i have been repeatedly refining that 0:50 and beyond, i
would say 0:57 is complete complete now, not like before
where it was merely complete. mixing in milkytracker is
like... typing the same numbers over and over a lot. you
might notice some harsh clicks in some of my stuff. took me
a while to sort out what was going on there; it turns out
it's just some sort of clipping that doesn't quite show up
on the VU meter. it was particularly annoying when i'm
like... K04? K05? and one sounds better rhythmically, but
the other makes a click. so now that i understand this, i'm
going back and repeatedly making things quieter, sort of
like an animal grooming its fur. but then, the impetus for
this track, that ctrix vid, i've never really used AXX
before, volume slides. i would just hard-set levels in the
volume column. that's what the volume column is there for;
why tie up an fx col with it? but, turns out, it doesn't
click as much, either. it's probably something to do with it
cutting out in the middle of the waveform and effectively
generating a DC offset pop. not only does volume slide help
with this, but i'm getting some good shit out of it
immediately, sort of dj crossfade shuffle. so, yeah, while i
might continue fussing with the mix(down) a bit, that's
largely sorted, that first 0:57. the next part, i know what
i want to do, which is rip off infected mushroom a bit, but
knowing me i'll get distracted halfway and it won't actually
really wind up sounding like them, and this is perfectly ok.
w/rt to buying things, i think furniture is still a good
start for now

as i set down the bottle of woodford reserve, i noticed it
had a slight bulge. like, if you viewed the bottle,
two-dimensionally, from the top, it would not just be a long
rectangle: between the two longer sides of the rectangle,
and outward curve. if you don't set the bottle down
dead-center -- and who does -- then it influences the
rippling as the bourbon sloshes back and forth. parabolic
expansion and contraction of the width. just a little, but
enough to cause standing rhythms as the bourbon bounces back
and forth. i feel like i should try this with drums or
perhaps rave stabs

i think it goes back to someone telling me it was tacky back
when i was a n00b... and, well, yes, it easily can be. but
if you use it sparingly to distinguish a spare bit of noise
or two, you have more... i dunno.. more.

Sunvox. Available on everything, free and can sequence in
really interesting ways. Don't know why you'd buy a hardware
tracker tbh.

i started using milkytracker as a joke. the idea was to do
napkin sketches: let's do a crappy vsnares song in an
hour. now let's rip off foul play's suspected. now
afx

with this, though, as with any software i've gotten into
heavily, you run through the cheap laughs quickly and then
you start going uphill; each thing is more complex than the
last. you notice mistakes you've been making and wind up
with an ever-growing list of pitfalls to avoid. processes to
follow for better results. then a list of things you've done
before, we did that before, now we have to do something more
complicated

this eventually got me entirely fed up with cubase sx,
ableton, whatever. milky is a little different, though,
because it's so simple and trashy and i can't get lost in
plugins. but, on the other hand, now i find myself getting
to volume slides and much more detailed mixing hex; perhaps
panning soon, too. i am even thinking about trying to bounce
the individual tracks to wav and perhaps mix it in cubase, i
dunno, we'll see

Got loads of guitar pedals. Phasers, flangers, analogue
delays, digital delays, choruses. Gonna do a Roland d110
album programmed by the Atari st, with 808 and 303

anyways, i'm deep down a rabbit hole, here.

behringer lawsuits!

LAZY_TITLE

people were trashing behringer for ripping stuff off,
there's a link to the gearslutz thread in which uli
behringer posts to himself. eventually, though, he sues for
defamation. forums are serious business

sidestepping all the legal and ego salad, there is some
discussion about how the behringer model d actually sounds,
and why it sounds how it sounds. the production models won't
always match the schematics, the components have unique
characteristics and tolerances, and some parts aren't made
any more. in the end, it comes down to an ear test.
apparently, most minimoogs sounded different from one
another anyways. so, like, at the end of the day, what have
you got? and there are people saying all sorts of shit.
like: it sounds nice, it's got that vintage slant, but it
doesn't really sound like a moog

for the model d, well, i'm cool with it. i've never used a
real minimoog. as long as it sounds good, we're good.

the sh-101, however, is different. i had a real one for
years, and if behringer's clone sounds significantly
different from the real thing, i want to know

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2020-06-07 04:48 [#02602827]
Points: 25264 Status: Regular

i also get the sense behringer doesn't exactly go as far as
moog on QA.

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2020-06-07 06:03 [#02602828]

listening to youtube demos of the MS-1(01), the waveforms
seem mustard, but the resonant response of the filter is a
bit suspect. on the other hand, i could afford the behringer
reasonably soon, as opposed to having to shell out 3x as
much after months of camping on AH list and ebay and then
having to deal with it when it breaks so perhaps it's worth
the tradeoff

going back to what i've said earlier in this thread,
furniture is a real concern. if i bought this, i'm not sure
where i'd put it. spending money on furniture, what a pain.
why not just use plastic shelves and sterlite things? but
this only gets you so far

yep, that page looks noughties af. i saw some of his
experiments and his tape player somewhere on youtube before,
but he wasn't really on my radar. i think he mostly works
for bigger companies now with his video synth stuff

the module i bought is quite simple and nice. can't wait to
put some modular stuff through it. could also be nice as a
stroposcopic effect background for some live noodling in the
shed, as you can plug it straight to a video projector

i really think i should cave and get an mpc1000 again. i am
hearing a p. decent pattern using a bunch of sid samples in
my hed. programming it in milky would be arduous. i have my
hardware setup with like RMIV but loading samples on that is
crap and fussy and i don't even have the samples on that
computer and etc... if i had an mpc1000, i'd have the the
noises on a CF card -- heck, i already do, in a box
somewhere -- and there wouldn't be no bullshit trying to
find them fast, audition for finding the particular ones i'm
hearing, use tap tempo rather than guess, and then just hit
record and play it out

Im selling my 909. Will have two grand spare after paying
stuff off. Tempted to get an akai mpc 60 and s950, for a dj
premier hip hop setup, aphex and squarepusher also used
these. But im shit at hip hop. I think id better stay with
acid.

Another option is to get 3 jx3ps and trigger them from the
808. Might sound good but have problems getting
jx3psmwithnanworking sequencer might be expensive.

What im really fucking tempted by is elektron boxes, analog
four mkii, rytm mkii, and the machinedrum mkii.

Then around christmas im gonna get the polyend tracker.

is there anything particularly special about the mpc 60 or
is it just an older mpc and aphex used it

i mean, like, lots of people used it, it's all over, but i
never heard someone scream that the 2000 doesn't sound like
the 60

from there i guess it's just about workflow

offline umbroman3 from United Kingdom on 2020-07-10 23:54 [#02605298]

I read that preemo uses it just as a sequencer and uses the
s950 as sampler... fatboy slim used two s950s...

Guess it doesnt really matter. In a way spemding 2 grand on
digital gear seems like a waste of money... id probably just
end up selling them on ebay... i do t really make hip hop,or
drum and bass because imdont want to use copyright samples

I have a yamaha su 700 And emu esi 2000 that were cheap as
chips. 300 quid for both. Unfashionable stuff works just as
well as the big names.

fatboy slim switched to ableton, copied all his samples off
the disks painstakingly, now refers to his old studio as a
museum, let me know when you have ableton clocked and send
me pictures of the acid museum

i guess my point is don't blindly buy an mpc60 because
that's what aphex used at the time. that can be a valid
thing to understand how someone got a sound, but only to a
point. like, you don't need the exact fucking quadraverb...
unless there is something special about the mpc60 you'd be
better off with something modern, reliable... say a 1000

but maybe the menus and some bastardly step sequencer turn
you into an acid hiphop genius or something i dunno
