I was wondering how others here feel about this subject.
I increasingly find myself tending to stay away from reading more about artists on any topic other than how they make music. A lot of artists come across as monumentally stupid in interviews and suddenly anything profound/sublime you felt in the music seems not as special, because there's no way it could be anything more than a happy accident if that clown made it.
For example: I used to really like Ulrich Schnauss' music, but since he revealed himself to be a spectacular hypocrite*, I don't like it as much.
Most of the reason I don't listen to an awful lot of music with lyrics** is the same thing. One track where someone espouses a ridiculous political ideology or moral can really turn you off them.
*repeatedly claiming to be a communist/marxist, then throwing his toys out of the pram to an extent Metallica would be proud of, over filesharing on Soulseek. Despite the fact that I only found his stuff (and subsequently bought copies of his records) through filesharing.
**Most things with lyrics I like are either abstract, neutral or very simple. Rap is probably the exception, but then it's the wordplay itself I enjoy so much.

it happens to me too, that i start to dislike an artist's personality and then enjoy their music less.
HOWEVER, i think it might [i don't know] be a failure on my part.
human beings are complex; if a person is a complete idiot with regards to topics/aspects A, B, C and D, this person can still be okay or even a genius when it comes to topics/aspects E, F, G [and so on].
however, if one cannot appreciate an artist's works anymore because of a couple of stupid things they said, one seems to say: "Well, if a person is wrong about A, then he is just the sort of person that is wrong PER SE, and everything good he seems to have done is POISONED by that."

I think you are on to regarding needing to be able to separate the music (or good things) from the bad things in a person.

Yes, the mental image you have of RDJ's is part of the charm. He has seemed a nice chap, albeit nothing like the 'character' I associate with the music, the couple of times I (very briefly) met him.
I suppose (in the context of my thread) I now try and avoid finding more about artists as it is very rare that understanding more about the artist improves their work and it so frequently spoils it. I mean, I don't care if you're an aid worker as your day job and a really nice guy, it doesn't make your mediocre music good, does it?
When I meet celebrities away from their 'work', I usually don't acknowledge that I know who they are. I imagine that it'd be nicer for them to have a 'normal' human interaction.

If Hitler made music that was super IDM with lush melodies and wicked beats would you like it? What if it also had amazing sounding lyrics about antisemitism and such?
Tracks 2/3/4 on Otto Von Schirach's 8000 BC are like a complete description of every minute molecular interaction of the universe 5 seconds after the big bang, taking thousands of years for a botnet of supercomputers to construct, yet he comes off as a tard, such as:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_SFb4gNWHc
Some theories: 1) He's a tard that found some spectacular software coded by someone else
2) He's a genius appearing tarded to troll 3) Those 3 8000 BC tracks were programmed by the illuminati with their secret 40 years advanced technology. Then they found some random tard on the street to serve as a false PR representative, so even people attracted to the advanced aural information will be memetically dumbed down via immitation, to keep the population in an arrested development childlike dumbed down exploitable controllable domesticated state.

Oh dear. You do realise that's bullshit? No need to romance things by 'agreeing' with whoever made a nice track.

It is that 'meeting your heroes' thing. I tend to steer away from reading interviews as I like to paint my own picture of the person behind the music and selfishly judge the music on how it relates to me.
It is similar to the whole Sports Personality thing which is very odd. If you are an actor or a TV personality I get how you need to be good infront of a camera, but if you kick a ball around for 90 minutes a couple of times a week it shouldn't matter how your personality is percieved.

As far as I can see there's someone missing in this equation: The Journalist: The real Artist. The star of the moment. He or she who brings forth the context. And then the editor... if those roles are not all rolled up in the same person....
With social media you can, as an artist, take more and more control with how you look to the rest of the world. I love Grimes' Visions album, but man is she a handfull on twitter!

A perfect example, I used to like w M w's music back when he was an amateur competitive poop dick stuffer, training to shove massive olympic swimming pool amounts of poop and vomit into his urethra with a special adidas sports funnel. Then he turned his back on amateur competitive poop dick stuffing and it was over he was dead to me and his music was ashes in my ears

If I'm dead to you, you should be indifferent to me raping you. My old music was simply playing 3 octaves of the same looped wav beat simultaneously. My new music is cheeseplug tracker bad sounding tones. I'm more of a text vomiter than an artist, but both are pointless. At least I'll be dead much longer than I did or will do either of those 2 things. I don't know who I am by the way.

Partly because your ego/id/whatever bullshit is normally largely determined by reflections off of others in a social context, but I do not socialize so get no reflections. I'm often surprised when I look in the mirror. I guess I'm the only one who looks at myself.

You're right, of course. It shouldn't matter and the 'art' should be taken as a thing in itself. It's just that I find it hard to do that. That, I suppose, is what I meant this thread to be about.

let´s face it, truth is that all human beings are huge idiots.
lucky for us: lovely music however still is lovely music
as for lyrics, let me remind you of the fact that with all your friends and within all groups of experts or whatever you may call people that make up their minds up on something, there
is a lot of variation and many views also change over time. even if writers decline of their earlier works or don´t behave according to it. a good songtext stays a good songtext even if the author is/was/or developed into something you disagree with. i see how that can be offputting, but there is not one person in the world you or me will ever agree with on all matters. the best base for a discussion is when not everybody agrees with a text or a view anyway ^^

When I saw Richard he was against a structural post talking to an attractive blond girl. He was surprisingly well-dressed and I really liked his boots. His smile seemed genuine and he looked really quite happy.
I didn't feel like bothering the man as he was clearly lining up some pussy for later in the night, and I needed to get along to the store for a bottled water as the molly I'd taken had fully kicked in, was obviously pure and my roll was off the charts.
Beautiful encounter....

Yeah it does help, it's funny. Relations with the music, artist and album art. But ultimately it's balls isn't it?
If you miss out it's your loss and less that of the artist involved. So you punish yourself. I have a mate who thinks he's punishing the team he supports by not watching them when they've lost a few games. It's silly. And i mean watching them on telly (so it's not a boycott that would cost the team) just like so many people download on slsk or torrents etc..
Interesting to hear VS is a huge cunt. Who did he push?

It's strange to hear; I've seen VS in boozers a few times. I've never talked to him as I'm indifferent to his music and didn't particularly have any urge to talk to him. Watching him interacting with 'fans' though, he seemed a pretty affable bloke and a lot more patient with drunk/irritating people than I tend to be.

Actually i need to admit to something here, Ceri. I had the unfortunate fortune of meeting Quinoline Yellow and he's the biggest cunt in music. I think he beats Mick Hucknall and Van Morrison. I still kept mild interest but he and his music are dead to me. ;P

Some artists can alter their music by releasing crap music. For example, Autechre altered Confield with Quaristice.
