Those of you in the UK and with access to FilmFour might be
interested to hear they're having a Lynch marathon next
Friday consisting of:

The Elephant Man
Dune
Blue Velvet
Wild At Heart
The Straight Story

imo, the guy is the greatest filmmaker in the history of,
err, filmmaking.

Blue Velvet is one of my favorite movies. :)

Spookyluke and I want to see Eraserhead... anyone know where
the hell this movie can be fund?

Oh, and is Mullholland Dr any good? Whenever I read the back
of the movie box, I want to see it because it says, "with
colors that pop like a whores lipgloss!" or something. :)
I love that. ;)

Has anyone seen Iron Monkey?

offline epohs from )C: on 2003-01-04 10:01 [#00501386]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

yes, I saw Iron Monkey. I thought it was very
entertaining. don't expect a whole lot of deep thought from
it or anything, but, it's top notch kung fu.

As far as Lynch goes I think he's a total genuis when it
comes to the technical aspects of film. lighting, color
composition, framing of shots, ect... however, I think in
some instances he can take his storytelling to unnecessary
degrees of abstractness. I mean, sometimes things get
wierd just for the shock value of the wierdness. I am fully
aware that he makes deliberate choices about EVERY aspect of
his films, I just think as a storyteller he tends to make
things a little more complicated than they need to be
sometimes. even if he is trying to show the psychological
turmoil in his characters through cinematic strangeness.

that being said twin peaks changed my life and just about
every film he's done has been great.

that's my 2 cents.

I find that he can be brilliant (Blue Velvet, mulholland

(dune, wild at heart, lost highway)but even the shite ones are
more interesting than half the crap out these days.

I despise Eddie Izzard. Dressing up like a women he needs to
get a life. On top of that he just isn't at all funny, not
in the slightest.

WongFeiHung,

I watched Iron Monkey the other day I was blown away. I luv
the sense of humour - for me it was a different experience
to Crouching Tiger and it was probably the first Hong Kong
Kung Fu film I've enjoyed in a while. It would have been
nice to hear it in Mandarin as oppose to Cantonese though.

thanks for the link there pOgO,all the paintings are pretty
funny.......i remember seeing the orsen welles painting on
his show.
I have to say though that derren brown scares me a bit,he
had me convinced when i watched his programme.

Promo, well if enjoyed that style of kung-fu movie check out
twin warriors or fist of legend, the same guy who did the
fight scenes for iron monkey & crouching tiger (yuen woo
ping)did these as well (and they`ve got jet li in them).i
have iron monkey on dvd,it doesnt matter what language its
in because its dubbed for each region (cantonese, manderin
etc.)......the actors in the movie speak different languages
so they have to dub it anyway.............but i know what
you mean,it would be good to get a good kung-fu movie with
real/good sound.

lynch's vision of dune really dissapointed me. he also
missed out some parts of the story, but that kinda goes with
the teritory of films from books. but the thing which really
annoyed me is all the crap i have to put up with from people
who saw the film then said it was crap and think the book is
also crap, purely because things like the guild, CHOAM, etc
were never mentioned properly in the intro to set the
scene.
hes still a wicked director tho, dont suppose i could do any
better with dune unless i had bout £1 Bn to spend on it!

well, Lynch has said in interviews he wanted to do the other
books as well, but then the movie bombed, so no sequels.

his first cut of Dune was something like 4 hours. but just
look at how dense the books are - so much
information! hard to translate to film.

I really, really hated the voice-overs in Dune. I
know, the book has lots of monologue interieur, and I
disliked it there too, but it just takes away all subtext.
really annoying.

and the music - come on! Toto!?

anyway..

love all Lynch's other work - great use of sounds and music
(except Toto..) in his film. he really has a fine ear as
well as a fine eye.

I was thinking of joining the David Lynch site, but the $10
per month is still quite a lot for me.. maybe later on..

Tried watching Twin Peaks:Fire Walk with Me the other night
but had to turn it off. I was knackered and wasn't in the
mood. I find that with some of his films. You need to be in
the right frame of mind to tap into the abstraction.

as far as the box description of mulholland, its a load of
crap... dont go by that. i don't even get the whores
lipgloss thing, there isn't any prostitution in this movie
(might have fit lost highway better)... it IS however one of
my top 3 fav lynch films, if not in the top 2... has anyone
read the scripts for his unproduced films, namely "ronnie
rocket" or "one saliva bubble"... try looking on the net for
these, they are VERY good. i really wish he would have made
these films. i also have to say i think that angelo
badalamenti's compositions are part of what makes a great
lynch film: before i even SEE anything, i know it is lynch,
because i hear angelo creeping up... they need to do another
twin peaks film toot sweet.

I saw Lost Highway the other week. Wasn't very impressed-
reminds me of the film "Nowhere". There was no clever ending
that tied it all in and made it make sense, unlike some
people I talked to I don't think this was to make it
"abstract" or "open to interpretation". I get the impression
that they started writing it and couldn't think of an ending
so left it vauge. Reminds me of the "And then I woke up."
Cop out endings I used to write as a child.

In my opinion Lynch will never better Blue Velvet, although
the first series of Twin Peaks was amazingly good.

Ceri: I agree with you to a certain extent, with Lost
Highway and Mullholland Drive he just uses a fairly normal
explanation to get weird, you can analyse the films to hell
and back but there's no point, they have depth in small
details but storywise they're no great shakes.
