I guess that’s how I’m going to define England to my friends who’ve never been there now. “A racist nation” will give them a good idea of what people in England are like. They could wander around London pointing at people and shouting “racist!” or “you're a part of the problem!” feeling mighty clever. All for kindness, tolerance and educational purposes of course. Let’s heal the world this way my friends! I didn’t even realise I was a racist until this thread came up, but now it seems clear I’ve been a passive racist for years, maybe even full blown without realising it. Thank the Lord there’s smart and concerned people out there to put me on the right path. I mean come on, England is neither a safe haven of peace, nor a racist nation. There’s such a thing as “gray” as big wrote. If England can be defined as a racist nation then ultimately it can be defined as anything we think of that’s going on there. Paedophilic nation has a nice ring to it, or maybe Murderous Nation. I mean they’d all work if that’s how we think now. But mention this and it seems some people’s reasoning is that “ooh look at him he’s minimising the situation, he’s probably a part of the problem etc...” without having even really had a conversation on racism yet. Bam you’re labelled and I feel too many people do this now, and extremely quickly. Weird thing is that no one in this thread is saying “chill, there’s not that much racism”. So I don’t understand the argument anymore, appart form the personal judging. Ok Wilco has his thing with Muslims that I think umbroman agrees with, and mo, but other than that we tend to get along here, regardless of our differences. There is institutional racism in the media for sure, I cant stand shit stirrers like Piers Morgan and Katie Hopkins. I guess it doesn't help that Megan doesn't come across as a particularly likeable person, so its hard to differentiate what is genuine criticism and what is genuine racism, the criticism has probably been far over the top, but its that sort of toxic media cycle that generates press. Labelling an entire country racist as some cretinous twitter commentators has is laughable though. Seems again this age of polarity, you are either with us or against us. |

I get defensive if someone calls me racist, same way I'd get defensive if someone called me a nonce. Who knows, maybe I've internalised my nonce-ness?!??!
