i know many on xlt (me included) have been working on music
since before we became members here, but never had the
chance, time or talent to become officially released. since
that is more than a decade ago for us old-schoolers, i'm
curious to hear what you would consider to be your best
track ever.

so please - post your personal single favorite/best track,
since you began making music all those years ago.

I wrote this track in 2007

lost configuration

it's good from the middle to the end, so if you get bored
fast forward it

Clips from my unfinished album from 2010:
part 1

part 2

Clips from my unfinished album from 2009:
here

The 2010 one is my most meaningfully-cosmic-- the 2009 one
was like 2 hours long, and full of some popish styles with
tangent lazer to late 90's electronic vibez- all killer no
filler, etc.

longer clip of 1 track from 2009

Nice chill-trip vibes into glitch-hoppish, mang.

Was this recorded to tape? Done on hardware?

I like the vibe. DL'ing.

If there's more than 10 xlt-users in here that wants to
share tracks, i could make it into a compilation.

nice track - i like the way it has an uneven feel to the
beat. Very good verbs.

Here's wan of the first couple of tunes I churned out when I
got into Reason 2 or 3 years ago: Acheron

One of the more complete ones from that period, but the
finish on it is rough as a dog's dick

Uneven is staggered or unsteady, like not-even or not-level

I like it. Very glitchy on the pads. Subtle progression and
nice harmonies (or disharmonies?). Do you have a
wav/flac/aiff laying around?

I would like to make a XLT compilation with these tracks if
possible, and then put them on Bandcamp for people to
download in high quality.

I made some corkers in my late teens, mainly Plaid-like
stuff but I had a go at dub, ambient, gabber and jungle too.
I never had any proper software so most of it was just
constructed from samples and assembled in Audacity lol

It's all as WAVs on an old laptop that is currently 1000km
away, so you'll just have to believe me for now

melack- nice atmo, mang~

Thx to anyone who listened to my clips and shiz.

But okay!!!

"Just one completed track", it is.....

Electric Body

Hard to choose a "best", but....
I chose Electric Body (from 2011) for this thread, because
it's an example of a lot of the musical goals that I only
dreamed of being able to execute when I first started making
music, as well as higher goals that I wanted to accomplish
later on: efficiency of melody/harmony, flow, thematic,
guiding the story with intention, catchy/memorable,
everything forward (i.e. not hiding behind dsp and other
pseudo-complex "cool" bullshit), +whatevz.

And a general comment about failed career, haha:
After 15+ years of making music- despite no major releases-
I'm REALLY HAPPY AND PLEASED that I can fiiiiinally express
what I want to express with music. And to me, despite no
career with moneyz from it, I can flow pretty fluidly and
efficiently in my own sonic realm. I never "got signed" as
of yet, but all my other electronic music goals, I've
accomplished. I'm high-fiving my high school self so hard
right now. Feels good, man.

Godspeed, all.

I like best

funky acid rmx

this one is also good, in a totally unrealted genre

larn's track is killerslowpoke

both tracks from larn and melack are killer, go for the
comp, if you need wavs I can host mine somewhere

Well, depends if that is the sound he wants to have right? I
could surely remaster it in to some smoothness if i had the
pre-master, but if thats the sound he wants...

What do you use for mastering? khrimsons sound is
uncomfortable in the same way a pure sine wave is. Do you
know the tricks to take away limiting and and compression?

offline yann_g from now on 2014-05-08 21:26 [#02470994]

speaking of sines, how do you get rid of that annoying

Slight modulation. A S&H LFO on the amplitude or pitch works
the best. You only need a bit but it really does feel
better.

I think soundcloud put a layer of normalization/compression
over uploaded tracks, anyways here is the wav if you want to
play with it:

i use equalization together with compression to make the
peaks less limiting - multiband can also work, but i try not
to use that too much. i use kramer tape plugin for some peak
compression because it saturates more than limits.

sweet - yeah the wav doesnt seem as limited as the
soundcloud. wonder if it's because of the bit-reduction in
the streaming quality of soundcloud

It sounds like you need to get into mid/side processing on
different bands before you start eq'ing and the rest of it.

i have the Bob Katz book... if there's something i can't get
to sound right i turn to that. I usually make it sound right
(to my ears and system anyways). My test rundown is like
this; I have a set of Tannoy Reveal Passive with a Cambridge
Audio amp, a set of Yamaha HS50M and what i use the most -
the Beyerdynamic DT990PRO. Then afterwards I usually check
on my livingroom setup which is a NAD/MiniPod-conbination,
and in-ear Beyerdynamics for my mp3-player. Works for me and
my clients.

...but i haven't been much into the math of M/S mastering i
must say. It's still a mysterious thing for my. I have to
make the SOS test-setup one day to really hear the effect.

I'm not criticizing, I just wondered. Whatever works, works.
I think you might get a bit from mid - side processing
though. I don't know how to write it without sounding
condescending but look up some stuff about it.

btw Jiv what do you mean S&H LFO? some random modulation or
a more specific use of the S&H?

Yes, a really fast Sample and hold LFO on things make a big
difference to your ears. If you can use that on the pitch
and volume slightly with whatever you are using it's a
massive improvement. It just adds a random thing to
everything that makes it more real. I can't explain it
properly as it's really boring but give it a try.
