that
dreadful nazy party. ;)

(holy shit this post was long, sorry for the
long-windedness)

^100% with ya zephyr.

I think one needs to distinguish between arrogance
(presumption) and elitism. Isn't one an elitist for thinking
one's own opinion is the best? I think so! :)

If you're good at something why do you need to hide it? I
don't think talent = arrogance - but if talent is looked
upon in such disgust why seek it at all! Surely if being
egalitarian were the virtue - why would anyone strive for
anything?

offline Zephyr Twin from ΔΔΔ on 2002-06-26 04:50 [#00285203]
Points: 16982 Status: Regular | Show recordbag

good question! Talent isnt necessarily arrogance, but I
guess flaunting your talents or putting others down because
their talents in a particular area don't match yours would
be arrogance. I guess thats technically not the same as
elitism tho... hmmmmmmm...

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-06-26 04:58 [#00285215]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

Exactly ..

if one were to resort to pettiness - flaunting one's own
talent as a MEANS to an end (ie. arrogance) - surely one is
discrediting and squandering the very talent one posesses.

putting other people down is a waste of one's own talent
(unless that was ones talent! :)

I definetly don't think elitism ought to be equated with
arrogance. To me it seems a fact that we are all different -
trying to convince ourselves that we are all equal surely is
some attempt to gain contentment -> a lack of striving for
talent? the will to power!

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-06-26 05:01 [#00285218]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

Plus you get the reverse elitism (more appropriately
arrogance), people that are bitter (jealous?) about not
having a talent!

I wouldn't consider myself bitter or jealous of my musical
talents compared to RDJ's?

I find IDM snobs to be far more pathetic and offensive than
a hardcore N'Sync fan. To deem yourself superior to others
based on something as subjective and asinine as musical
taste is sad. Admitting that you do it is even sadder.

-social statement begin:
As far as we know we are the only intelligent species in a
universe whose size we can't even fathom, and an
insignificant species at that. We live for eighty years on
a planet that has lived for hundreds of millions. Yet
people forget the exceptional uniqueness their life
represents and waste their brief time here judging others.
We should appreciate life's beauty while we still have the
eyes to see it and the ears to hear it. Sooner than we'd
like, we will all be dust.
-statement over-

condesending and arrogent. Its odd...because im quiet, not

I think people assume i think im better then them, because i
like to be alone, and stuff. I dont know...

i guess i would say i am kind of elitist in a sense... there
are just some fucking stupid people out there.

But i wouldnt flaunt it.

I think i make really good music, but i dont think im a god.
I heard some peoples music (not on this MB btw) that i didnt
think was good at all, but i wouldnt be like "you suck, i
rule" i am very considerite when i tell people my opinions.
How would i like it if someone said i sucked?

And, in some sense, i think any one who listens to non
mainstream/pop music, is elitist in a sense.

anyways... yeah

"I find IDM snobs to be far more pathetic and offensive than

"

And deeming people that 'deem themselves superior in
something as subjective as musical taste, yet admit it' -
isn't sad?

At the very least this is a nice example of elitism?!

I'm not saying I encourage such attitudes - but its one of
those things. Hypothetical example: I prefer my musical
taste over others - hence "i" feel my taste is superior to
others. Feeling that your tastes are worthless and other
peoples tastes are far better than your own is reverse
elitism (ie acknowledging an elite). If one feels that all
taste's are equal - fine. But at the end of the day one
still prefers one kind of music (for arguments sake) over
another, and so such an egalitarian stance seems somewhat
redundant. I don't see why such a stigma is added to
elitism?!

Everything can be reduced to arbitrariness - and everything
essentially is - but at the end of the day, we have to
assert this hypocricy - there is no way out!

No harm intended - just to and fro'ing.
