funk-

might i ask what gives u faith? has your god ever spoken
back to you when pray to him/her? Has it ever made certain
things happen for you, that couldnt just be coincidence? For
expample, I ask god to open the window. he doesnt do it. Why
should i have faith now that god is making me get off my
lazy ass and open the window myself? how could i have faith
when this god hasnt given me any thing to work with? imho,
the church is fucked. it has been so since the beggining of
its time. im not trying be offensive here, but can u
christians really agree that, "witch and homosexual
burnings" where a good thing? And the church also used to
have a little, "sin forgiven" ticket that you would BUY. Buy
forgiveness. If only they still did that in charlie masons
time.

well ive gone this far, so now i have to rant...... here we
goes..

Where did religon come from? The most obvious reasons where
to explain why the world existed. all of humanity was
eventualy asserted with one religion or the other, and thats
when the good ol' holy wars started. Religion was no longer
an explamation. It was a fucking government. god damn,
people... it was a government that relied so heavily on
people believing that it was true, so when someone came out
and opposed the idea, they would kill them, thus making a
motry to all the other NON-BELEIVERS!! KILL THEM ALLL!
MAUHAH... k..
i am hungry. Now think about what the church could
accomplish on a personal level. burning homosexuals... "ahh,
we just say its gods will, and presto! we get it our way!"
why would this god create us all in his image, but hate us?
the bible states that, "man shalt not sleepeth with man (nor
thy neighbors wife)". If theres a god and hes so damn
powerfull that he can create the endless universe, and all
of life, and what not, then WHY WOULD HE LET US DO THINGS
AGAINST HIS WILL? WHY NOT JUST KILL US? SHIYAT. I AM
AETHEIST! I OPPOSE THE CHURCH! I GIVE YOU, GOD, TEHH MIDDLE
FINGER! HA! NOW WHY AM I STILL HERE? IF U CAN CREATE THE GOD
DAMNED (erm... god made

and in answer to The Funkmasters question..

I don't believe in a god for the simple reason that I do not
believe in things I cannot experience in a more or less
direct way.

I have never seen/heard/felt any god.

also, to me it sounds more logical that life, in essence, is
senseless - explains a lot more of whats happening in the
world than having the idea of a god.

yeah...and to add what made me be a christian -> to believe
in something big makes you realize what faith can do, but
when you realize that faith, instead of being directed at
God, might as well could have been be directed at Buddha or
a stone, and have same effect.

"Religious distress is at the same time the expression of
real distress and the protest against real distress.
Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of
a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless
situation. It is the opium of the people.

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the
people is required for their real happiness. The demand to
give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to
give up a condition which needs illusions."

I kind of believe in some higher force, but not the kind of
God written about in the bible. That stuff is just made up,
face it!

As for the Church, no way, I used to go to church when I was
a kid, (I was made to go!) and it turns out one of the
Vicars or whatever was a child molester. Nice eh? So that
kind of cements my dismissal of the church system.

Some Buddhists believe Jesus existed as do some aetheists-
they just don't think he was the son of God.

Do people need to believe in God to exist or does God need
to have people believe in him to exist?

There is some research made that all people have a god-zone
somewhere in their brain that is activated under extreme
stress or injury. Hence the reason that people who have lost
loves ones or have been in terrible accidents suddenly turn
to religion.

So, in summation all religious people are brain damaged.

If i was going to invent a God and make people believe in
him... this (the christian way) would be almost exactly how
i would do it.

-you can't see or hear or smell god
-you just have to have faith that he exists
-you have to believe in him in order to get to heaven
-whenever something good happens to you it's the work of
God
-whenever something bad happens to you it's not God's fault
but your own, or the devils.

Really not trying to offend anyone, and especially not the
funkmaster. I find this an interesting thread.

I was raised in a christian way. Going to church every
sunday, a prayer before dinner, bible-reading after dinner.
And for the first half of my life i believed in God.

But in the last couple of years i have just thought alot
about this subject, and i came to the conclusion that it
just doesn't make sense. Religion that is.

From my perspective it's so easy to see why people
have written the bible. Here they were on this earth, with
so many questions and no anwsers... i think whoever wrote
the bible was actually a genius. And if it has given so many
people faith and something to believe in... that's a
beautiful thing. (also there are many good things in the
bible... the world would be a much better place if everyone
lived by the 10 commandments).

But for me... i look at religion as just that. Something
invented by man, to soothe millions of people. Easy anwsers
for difficult questions. I suppose life was easier when i
still believed in God... but i just can't anymore. It feels
a bit like trying to believe in santaclaus again. It was
beautiful while it lasted... but now i "know" it's not true
and i can't go back.

Ironically it was actually a little booklet given to me by a
jehova's witness that got me thinking in the first place...
it was like 300 pages of writing trying to proove how the
bible must be true. But with every word i read i started to
believe stronger that it isn't...

yes i understood that :-)

It often seems on this board that the people who don't
believe in God, like to make fun of the people that do (even
in this thread).

But you never see the believers making fun of the
atheists...

(hehe, like in that one seinfeld episode where David Putty
turns out to be a christian... but then the priest tells him
he will go to hell anyway for "just having fun" with elaine
;-)

Priest: "hahaha hehehe" (making little horns with his
fingers against his head).
Elaine: "hahaha, don't worry, it'll only feel like an
eternity!")

ahem... sorry ;-)

"(also there are many good things in the bible... the

10 commandments)"

oh dear. I don't agree on that one.

thats one of the things that I don't like about christianity
- all the little rules.

I mean, the first four commandments are all about honoring
god etc.
should we live by those? would the world be a better place?
hasn't helped much up till now.

that said, I do agree with a few of them, ofcourse. you
know, the not to kill, honor your parents, do not steal
ones.

the "do not commit adultery"-one is a bit harder. I wouldn't
do it and I would hate for someone else to do that to me,
but that one kind of grates with human nature. maybe its not
very realistic.
I think it would make a lot of people very frustrated to
follow that one. I don't know.

"honor your neighbours goods" - you should be happy with
what you have. thats a nice idea, but for most people
unfeasible.

again, if everybody would follow that one, it would make a
lot of people very frustrated.

the joke is ..... that we are all our own gods.

most religions depict deities as informing us poor plebs of
what is right and wrong... oas controlling our future,
things o be worshipped

But right and wrong is relative to the society you were born
into so, if you open your eyes, have a strong heart and
develop a belief in your own power you will see that YOU are
god.. you control your future. Fuck relgion.... Art is the
answer.. worship yourself but don´t confuse that wuth
vanity. Its all a laugh really

one thing i find really weird about this topic...

you asking why some people don't believe in god, but there
is no proof anywhere that a god existed?! for the creation
of the world (if there was one! it's not even sure...) and
all that things, god is nothing but one hypothese among a
probable infinity of others... (and imho not an obvious one
at all, it's even quite whimsical if you ask me).

don't get me wrong, i'm no convict atheist.
i just don't believe (in the sense, strong believe,
conviction) in god nor in the non-existence of god.
maybe the world would have been given birth by, for example,
it would have come from another parallel universe (why not?)
by the explosion of a huge interuniversal flower, or a mad
alien scientist who'd have serendipitously created the
universe in which we live and then keeps it in a bottle, or
maybe a giant perverse pokémon with a giant interuniversal
penis ejaculating galaxies and stuff, or just unknown forces
we cannot imagine, or maybe the universe just has always
existed, life just appeared serendipitously, because of
natural (chemical, physical...) phenomenons!

the fact that there are millions of people believing in god
doesn't prove anything... millions of people can be right as
well as they can be wrong (and when it comes to such a
subject, imo... we're all probably wrong about this ^^)

please don't take any offense or anything but you were
talking about it like believing in god was the "normal" way
of thinking, and people believing in anything else (or in
nothing?) were deviants... it's not that obvious
IMHO. :)

I meant to say, if you don't believe in God that's a good
way to explain why people do believe in it. People grow up
and they still want someone to protect them like when they
were a child.

I like to think of God as a mother/older brother.

I believe that children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me
I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I will live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

Find your strength in love
