The choppiness gets on my nerves. Some nice ideas buried
here and there, I think I like the concept more than the
music itself.

i think i don't like it.

as a matter of fact i think i hate it.

and that's even before i've heard any samples!

i heard one tune by this guy a year or so ago and it was
shit. i really doubt anything's changed.

Samples sound okay. He might be repeating himself with these
chop chop BANG rhythms, but ag wel, it works for me.

i quite like his stuff, its inventive using old videotape
samples, give it a nice warm analoggy sound. is this out on
skam?

i like a couple of the ones from ribbons of gold, but i
find some of the tracks sound too similar, like it could be
one long continues track

in a kinda similar vein has anyone checked out 'Galactic
Melt'
by com truise? out on ghostly international. use nice 80's
analogue sounds with spooky voice overs in a kinda boards
stylee. great record and well worth a listen.

on topic: i wish vhs head didn't use his album cd as a
coaster... it's too glitchy, but sunset everett is great! i
wish he did more 'straight' tunes cause i like those the
most, it gets a bit too glitchy for me.

anyone here into fennesz? i fucking love fennesz at the
moment, listening to 'endless summer' and 'the black sea' is
like having a religious experience injected into your
eyeball. perhaps i didnt sell him very well there, but you
get my drift.

Sunset Everett is one unbelievable catchy tune, from Ribbons
I like the first 4 tracks or so then the rest it get too
choppy and glitchy for me to handle, wished he blended the
samples in a more not so obvious way like in Sunset Everett
and the like.

Curious to hear what his music would sound like without the
whole VHS Head concept behind.

offline Portnoy on 2011-08-13 10:07 [#02419219]

Trademark Ribbons of Gold can be overwhelming as a whole. I
think the first E.P is the nicest - like Kincaid....it has a
more a primitive feel to it and the climax melody is mind
blowing. Actually, I think the Mary Anne Hobbes set is
probably the best collection of VHS Head tunes.

Overall, the sounds are just good and yummy. And it is a
cool concept.

Sundown sounds lovely. Very 80's sound track sounding. I
will be getting the vinyl for this. Not so sure about the
other tracks and the general cutting up, it can get a bit
tiring.
Nice to drop the odd track now and then but listening to a
few in a row is tiresome.

wow. a bunch of aphex twin listeners who think the music is
too glitchy for them.

lololololololololololol

ridiculousness aside, i posted this as a notice for new
music. you know, since xltronic is kinda dead and has been
dead for a long time now. thought i'd actually contribute
some real news here to cut through the torrent of trolols.
if you don't like his music, you have your reasons. but it's
kinda lame to find that the majority of this place is
immediately smacking down the album with negative comments,
even before some of you (Advocate) have even given it a
chance. it's an announcement for a new release, for fucks
sake. no one is forcing you to even pay attention here, and
you're obviously not the target market since you've already
written it off.

RusselDust, while I appreciate your attempt to diffuse the
situation for the sake of politeness, you seem to be unaware
of elusive's antics of late.

not to mention the fact that he's complaining about my
'commenting on every VHS Head thread' when the threads he is
talking about (most pertinently this one, and the current
one on WATMM) were started by me.

also, his grasp of British English is rather poor.

those samples are too short and shitty sound quality,
dunno how someone is supposed to be attracted to buy the

so don't buy it. Amazon isn't the record label. if you want
to wait for better samples, wait. or maybe you'll find
somewhere you can download the whole album for free, and
then you can decide on whether it's worth your money.

or maybe you've written it off as being shit. it's your
call.

no-one is telling you to buy it.

I'm here to defend VHS Head's music. I thought it was too
gimmicky at first and really didn't like the choppiness. It
gave me a headache. But I kept listening to the both albums,
"IN THEIR ENTIRETY." Which is, IMO, the best way to listen
to his albums.

His music really isn't for everyone. I've shared the album
with several friends who share common interests in music and
they either didn't like it or were unimpressed.

Yes, although the VHS sampling is staggering and almost
impossible to realize the amount of work and time that was
devoted to it, it still feels like it's a bit limiting and
at times monotonous.

But I still couldn't stop listening to album. Over and over
and over again. Became an obsession.

So if you don't like it. Don't listen. Give people a chance
to make their own decision. From my experience most of you
will not like it. Also, try listening to the albums in their
entirety. Not the usual internet "one song listen/judgement"
which we are all guilty.

I only joined this forum to comment on this. Anonymous
hating really thrives on the net.

reasonable explanation is vhs being him or a close friend of

i dont know, its like youre getting angry after almost every
comment posted...
people say they dont like the album, you say nobody force to
listen, i critize amazon shit sample quality, you say me not
to buy the album... i know xltronic has been historically
quite a rude and cinical place, but i think you could be
more positive or reasonable or something, i dont know, i
just feel you are somehow angry with xltronic and everyone
and i dont know why i dont like it

if you re-read my replies you'll see that i'm calling out
such comments as

"i think i don't like it.

and that's even before i've heard any samples!

i heard one tune by this guy a year or so ago and it was

by Advocate,
which is completely ridiculous. Really? you haven't even
heard this, and you hate it? that's some pre-cog shit right
there.

I'm more generally annoyed with the attitude of certain
people, both here and on watmm.

i made the thread to let people know about it. Then there's
people make comments about the music that they haven't even
heard yet. it's bullshit.

I listen a lot to "Trademark Ribbons of Gold" but it's about
1 third Liquid Gold to 2 thirds punishing racket; exhausting
to listen to in its entirety. I like best the the Mary Anne
Hobbes mix (this also goes for the entire output of Team
Doyobi). I enjoy Oscilisk getting all grumpy in this thread
and it makes me want to write something like "Oscilck's
pouty tantrum has put me right off buying the new album and
makes me retroactivley hate the old material"
