just got this charming notice on soundcloud that one of my tracks has been pulled for illegal samples. this rather pisses me off, as the song did not have any samples whatsoever (with the exception of the drum waveforms baked into a yamaha dx200).
i have to fill out this form with my real address and check all sorts of scary boxes saying they can "serve" me if i'm lying just so some scumbag company can't claim my shit as theirs.
worst part is that the track they're accusing me of sampling is some horrid dubstep crap that's pretty much the antithesis of what i do.
anyone else had to deal with this?

I had a think on this and here is my hypothesis:
There is technology out there by the echo nest which can analyze music. I would bet that soundcloud tries to preempt pirating by analyzing all uploaded songs. My gut tells me your song was found to be too closely related or maybe even matched (whatever abstract form of a song comes out the other side of the algo) some shitty dubstep song.
Just an idea that is LOL if true....

good thinks. maybe one day you'll understand more than picking peanuts out of poo
irony is, i've sampled TV and movies all over the place, and none of them have ever been flagged. the flagged track is ariel off the ariel EP. it's been on soundcloud for two years without a problem....

Yeah, I wasn't talking about film and TV samples that nobody cares about. I'm talking more about pirating music that's popular right now.

My understanding is that Soundcloud's content match system looks and the first 30 seconds or so and tries to match it up to the signatures of copyrighted music. If it matches, the song gets taken down. A human doesn't listen to the song until you contest their claim.
It looks like your song fired off a false-positive. I wouldn't get too upset about it. Soundcloud has to protect themselves, since they could be shut down if they were hosting a bunch of copyrighted content. This has happened to me before (YouTube has a similar system). I'd fill out the form and I'm sure when they can get around to it they'll say sorry and put the song back up.
Have you tried to use something like Shazam to see if the song erroneously matches something else?

Aye, sat here with the window open and didn't see your response. You're absolutely right. I do have it on good authority that they only scan the first 30 seconds of a track.

don't give a shit that soundcloud has to protect itself; i'm paying the fuckers 79euro a year. if they're going to put the burden of filing copyright claims on me i'll just host mp3s on my website, for no additional cost. i like the social aspect, the comments 'n' embedded players etc. but this crap along with the new interface has me leaning towards not renewing my subscription next time 'round.
put simply: i don't care if they have a computer match it up, but they should have a human listen to it before pulling my track.

I agree; human ear (not even a muso) manually comparing the computer's (potential) false positive with the track on their site should be a service you can expect if you're using the paid for service.

i did that a couple times, back when -- left a return comment calling their track poo -- then blocked the dudes right after. one of them got real mad and went over to my youtube channel to start spewing hate, since he couldn't reply on soundcloud. i have to say it was kind of satisfying, but once i'd had a laugh i decided to just stop replying to 'em, 'cos it's like adam sandler's "piece of shit car": only funny the first time 'round

Yes, they treat DJ mixes just like single tracks, but I believe they're only scanning the first 30 seconds, so there are ways around it. I've had some taken down and some that have stayed, but technically shouldn't have.
I think mixcloud is the most popular alternative for hosting mixes but it doesn't have the bells and whistles that soundcloud has.

Pretty shyte for these kind of cases, but algorithmic methods are the only way of processing the amount of data SoundCloud deal with. They are however a bunch of clueless cunts as a company, as advertised by their horrific site design and buttslave subservience to FaceWipe, and I'd expect no less than cold disregard as a standard of customer service from them, if you do/have complained.
On the plus side, I got a good laugh out of DJ Radius' comment on the track you ripped off: "Love that part... One of my fav"

shazam is amazing, to me. IDs stuff from a phone held up to distorted pub speakers with people yelling over a mobile voice connection... genuinely impressive.
consequently, i don't think soundcloud's detection has anything to do with shazam or echo nest, both of whom seem miles more accurate. i suspect soundcloud has developed their own crappy, in-house software, and the more copyrighted songs they add to it, the more false positives it's gonna throw off.

i actually spent a semester working on this in uni... or, well, something similar: trying to ID the genre of an audio recording by computer. the math got beyond me very quickly, and about all i got out of it was an easy A and an appreciation for how goddamn hard this shit is. to reliably ID any piece of music without human ears is, to say the least, non-trivial.
