Tekkon Kinkreet OST (2006) = fabulous

I'm also one of those few people who liked (most of) Greedy
Baby.

you may HAVE TO interview them?? oh, the punishment
inflicted on the unworthy!

Ask them if they have any new full-scale collaborative or
soundtrack projects on the horizon, or is it going to be a
studio album next.

Plaid cheesy? Surely you jest. Ed and Andy have been
"releasing" music since 1988 or so, they've been around the
block quite a few times. If you want to see what Plaid has
been up to, just go to their website and click the link to
their myspace page (official fanpage).

Tekkon is amazing. Their remix of Lavender Oil is awesome.
The new Balil remix is outstanding.

It's a shame people don't talk about them like they do Aphex
and AE (blah, same old junk). Plaid have an insane ear for
music composition, be it melodies or rhythm. Their
drum-programming was top notch back when they emphasized it.
They made quite possibly the greatest Trance song ever in
Parasight (LAWL Plaid and Trance together).

Did everyone download The Black Dog Live torrent Phobia
hosted on here a ways back? They played a few Plaid tracks
as well as some Black Dog stuff.

Sorry I went off on a tangent here, but since I've been
visiting and lurking these forums Plaid never got the credit
they deserve.

Oh and a question to ask them if you get an interview. Ask
them to bust out their old equipment (or some of it) like
the stuff used on the new Balil remix and ask them to put
together a Balil/Atypic/Tura release on the side when their
bored or something. :]

i like those early black dog records a lot. and i wasn't
kidding about them being cheesy in their own way..and i
agree on their ear for composition, it's just that they're
stuck with that particular form throughout their whole
career. it's like rearanging same song over and over again,
lacks creativity and it's very predictable..but that's due
to their interest in pop form i guess so it doesn't bother
me, it's just why im not as interested in them as i am in ae
or rdj. i bought all their records up until couple of
releases ago so there, i guess i like them : )

as for the cheesy comment, they do have a particular sound
really cheerful bright sound, which is pretty unique to
plaid, and i have to say.. its pretty cheesy. good though!

Where are you getting this "cheesyness" from? I mean, what
are you talking about? If were talking new music instead of
the late 90s/early 2000s I still don't see it.

Have you listened to the Tekkon OST? Is a song like
"Where?" cheesy? White's Dream? Or maybe the breaks driven
Rat's Step. I won't disagree that they have been rooted in
a style since Spokes (Tekkon is not the same as Spokes and
Greedy Baby).

I guess the thing that really irritated me here is the fact
an AE thread can have over 200+ replies or an AFX song can
get 20+, but when you have someone like Plaid who has
released music be it through Plaid, Black Dog, w/e longer
than AFX or AE have a struggle to find anything about them
on a consistent (I use that loosely) basis. And that's with
Ed and Andy having a much bigger catalogue then either.
They do more production work (even today!) and there's less
about them.

Give credit where credit is due. Is there a better remixer
out there? If so I haven't heard one, Reload/Global
Communication come close, but not close enough. With all
they have done production wise (which is a lot more than any
of the "holy trinity of IDM") it's just laughable that
people will call them cheesy or say they don't like them at
all.

It's like dude.....these guys are orginators of an era and
are still truckin along nicely today and it comes down to
whimsical comments?

'where' sounds extremly cheesy to me i must say so does
'white's dream'..it's really pointless to go on..their
melodies and song creating is just cheesy but that doesn't
mean it's bad. they have their own aesthetics which is a
big
bonus, it's just so happens that their style suits my taste
less than ae or aphex, that's all there is to it. it's nice
to hear an occassional song here and there but to listen to
the album in whole may be a bi tough as my attention
drops..i do appreaciate what they do and have done in the
past, but i don't find their music all that exciting what
can i say : )

offline revpersona from Plainfield (United States) on 2007-12-11 12:11 [#02153088]

I don't want to talk specifics on a song, even though I
disagree, but the vibe I get from most on this board is that
since their music structure is based around melodies rather
than sound experimentation a la AE or just mental crazyness
of some Squarepusher and AFX it's cheesy.

And I just have to ask then, is Boards of Canada cheesy with
their production being based around nostalgia? They
emphasize melodies a lot too.

If that's the case slap them in the same boat as BT doing
music for Britney Spears or the trash that Tiesto plays.
Adiago of Cheese anyone?

But yeah, I'm out of touch with music tastes on this forum
(a B12 thread over 100 replies, maybe there's hope), so with
that I take my leave.

although i really love their older work (and listen to it on
a day to day basis), their newer work just dulls me. i
regret having bought spokes. greedy baby has one (really!)
good track - super positions - while the rest sounds worse
than spokes. and tekkon, o god no. it was good for the
movie, but on its own - no friggin way. that new track, i
listened to it once on bleep but it's just too much like the
rest.
i've said it before on this forum and i'll repeat myself
here: listening to new plaid is like reading an alternate
version of a book you already know through and through. it
may be a clever written book with excellent style, but it's
just the same old story.

i would say i consider them top-most geniuses, and if by
cheese what is meant is superficiality then i don't see that
all... the glitchy aesthetic of the idm scene is in their
music less prominent, which means they are easy to dismiss,
but from a point of view of harmonic progression, they are
in a class of their own.

Very well said revpersona!

I just don't get why people feel the urge to talk about
something they do not like or tear an artist down because
it's not up their alley. Don't play the music when you do
not like it.

I haven't seen much questions either.. and that's what this
topic is about.

When I was about to interview them I'd ask if they have a
recoding from their live performance in Amsterdam at the
Warpnight as it was the best live gig I witnessed ever.

A few questions for Tolstoyed.
- You guys did a few performances during the Warp London
Synfionetta tour. Will any of this music be released
somewhere in the future?

- Are there plans for a new film score?

- How did you guys hit upon the idea to make a track about
the Mexican hero, Superbarrio?

- What is there to see on the tiny negative which is packed
with Greedy Baby?

-When did you guys quit your dayjob to become fulltime
musicians? (don't know if they had dayjobs)

- Any plans being made for a new album?

- Any specific reason why you choose Plaid as a bandname?

- How many of the fake tuss tracks are you responsible for?

*warning* probably an incredibly cliched question by this
point.
- Being pretty old school warp peeps, how do you feel about
their change of direction with all the attention to indie
bands AND SUCH
