but the media (CD. 12") teaches you how to respect music, unlike mp3's which you dont give a shit about because you can instantly delete it or dl it again.

Why should you respect music (what does it even mean, really?), and, more importantly, why would you need a hard copy to respect music? Seems a little silly and materialistic.

well,to respect music means that you actually listen to it, instead of downloading shitloads of crap you wont even know about untill you do the disk cleanup again.
media demands special care, you need to move your ass, use the object, instead of just sitting and clicking around.im telling you, people just wont use cds that often because mp3'sd are just easier to use.
now, that applies to cd's. and im not even talking about vinyls, but then again, its just my opinion.its general approach, im not saying you do that, but a lot of people do, seeing what they write on this board.

and FLACS are not the exact copy, neither they are of cd audio quality, they're close but not the same.
but, you need to have really good stereo set to hear that.most of people dont even have proper designated speaker sets at their pc's, thus, even 192kb seems fine.

Music is just music. There's no right way to listen to it. Music is not objectively better if it's more hi-def or if it took you some effort to put it on. It's your way of romanticising it.
The mature artist should know that he can't control how his audience will take his work, and should actually be interested in the different approaches and results. It's all about reception, the artist doesn't matter.

There is no difference between flac and CD except that flacs don't scratch. It's a lossless compression format. Feel free to think otherwise. *shrug*

there is difference between flac and cd audio.believe me, every decent cd player in range above, 10k sterling, will clearly show you the difference. obviously, you would have to use similar quality speaker set and amplifier to hear that.
dariusgrifffin: i agree on lack of artists ability to forsee what te listener will do or hear. however, as a big hi-fi fan i believe that dedicated audio systems are the only ones providing the full audio experience when listening closely to albums.whether you want to listen to something in background, car or on shitty quality ipod, is another piece of cake.
QRDL: do i look like i care ?

If FLAC is lossless, then... how is the CD better? Does it add something? I'm sure if I listened to anything on a £10K+ system I'd convince myself x10,000 times it sounded better otherwise I'd think I'd just spunked away £9,800 on just sleek design and discreet digital display.

No you don't and why should you?
But do a simple thing for me: 1. Rip z CD to FLAC using the help provided by EAC forums and stuff, that is retaining all the info about gaps between songs.
2. Burn a CD from the created files (remember to use the CUE sheet).
3. Make images of both the original and the recorded CD. 4. Compare the image files bit by bit using for example Total Commander
If there is a difference you are clearly doing something wrong.
A quicker version of this test would involve compressing a WAV file to FLAC and back again, but there is a chance you believe that there is a difference between WAV and CD.
It's quite appaling that people don't understand the basics of digital data storage. A guy in a hi-fi store I visited once wanted to organize a special presentation of his hardware using CDs copied on his 4000€-worth professional CD-burner, a burner which makes ALMOST identical copies of the original media. Fuck me, I'll use my 30€ DVD burner from LG which somehow can magically create a perfect copy of a CD containing an archive which wouldn't have decompressed later if it wasn't exactly the same file. Since that time I'm quite convinced that most of audiophiles are common con-men or guys who cannot admit they've wasted a lot of time and resources chasing some illusion.

I have spent $100,000 USD on my stereo setup including $10,000 dollars for cabling and a $3,000 set of acoustically neutral wooden knobs, and I can tell you from personal experience and extensive testing with a $17,000 Gleisner-Fawtze linear phase analysis spectrometer that there is no difference between CD audio and Flac audio.
Also, you could try decompressing a flac into wav and invert the phase to see if it cancels a wav ripped from CD when summed against it in a multitrack editor. That's probably slightly cheaper, so true audiophiles will prefer the first method.
