What is the goal of society other than to sustain itself?
Pretty fucking boring if you ask me.

society- the aggregate of people living together in a more
or less ordered community
goal- the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or
desired result

By those definitions, society can't have a goal. A goal is
for an individual person with a brain. Human society can
have 7 billion goals, but all have similar genetic
programming to replicate genes. But I'm writing this post so
that's my goal right now. If you ever pick up a pencil or
open a refrigerator that is your goal. It's just a
socialist/communist question, emphasizing the group.

Interesting yet flawed view, imo. It’s like saying a
football team doesn’t have a goal. Sure, you can debate
wether it’s eleven players working indivually or not, but
I do think you could have put more thought into it.

the purpose of society is to generate as much value as
possible for shareholders

What if 1 of the 11 football team members secretly has a
goal of losing since he bet on the other team? A single
human is a multi-cellular hive of single cells. Cells
probably aren't intelligent enough to have goals other than
what is hard wired with genetic programming. All cells in an
individual have the same DNA so they are mutually altruistic
and behave with the common goal of replicating their genes.
Though I guess viruses etc can hijack a cell and give it a
goal opposed to its peers.
I guess u can think of a football team as a super organism,
not nearly as fitting as an ant/bee colony since bee clones
have a common genetic goal/makeup so behave as a single
individual, whereas a football team is a group of 11 selfish
gene vehicles. The selfish gene is why there's infighting in
the game doom and why quentin terrantino brand is "a band
apart", a fitting name for movies where there's a mix of
cooperation and failed social cohesion/infighting. Kinda
like the infighting of alex jones and joe rogan which might
have been a tactical planned publicity stunt. It took me 20
min to refind this clip so i hope you like it.

humans are obligate social animals, even if you go off and
live in the hills alone you can only do that because you
were raised and informed by Society

we're like the naked mole rats, our eusocial cousins

Oh yeah, I remember naked mole rats from an attenborough
documentary, probably the africa one. I'm not sure if the
colony is all genetic clones like ants, but they at least
all have the same queen mother. Therefore they all have very
similar (or maybe nearly identical) genes and are altruistic
toward eachother, since from evolution's perspective,
helping a sibling spread it's genes is nearly the same as
spreading your own genes since they're almost the same
genes.
Fitting humans into such a eusocial system is putting a
square peg in a round hole since we're not all
siblings/clones so individuals are more genetically
competitive. A mole rat queen has hard wired altruism toward
all its offspring/colony. A president/king/etc doesn't,
though modern environment is different than the hunter
gatherer conditions we are hard wired for, and memetics, a
replication system on top of genetics, probably scrambles
things in even more complex ways.

this is the dumbest thread and I can see why ampi max gets
mad and posts death metal lyrics and says "thats you"

fellas, human persons exist only because we exist in a
matrix of other people, our humanity and personhood woven
out of the mad-libs back and forthing of culture and
language

without that we're unthinkable, just vague ape shapes
quickly dying

imagine yourselves without xltronic

unthinkable monkeys

I suppose some distinction should be drawn between society
which is inherent in all higher life forms and modern
civilization where arbitrary rules have been established
which aren't predicated on the natural world. or something

offline Tony Danza from Fabulous Hollywood on 2019-03-03 13:28 [#02570506]

well humans make up rules and the ones some people don't
like they call arbitrary and the ones they do like they try
to ground in nature (or divinity), as unavoidable fact

since we're making them up why not ground them in democratic
consensus, human flourishing and the common good instead

anyways culture / society goes far beyond "rules" though if
big dumb hairless apes are going to live together they do
need rules of some sort

yeah I guess what is arbitrary and what is necessary are
only different by degrees. Oh yeah don't get me wrong
without some sort of development of a general consensus,
none of us would be having this conversation, im playing
devils advocate a bit
