 | the princess can fly so has the greatest advantage, there's a trick, I forget like go down the right most pipe while
carrying a potion or something and you warp. This was my
favorite mario game I think, such a great game but really
messed up a bit on the game boy color version. It has such a
weird magical feel, crazy ladybugish creatures climbing on
vines, flying magic carpets, fry guy's multiplying self,
mouser, wart is awesome, flying magic carpets, great music
and sounds... Also get this game "pocky and rocky" I've been
playing it recently a lot, later levels get better. At first
it seems like one of those games that are on crack or
 something.

 | the ending pissed me off so much though! i felt cheated. the thing i love about toad is that if you're good enough, you
can run and throw something, let it hit a shyguy or
whatever, and then catch it. i don't know why that makes me
so happy, but it does. i'm playing it right now, i'm at

 | Mario 2 was great, but it brings back bad memories because I always found it really hard, and it would piss me off. I
still think I've only beaten once or twice. It doesn't fit
 in with the others.

It's not an actual Mario game, it's really Doki Doki Panic,
some Japanese thing. Exact same game with different sprites,
it had an Arabic theme, lots of turbans and shit! They just
changed the sprites to Mario characters and called it Mario
 2. I always liked it, it was fucking weird.

 | I think its a fair bet that Princess is the best, as you can correct your falls because she descends so slow, and this
gives great distance coverage. Is Mario the worst? Toad
was too fruity looking for me, I'm just like when I play
 characters, can't play someone I don't respect.

 | i almost always use princess toadstool because she can fly. the REAL mario 2 (which looked almost the same is mario 1)
was released in japan but never came out in the US because
they thought it would be too hard or something. this game
was later released for super nintendo in the mario all stars
 game as "the lost levels."

another interesting thing is that Birdo was actually a GUY
who thought he was a girl (it says that in the instruction
booklet!), but they changed that later (i think if you look
at the birdo trophy in Super Smash Brothers Melee birdo is a
 felmale).

 | Super Mario 3 is my personal favorite.
Mario 2 actually wasn't even a Mario game originally. It was
released in Japan as Doki Doki Panic, and then it was ported
over here with the addition of Mario characters and items.
Why did they do it? I don't know, but the real Mario 2 is
actually the Lost Levels game from the SNES Mario AllStars
 collection.

I'm betting they ported Doki Doki as Mario because they felt
that Japan's Mario 2 wouldn't fare well compared to other
platformers that were out at the time. Either way, our Mario
 2 is still good.

But Mario 3 is still my fave, just because of the amazing
variety in the levels. You had the giant world, one of my
faves in Mario history, that amazing desert stage, and let's
not forget the Koopa Kids! The Boswer in SMB3 is one of the
 best 8bit Mario bosses ever!

But as for SMB2, my faves changed each level. Mario was good
against bosses, Luigi was good on levels that required much
jumping, Toad was best in the desert, but the Princess for
some reason was my all-around fave. I'd use her for like 9
 levels of the game.

 | Mario 3 was breathtaking, the sense of accomplishment when I got to the Desert Land was fantastic... and that was just
the SECOND WORLD! AAAAHHHHH! So awesome, it's still mega-fun
 today.

I always LOVED acquiring the Frog Suit, the Tanooki and the
Hammer Bros. Suit... I thought it was the only flaw in the
game that you didn't get them much, and they really weren't
all that useful. You get hit once and your excitement would
turn to anger knowing that was one of only, like, THREE
 motherfucking Frog Suits!

they seriously need to make a new side-scrolling mario game

backgrounds and effects, and whatnot.. they should combine
the best aspects of all the mario games:
tanooki mario, hammer throwing mario, frog mario, and the
little inventory window thing from mario 3, how you can
throw shit and the option of being which ever character you
want like in mario 2, the feather and yoshi from mario
world, and the flagpole with fireworks at the end of every
level like on the original game..

 | Super Mario World is easily the best mario-game imho. It has everything that was good about all the other games. Only
done better, and in larger quantities :-p

Riding Yoshi was also incredibly fun. Nintendo are really
fantastic when it comes to gameplay, because riding on yoshi
really does make the controls feel different. Like you're
 heavier, and have better grip.

Also mario's cape looked very cool, and was much more fun to
fly with than the tail from mario3. (i just loved flying all
the way up, and then diving nose-down back to the ground
 :-D).

Then there are the ghost-houses, the switch-palaces, the
bowser-castles,(remember climbing those fences? And knocking
off the koopas on the other side of the fence? That was the
best :-D). And also very much, and very rewarding, secrets.
Not just a hidden 1up mushroom here and there. But an actual
secret world to be discovered! Best platform-game ever.

 | not to mention, george, when you beat the last level of that hidden world, you get to play an entirely new game!.. no
wait.. it was just the same thing but the turtles were
replaced with baseball-capped mario head-looking things..

 | Every Mario game has been the best of its respective generation, except Mario Sunshine (and arguably Mario 2,
even though it's great). Miyamoto admitted this, and he's
 got BIG plans.

 IGN.com

June 20, 2003 - The latest issue of Japan's Nintendo Dream
magazine is apparently home to good news for Mario fanatics
who were a bit disappointed with Mario Sunshine. According
to the magazine, Nintendo's upcoming Mario 128 title is
being built around a new idea that's never before been seen
in a game. Apparently, Nintendo refrained from putting the
title on display at E3 in order to prevent it from being
 stolen.
Nintendo development grand daddy Shigeru Miyamoto has gone
on record (with Japan's Playboy magazine, of all things)
stating that Mario 128 will feature a freshness that was
lacking from Mario Sunshine. We presume this is what he was
 referring to.

We'll be back with more as soon as we learn it.

 | that game sounds very interesting.. nintendo always outdone themselves in some ways when it comes to the mario
games, and i think nintendo and miyamoto have done a pretty
good job making the games 3d and all with mario 64 and mario
sunshine, and still making the games have some fun gameplay,
but to me, mario is always best in 2d.. call me old
 fashioned...but that's how i feel.

has anybody played the bonus 2d side-scrolling mario type
game on the smash brothers game for gamecube..it's really
good, you can play as mario and use swords and lightsabers,
etc.. nintendo really should make an entire 2d mario game
like that, similar to how i described it in my earlier post,
using the best aspects of the other games..
they can put in all the fancy-assed 3d cell-shaded graphics
they want, but they will never be able to beat the gameplay
of mario 1, 2, 3 and to a somewhat lesser extent, super
 mario world.

 | Spammer!
And I'm an old-schooler too... most of my favorite games are
from SNES. But my favorite Mario game is Mario 64, that was
the mid 90's version of 1985's Mario Bros., it was THAT
influential and grounbreaking. And fun as hell, Banjo
Kazooie and whatever other platformers since haven't topped
it. Mario Sunshine was a hiccup, but it was still an AAA
 game.

I'd like a new 2D Mario... but for GBA. I want them to put
all their resources into a 3D Mario first... maybe have
another development team working on a new 2D Mario for GBA.
We haven't played a TRUE 2D Mario sequel since 1991! The
Yoshi and Wario games are damn good though, 2D still has
 life.
