file sharing - THE TRUTH

how? to produce 1000 vinyls costs $4 each (for a short run)

Mastering - $3000
label design - $1000
artists upfront fee - $2000

shops take 50% of the profit from sale

add that up and youll find that the breakeven point is
usually between £2500 and £3500 depending on mono print,
4-colour, special colour etc

there's nothing like owning a cd, mp3s don't compare

WHO CAN PROVE THAT FILE SHARING IS CAUSING RECORD LABELS TO
LOSE THAT MUCH MONEY ANYWAY??

Seriously!! So a company notices that it's profits have
dropped dramatically, how could they possibly link that with
file sharing?

sound wise, mp3s are pretty close to CD, even at 128 its
pretty hard to tell the difference

most idm packagings are a bit deceiving... some are really
nice, but no booklet or something...

i think all artists should put more track clips on their
websites, and longer to get a real idea of what it sounds
like (10-second, crappy quality clips aren't enough to give
you a real idea)... warp's website is very well done on this
point, but for some artists there aren't any at all... and
if, besides, they're impossible to find in stores and you
have to order them (goddamn, i hate this when you have to
wait several weeks or months to get a single cd... :( )...
it's very bad for their business -_-

not if you burn them to cd's they sound shit. And I don't
like the computer whirring when i'm listening to music

i'd like more in my squarepusher booklets (if you can even

the cd

Yep B3n,there's nothing like it,plus if you happen to own an
original vinyl that's even more satisfaction....mp3 are just
that,there's no artwork,no nothing,just the music,and
personally,I need everything as a whole........=)

ive done tests, comparing an mp3 i made from one of my CD's
to the original. ive then burnt the mp3s to cd and put the
original in one cd player, and the mp3 copy in the other cd
player. I press play on both then crossfade between the two,
no one ive tried that with can tell the difference

I dunno, but I that statement is from one of the labelowners
of "Thunderground rec".

Mastering is done on the computer....label design is done by
a 17 year old CS clan memember, with l33t Photoshop
skillz.......Artist are only getting paid if the record
breaks the point even.

So there, they are mostly releasing records for the love of
the music.......

counterbalance this?

i agree with B3n with cds and stuff... and listening to
music, laying on your bed at night, with all lights and
computer off is great ^^

See that's exactly my point, you love U-ziq and have 6
cds,but the rare-hard-to-find tracks you have to dld because
can't find it anywere....It's like me with RDJ,I have more
than 10 cds plus some original AFX vinyls, but there are some
stuph that are almost impossible for me to find,so,mp3 is
the solution, got to have everything from my man.....==)

a CD case is like 10 times the width of a CD, I have 3 or 4
hundred CD's in 2 folders - portable, easily. not so if i
had all the cases too :D

To be honest, I think IDM listeners are less likely to be
solely downloading stuff without buying..

and it may be a quality thing...before MP3s a lot of people
bought MU or WARP stuff on sight without listening to
it...now they have the chance to preview with MP3s, the
borderline tunes & the ones they don't like, they simply
don't buy....

Now who's fault is that?...strikes me that it's just the
consumer balancing things out...

what's sad about this is that it won't be as easy to
discover new music now, to hear what are people talking
about when they talk about one track (example: photek — ni
ten ichi ryu, i downloaded it as soon as i read the topic
and i like it... maybe i'll buy a photek cd but i already
have too much cds to buy :))... and what about the "rare",
unavailable tracks?

I don't need to ever move them though. if I was moving
around I would but i've got no need. i've got about 300 and
they take up a small portion of a cupboard

ok, it could a big huge cupboard but its not, trust me

mike p, smike p...who cares?...

theres an large amount of people saying completely the
opposite...I kinda trust independent study (as quoted above)
and also, my own experience & that of other people on these
boards...

Personally, I think it's the ability to preview that
affecting CD Sales...A lot of downloading takes place by
people who wouldn't dream of buying anyway so that isn't
affecting sales at all...

I don't want another arguement thread but I think its just
all to do with mass culture. kids may like the mainstream
music they hear but it doesn't inspire them like it used to
because its so commercialised. there are no hendrix's or
floyds to look up to, so the music doesn't mean as much and
they don't buy it. with mainstream monopolising all types of
media many listeners don't even get the chance of a look in
on more varied stuff

I agree B3N...CDs sound far better than a 128MP3...you can
get CD quality out of MP3 if you know what you are doing...

and the booklet/case/artwork is all part of the music...in
art terms, it's akin to a frame around a picture...

I wish we could look beyond "MP3s killing music"; I really
don't think it's that simple...
